'Tales From the Bottle' goes undercover into the covert world of intelligence and counter-intelligence, and discusses the death of codebreaker Garreth Williams.
"Gareth Williams (26 September 1978 - c. 16 August 2010) was a Welsh mathematician and employee of GCHQ seconded to the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6) who was found dead in suspicious circumstances at a Security Service safe house flat in Pimlico, London, on 23 August 2010. The inquest found that his death was "unnatural and likely to have been criminally mediated." A subsequent Metropolitan Police re-investigation concluded that Williams's death was "probably an accident". It is also suspected that he should be numbered amongst those who have been killed by Russian assassins on British soil. Two senior British police sources have said some of Williams's work was focused on Russia - and one confirmed reports that he had been helping the NSA trace international money-laundering routes that are used by organised crime groups including Moscow-based mafia cells."

Creating the appearance that an important government agent is a sexual deviant is probably the most stereotypical act of espionage I can think of. In this case it was used to grant plausible deniability for whoever killed Williams by deflecting the blame onto Williams and his own supposed deviancy. The lack of fingerprints alone is enough for any reasonable person to conclude that this was an assassination. Moreover, if he were doing this for sexual gratification, why would he do it in the bath tub and not on his bed or some other comfortable place? Of course we have to explain the event in which he had to be untied from his bed. Note how he screamed to attract attention the first time, intending for people to rush to his aid. The second time? No screams--he didn't have time to scream. Now, Obviously he was into some strange stuff; but that doesn't mean he got in the bag for the same reason. Likely whoever did this knew that Williams had a strange fetish, so they used this knowledge to create a plausible "accidental" death. Again, no fingerprints, no sign that WIlliams ever handled the bag, presence in a suspicious location (bathroom,) guy is an MI6 spy, nothing lines up with accidental death by kinkiness and it all points to assassination IMO.

Everything I've seen about this case points to a professional hit where Gareth was killed somewhere else and put into the bag by someone who entered his hotel room with his key. Gareth's body was placed into the bath tub while the crime scene was cleaned and staged. Obviously, the embarrassing sexual possessions were intended to throw off the police. But the killer or killers had to leave the bag behind instead. They never had time to stage it as a suicide. Most likely as an auto erotic suicidal hanging which is a favorite method among killing among hitmen because it doesn't get investigated much further than that.

Ok anyone who seriously considers option 1 needs to get a psych eval and pronto. Let's just go over the facts shall we, and these are the ones we *know*, and this is MI6 we're talking about here so you know, literally their job is to cover up evidence Number 1) at the time of his death he was looking into Russian mafia business 2) the Russian mafia is heavily linked to the KGB 3) Admitting he knew the identity of the Russian spy is the only motive for murder in this entire affair 3) IF he got into the bag, how did he completely clean his whole flat of all DNA and fingerprints from inside the bag? Come on 4) If experts couldn't do it 400 times, and he couldn't untie himself from his bed, how did he do it? 5) A favoured assassination method of intelligence agencies is apparent suicide. Especially related to kinky sexual type stuff. Embarrasses the family into silence and creates a plausible alibi. 6) True fact, well done qxir untraceable poisons through the ear (leaving no needle marks) are another favoured pro murder method 7) What qxir didn't mention is that the heating in the flat was turned up to max even though it was the middle of summer. This would cause faster decomposition and make determining cause of death harder. Also, why, for what possible reason would Gareth do that? If he did, did he then wipe the thermostat clean of his own fingerprints? Why? Yes, exactly. 8) A computer genius left BDSM content on his laptop just for anyone to find? In general this absolutely reeks of covert ops elimination, and cover up. The killers knew how to professionally cover their tracks. The questions about why leave clues as to it being a murder when they could've made it look more like a suicide, are answered in the video. It's just to cause confusion and leave red herrings to befuddle the police and stop them looking, by leaving a plausible secondary scenario. It would have been very easy for any intruders to plant the women's clothing and access the websites on the laptop to create a cover story. I'm doing this for Gareth's family, to stop anyone being silly and dim enough to fall for the suicide angle. It's not a nice fate, for your son to die and dimwits be led to believe he took his own life when anyone with half a brain or even cursory knowledge of international espionage slightly above 'James Bond' level can see that this is a blatant cover up. The level of professionalism leaves only two possibilities, either the KGB or even MI6 though a Russian connection is more likely. I only mention MI6 as the fact it took coworkers several days to notice his absence from work and report it is HIGHLY suspect. If an intelligence operative misses even ONE DAY of work or even are 2 hours late they are immediately contacted and found as there is a possibility foreign adversaries have abducted or compromised your agent. Therefore there is a slight possibility MI6 either knew about the death and covered it up, possibly after having been informed by the Russians themselves and seeking to avoid an investigation, or for some reason did it themselves to stop Gareth revealing the identity of the known Russian spy in their ranks which would have been highly sensitive and privileged information they wouldn't want getting out. Him even revealing that, though I suspect it was a spur-of-the-moment, lapse of judgment situation when faced with assassins and wanting some kind of reason for them not to kill him, was very unfortunate as he would have known to never do that. Agencies will value that intel over your life. RIP Gareth.

