Up until she says the words "you could work for me" it's ambiguous because she's obviously having second thoughts but once she says those words I don't know how anyone could interpret what happens next as anything but full on brain smashing. Those words definitely triggered her. She's not the cleaning lady anymore. She's the captain. She's not going to work for her. It's a sad ending for Abigail though because there is no future scenario that doesn't end badly for her.

same, she was hesitant at first, but that offer sealed yaya's fate. with abigail's current status she's not just going to step down to something of low position.

The ending scene feels so on point... At the moment Yaya realizes she found back her social status, when she is in her element again (the luxury resort hotel), she does not fear death anymore, she does not even look to Abigail when proposing her to work for her. At the moment money means something again, she feels untouchable once again.

Whether you believe she let her live or killed her says more about your relationship to the status quo. How people will ascend to power the moment they are given the chance and how they are not willing to let go of it. I did not expect this movie to be what it was. I think the real question we should be asking isn't if abigail killed yaya or not, but rather, why was the ending ambiguous? I think the film doesn't show us the outcome because it doesn't matter, what matters was that abigail was willing to kill yaya in order to maintain her privileged social status, in a similar fashion in which they killed the donkey earlier, social status is something so integral to us that maintaining it is comparable to an act of survival, in much the same way we have to kill to eat, Abigail had to kill to avoid losing her value in society. Yaya also is using her social status to survive (literally). very interesting and entertaining film

@knurdyob
@knurdyob Жыл бұрын
@@angelinamachine3931 I thought Carl was running through the woods simply from the euphoria of finally getting back to civilization. Though it can be argued his expression isn't one of euphoria but of blind rage because his girlfriend got killed, to me, I think it was the celebratory tone of the music that made me lean towards the first interpretation. either way, the exact outcome of that situation is irrelevant towards the point of the ending
@way9883
@way9883 Жыл бұрын
@@knurdyob interesting, actually. but how does your first interpretation works though? because carl was being left alone inside the boat when yaya and abigail went hiking. didn't you think carl maybe came to his sense that yaya is probably in danger and he wants to save her and mend their dysfunctional relationship? i mean after knowing abigail that long (probably the only one in the island knowing her intimately) carl knew yaya will meet her demise if he didn't get to her soon. that's my interpretation. what do you think?
@knurdyob
@knurdyob Жыл бұрын
@@way9883 your interpretation is also plausible especially when taking into account the last conversation Carl had with Yaya. what I interpreted from that last shot (if we go by the theory that he was euphoric to get back to civilization) is that one of two things could've happened: either Yaya lived and her and Abigail were able to inform the rest of the group about the resort, or Yaya was killed, but the rest of the group still got word about the resort anyway because that other lady somehow managed to communicate their situation to the man selling stuff on the beach, who in turn found and informed the rest of the group. I think the film purposefully gave us two ways for the group to potentially find out about the resort so that Yaya's fate is always left ambiguous. But again your theory is plausible as well, I guess I just leaned towards thinking he was running from the eagerness to get back to his normal life because of the huge reveal that there was a resort nearby, followed by celebratory music as he runs towards it

