ThinkOlio presents a deeper look at the creative life of a Jazz Age legend with Professor Charles Riley II.
The flapper roll call from Josephine Baker to Dorothy Parker and Edna St. Vincent Millay is incomplete without Zelda Fitzgerald. Hard-drinking sybarite relentlessly on the move to be wherever the party was, an artist and amateur ballet dancer, a journalist and novelist con brio, the fashion-forward Zelda was a meal ticket for gossip columnists from the time she hit Manhattan.
Biographers batten on her dalliances and feuds (notably, with Ernest Hemingway), even as literary critics call for greater recognition for her novel “Save Me the Waltz.” Join cultural historian Charles A. Riley II for an insider's look into the creative life of a Jazz Age legend, including the secret role she played in the revision of The Great Gatsby.
Charles Riley II, PhD, is an arts journalist, curator and professor at the City University of New York. He is the author of thirty-one books on art, architecture and public policy.

The amount of tabs I have open on my browser after watching this boggles the mind. If I ever were to have access to a time machine, this is PRECISELY where I would go! My gracious, this was interesting!

Thank you so much for your enthusiasm, Dr. This is a wonderful, informative lecture. Teachers (professors) always give their students room to grow, be proud and exert their knowledge. It shows that the lecturer isn't just all about him- or herself. Great style of delivery. Viewers, please note and know that an audience of attendees can also be considered students. Actually, I think many or some of the audience members are the professor's present or past students. Dr. Riley, thanks for sharing Zelda's story and how she influenced "Mr. Zelda's" writing. And we do appreciate how he tried to care for his wife as she suffered through her illness. She was indeed an innovative creative. Again, thank you for showing us this.

This is a veryv informative and amusingly "scattered" lecture. I agree with the Lecturer, Zelda"s Private One-on-One Therapy notes being publically exposed is a blatant Mental Health "Violation of Privacy" as well as a "Conflict of Inteest" on the part of the so called "Professional Health Field". This violation has also happened to others (not sure if one example is Sylvia Plath).. Best wishes to all other "fellow attendees" of this UTube lecture. Catch you at the next fascinating "Zeldafest"! ❤️❤️❤️

This is how I tell a story when I've had two bottles of wine and an Adderall. I wish he'd stop going off on tangents and asking the woman in the front row to fill in the gaps every few moments. I enjoy his enthusiasm, but stay on track, man. This lecture could have been delivered in 40 minutes with the same amount of information and less manic padding.

I just came across this part of history. I am amazed at how Professor Charles Riley II. is presenting the talk. I really really like his way and found with his lightness and funny ways it very easy to step into that time and to learn more about it.

I'd like to say how much I appreciate this video! Save the the waltz is one of my favourites, and I believe it is still underestimated. Zelda is an iconic image of Jazz Age, but unfortunately there's not enough information about her. This lecture is both very informative, deep and entertaining at the same time. I wish I had such teachers back in my college day. Thank you so much! Greetings from Ukraine :)

This is probably less exhausting if you already know everything he's going to say, because you wouldn't have to even make mental notes. But I came by to learn what I didn't already know, as I tend to do, when I shut up and just listen... Unfortunately, I'm not, as he puts it, "a ringer" in the audience, and I'm leaving now, because I'm too far behind whatever manic curve I'd have to ride to even hope to catch up to what I could have learned from this very passionate and probably interesting lecture.

The biggest tragedy is that when zelda cheated on Scott, society forced them to stay together. Back then divorce wasn't the quick fix we have today. But with them i think they needed to separate. You can't stay with someone if you refuse to forgive them

classical/Hellenic beauty was inspired by platonic proportions. HELLENISTIC BEAUTY WAS ROMANTIC AND NATURAL IN NATURE. MODERNISM'S BEAUTY WAS ROMANTIC AND SOCIALLY CRITICAL. TRY TO CAPTURE THE PATHOS IN THE GAME BETWEEN PEOPLE, NOT SOME ABSTRACT IDEAL OF IT'S PERFECTION.