When I was a young lad, I had a very large hockey bag. We used the climb in zip it up and try to smoke a whole joint. After about 5min the joint would go out and the lighter would stop lighting due to lack of oxygen. It would not have been hard to lock the zippers with a pad lock from inside the bag and it wouldn't have taken long in the bag to suffocate.

So a followup to the story - after the experts mentioned in this story came out and said there was no way he could've locked himself in the bag from the inside, a whole bunch of bandage fetishists online demonstrated exactly how to do it - and it's the same way you described. The key fact is that the bag was made of flexible fabric, so you can grip the padlock through the fabric. Not with enough precision to turn a key, but crucially, a padlock doesn't need a key to lock. You just need to be able to grip the shackle and the lock and push them together. You can do that through thick fabric. You would be able to open the zip - just a bit - and then you work the key through that tiny opening to get it into the padlock and get yourself free Of course, if you dropped the key, and the bag was too tight to roll over inside it, then you're stuck. So it's not exactly impossible - it's something that's been done and is still being done by bondsge fetishists and/or escape artists today. This would explain the lack of fingerprints on the lock - he was basically wiping it clean as he grasped it through the fabric. The lack of prints on the tub is more unlikely - but not impossible. It can be difficult to get clean prints at crime scenes - and there's always the risk that the first responders and investigating officers messed up the surfaces wrangling the bag out of the tub. There were also trace DNA found in the room - however, trace DNA isn't actually the foolproof evidence it's depicted as on TV. First, DNA degrades fairly quickly, and second, a hotel room would have traces of DNA from staff, previous guests, some guy's hair that he tracked in on his shoe, etc. However, what is suspicious is the bondage website thing. Because the investigation revealed that yes, he did visit bondage sites, but not that frequently. Not on a level you would consider obsessive. So a bit out of sybc that he'd go out of his way to make this elaborate setup.

Yes. Absolutely! Great story telling voice. I grew up in California where everyone talks either in a Hollywood way or surfer/valley girl. The other “English” speaking accents are often interesting to me. With a mild exception to Oasis who had such a thick accent MTV subtitled one of their interviews for the U.S. audience. Still interesting, I just couldn’t make out all the words. Genuinely wasn’t sure they were speaking English.

Playing around a lot with bags and zippers during my school and university time I cannot understand why anyone would call the guys who tried to lock themself in a bag experts. They have to grap the zippers differently, not at the part of the zipper you usually pull at, but at the part that you can also touch from the inside. Like index finger outside, thumb inside, then you can also pull it together from the inside. The Lock you can attach while they are both still quite a bit appart from each other, although it is difficult, by holding it not directly in your hands but with the fabric of the bag between lock and fingers, so you don't need to have your hands outside of the bag. It is not really more difficult then tying both your hands to your bed. Especially both hands at different sides I would imagine to be actually harder. So yeah, I think this man was really good in tying himself up but sadly not in unleashing himself.

Another question I feel is important to ask is... why wasn't he screaming? That's how his neighbors found him the first time, right? Those types of bags aren't typically airtight so I imagine it would've taken a while to suffocate screaming or no, so where were his neighbors during all this? I feel like it'd make more sense if he was put in the bag while unconscious.

Here's what I think happened: The incident where the landlord lady had to help was where someone or multiple someone's came to his living space and threatened him with a gun, tied him, and either interrogated him or threatened him for what he was doing/learning about. I think he screamed and they ran off, which is when the landlord lady eventually showed up and he knew he couldn't say anything. So I think the second part was most likely the same person or persons harassing him at gun point, degrading him too. I think they made him get in the bag but they were the ones to close it and lock it. I also think he was poisoned which is why he didn't just scream once trapped in the bag and why he died so quickly compared to how he would have slowly died from malnutrition in the bag otherwise. There was no dna found because it was a combination of the assailants knowing what they were doing (wearing gloves, not touching much, not leaving any kind of bodily fluids, etc) and the fact that he was not found until days had passed (time not only gets rid of small evidence but it also could make it far harder to tell if he was poisoned) Then finally, I believe whoever did that to him did it after they got the information they wanted, since they chose to poison him after and leave.

If he could shout for help when he tied himself to the bed I’m sure he would have been heard shouting for help if he locked himself in a bag. In conclusion he has to have been killed before being put in the bag or had some sort of trauma happen to cause him not to be able to speak. The second one never shows up on a coroners report.