So went back and watched the whole ending again, from the time yaya knocked on the life boat, as I found it very intriguing. The ending rings differently once you realize that yaya 100% knew that Abbie was about to attempt to kill her, on her second attempt to get her to go toward the elevator, on Abbie’s second refusal, yaya’s facial expressions show that she now is fully reading the situation: what the beach experience has meant for abilgail, and what going back into a resort means for her. The elevator symbolizes the end of this parallel life she’s created where she’s on top as “captain”, and a return to normalcy, where she’s seen as mere disposable help, the rich/spoiled guests who were just forced to submit to her are back to being seen as priority and firmly “above” her, and the real captain is a negligent drunk. What the elevator symbolizes for yaya, is a call back to after the dinner scene, when Carl was irate at her audacity and manipulation, and she was cornered in the elevator, as he kept opening the door at the last second to continue yelling and pointing aggressively with his hands. Basically symbolizing that if he wanted to get violent and hurt or kill her there, she would be screwed. And plants in her head that if she tries to run for the elevator to escape Abbie, she will likely fail. Yaya is now sitting in the rocks, internally seeking a way to empathize with and hopefully manipulate abbie into not killing her. She asks about her kids - abbie has none. When Abbie says she needs to use the bathroom before she goes, yaya is right there mentally, anticipating what’s next. She gazes off into the distance, pretending she is not processing the situation, the same way she pretends earlier in the film to not process it being time to pay for the bill. She hears abbigail’s footsteps in the rocks, they are loud and audible. She continues to stare off. Just as she hears the footsteps getting closer and speeding up for the attack, she begins to bargain. “I can help you Abigail.” She is now attempting to do the same thing that Carl accused her of at dinner. Pretending she did not see the waiter delivering the bill (now Abigail with the rock), instead, using her manipulative skill to say something at the right moment that would force the other person to behave in her favor. Whether her manipulation here is once again successful, I think is meant to be open ended, as while it seems to be having an effect initially, the final comment she makes about “you can be my assistant” is seen as both a “generous” offer and also a giant slap in the face to what Abigail wants to escape from and who she has become while on the island. It could even be seen as a passive aggressive dig, the same way she told Carl “well I do make more than you” when he was addressing his frustrations with the money situation. Carl running I believe is simply his slow-to-react processing of why Abbie was insistent to follow yaya, and to do so alone. And perhaps, why yaya even came to the boat and announce her intention to walk in the first place (to manipulate Abbie into coming with her). He was visibly pensive about it at the onset, and it finally dawned on him that one of them might be in danger. I’m not sure the goods peddler was meant to indicate Carl’s knowledge that the island was populated, as it could also make for an interesting situation, where the one person who is aware, is the one person who cannot move well or communicate. In that sense it could lend to the idea that Abbie kills yaya and goes back to continue her island fantasy, keeping everyone away from that part of the island deeming it “dangerous”, and the woman who had the stroke simply has to sit there and bask in the irony of it all, judging Abigail. At least I think I like that version better, haha. I have a few additional thoughts. I don’t think yaya was actually jealous of Carl hooking up with Abbie as she acted, because she had told him early on during her “ask me anything” honesty hour that this relationship was nothing more than a tactical decision. I think she was more so jealous that it was his looks and sexuality that was coming in handy to get what he needs and elevate him up the hierarchy, and not hers, as she was accustomed. This lends to the idea that it was her manipulating Abbie to come hiking with her, and that she is more in tune throughout the film than she lets on, like when she informed Carl he was being too aggressive with his hands while explaining himself to Abbie, and that the simple act of defending himself was bringing Abbie pain. In a way, she was the one there in that moment who instructed him to submit himself to Abigail. I have a theory that is far-fetched, but hear me out. It becomes clear that the black guy was most likely one of the pirates, as they accused him of being initially, when he somewhat acknowledges it with the Russian. He is the one who initially suggested that he and Carl sneak some pretzels from the bag that Abbie left. Abbie also was strangely the one to randomly orchestrate leaving them on the beach with the bag, while the women slept in the lifeboat. Abbie was quick to then use this to her advantage, by starving Carl as punishment, and then saying “since you didn’t eat, you come with me”, and basically extorting him sexually, basically saying if you want to eat, you’ll have to please me. The whole thing with Abbie showing up later than everyone else in the beached boat, loaded with water and snacks (things she could use as leverage). It just seemed very peculiar… all as a result of this random pirate attack… using grenades manufactured by a guest on the yacht… maybe the guy Carl got fired was her lover, and this was all her revenge, lmao. Also I think the watch the peddler has on was stolen off of one of the rich guys

Carl and Abigail getting together fits with all the things he tries to explain to yaya as thé equality of genders and him thinking its not about money or beauty or anything and wants a deeper connection. Hierarchy, classism, capitalism, gender roles and human nature depictions and thé ephemeral or absurdity of it all is so well depicted in this film. I really enjoyed seeing where it took us. It was original and different. I feel like the vendor from the resort who wonders at the end tries to sell the german lady who can’t speak English or well due to past stroke is seen by the others and carl realizes the outcome of yaya and Abigail already knowing about it too from their hike hence his frantic running to find them fearing what they could fatally do to one another to keep him.

What's interesting is the part of "captain of the island" was initially written for a male boat mechanic. It was one of Ruben's students who suggested it would be more interesting if the role was for a woman. I wish I could see the film before the commercial cut. Think, for her, Carl was disposable, he was there with her in part one and in part two, cause It was "good for business" , why would be diferent in part three, actually, none of then changed their essence, except for Abigail. So it is plausible that she manipulates Abigail, cause she didnt have changed at all, but this time, she manipulated her last victim, she gambles her life purely for the satisfaction of been manipulative, but she probably dies like the donkey and Carl was running because he knew that facade is about to ending when the survivors met that salesman, he was trying to prevent at least Abigail to tell they were together, but he knew since Abigail left the boat to go for a walk with Yaya that Abigail was a threat to Yaya.

The thing is, the film makes it a point that everyone can have their own interpretation. Personally, it's actually rare that I see people discuss Yaya. It has been established from the start that she is manipulative. Who knows, she could have had a hand in manipulating Carl into sleeping with Abigail in order for them to get more food. More importantly, Yaya already knew that Abigail did not want to enter the elevator. And she realized that Abigail wanted to kill her. I believe she also weighed her chances of getting to the elevator and thought of a plan to save herself. Her putting up that offer could be a fail-safe plan but a huge gamble nonetheless. She put it up knowing Abigail is already sneaking up with murder behind her. I like to think that she is being incredibly observant of and listening to her surroundings at that very moment. The moment she hears any indication that Abigail still wants to proceed to kill her, she would get up and struggle to fight for her life.

I feel like the film was trying to make the point that even after everything they've been though, as soon as Yaya see's the luxury hotel her head goes straight back to her old way of thinking. There’s not way Yaya’s dead in my imagination of the ending, she knew Abigail didn’t want to leave the beach, she’s trying to convince her not to attack, and even if she did Yaya is younger and fitter. Also the woman who had the stroke could easily tell the others by written word about the vendor. And Carl running was in response to this information maybe, or he realised the threat to Yaya. Finally taking agency into his life.

I think that the ending makes you question why Carl ran 1. is it because that Abigail told him when she came back? or 2. Does he know what she is about to do when she leaves the ship? (that question is not fully true because Abigail before leaving said she needed some time with her (Yaya), which means that she needs time to explain to her what is happening between her and Carl) or 3. Abigail didn't do it and when Carl know that there was a way out of there he ran? but no from the video we know that Abigail did it

I was more curious about the "elevator & island resort" . . . Is that literal? A mirage? Or symbolic of the need to explore one's surroundings, put more effort into discovering the local resources in your "own back yard". I feel that the yacht's crew lady would have known about any resort in the area, but of course this isn't a film to taken absolutely literally or without some plot holes. Great film & exceptional tone, pacing performances & direction.

I think it's a metaphor as well as literal. It reminds me of when Tanya in White Lotus puts her mothers ashes down behind her suitcase, then panics that she's lost them. The hotel assistant has to find them for her, even though they're literally right behind her. 'A luxury hotel... It was here the whole time!' Basically, these rich people are so inept and used to someone doing everything for them, that they never thought to walk 10 minutes to find that they are in fact at a Luxury Resort. Only when Yaya loses her man, and drops her idea of needing a man to provide for her, does she finally decide to explore a little to find that she can in fact save herself without anyones help

I think Abigail returns without Yaya and tells everyone that she has died in some kind of accident (falling down and hitting her head). Carl then runs to go find her. Notice how Abigail and Yaya's trip to the other side of the island has them walking from the left side to the right side of the screen the entire time. The same direction Carl is running in the final scene. Carl's face is also being cut up by the the jungle he is running through but it doesn't seem to concern him. This shows that he is distraught and it could only be that he has just learned something shocking that would cause him to behave like this.

my interpretation would be: after being left alone by them inside the boat, carl comes to his sense. he might be worried that abigail will be up to something (you know, since he's the only one in that island knowing her most intimately). he probably could sense something wasn't right and he tried to save yaya.

I figured Abigail would be set up for life, the Russian salesman would repay her for saving him with a few watches and jewelry. She could sell the rights to the story. Her circumstances changed from the beginning. Killing yaya basically undoes any goodwill she would have had in the day or so before everyone sorts out they could have been "rescued" a day or so in. Felt like there were hints Abigail knew early on they were near a resort as well. Regardless, i know most of what we see wasn't really the point.

To me, Abigail was close to killing Yaya however, she couldn’t manage to kill her after Yaya’s manipulative offers. She found the only way to preserve her statue in island is to kill Yaya, who has just found a way out. So that she could take the advantage of the situation longer, but not till death since there would be people out there searching for them as Dimitri had said in a scene. Carl had already sense that there was a tension between Yaya and Abigail, besides, he already have started to feel over with what’s between Abigail and him. He was running to prevent Abigail from causing damage to Yaya. I’d say in the end he caughts Abigail with that rock behind Yaya, and Yaya manipulating her. I am wondering now that if he’d risk his life to save Yaya? I think Abigail is strong enough to take two of them in a row 🤔

Cinematography wise, i think the running scene of Carl is going towards the direction where Yaya is, who screamed after Abigail hit her. You can observe in the previous scene that Abigail is going from the left side of the screen, hence the direction to the elevator is towards the right of the screen, same as Carl's direction. And yes, i think Carl already knew that Abigail would be a threat to Yaya when they left him in the lifeboat. He is convinced when he heard Yaya's scream. That's why he said the F word while running.

I think Yaya is hallucinating about the resort - there is no resort (remember, I started with, I think). Abigail now the new leader and now structured in the new society they have formed, is jealous of Yaya, wants Carl only for herself, and hence murders Yaya. This shows the eventual form of greed we all come into in our social status. Carl running in the end is for us to guess and form our own opinion if he is running to save Yaya or Abigail, because he is sure one of the women will murder the other today. He may still be in love with Yaya, or he may now be in love with Abigail, or maybe he just sees his relationship with Abigail as so much luxury that he fears what will happen if Yaya murders Abigail. The movies intends all our interpretations to be correct depending on what we see and feel.
