I’ve been reading through an amazing new manuscript version of Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway published by SP Books and it’s shown me how her original version of the story was very different from the finished novel. Click ‘Show More’ for links & info.

Such a lovely video; I just finished reading Mrs. Dalloway for the very first time and I was searching for some internet resources to help me navigate better through her process. Luckily, I stumbled across your work here and I’m so happy I did. You are ever so enthusiastic and articulate. Thank you so much.

I recognised the flower shop at Herne Hill Station. Loved Mrs Dalloway and have been to the Bloomsbury group farm in Sussex and have done some of the tapestries that are in the house.

This was beautiful and so fascinating! I had no idea about the publication of this edition! I’ve had Mrs.Dalloway on my shelf for a couple of years now and have always felt that I would love it, but this made me want to pick it up straight away. As you were when reading Virginia Woolf’s notes in the manuscript, I am with second-hand copies of books: I love being able to read along with someone and see the book from a perspective other than my own!

I loved this so much, I absolutely love the way you talk about your favorite authors, your passion is so pure and VERY contagious (I am totally starting with JCO this summer!) and I've found myself recently enamored with Woolf (not just her books but her life, personality in general, she fascinates and excites me so much I haven't had the nerve to pick up her books, its weird but I'm afraid it will kill me) anyway, I was kind of forced to read To The Lighthouse for a university project and OH MY GOD, to say it blew me away would be an understatement, it brought me out of my reading slum, my sister laughed at me as I read more than half the book pacing my room because I couldn't sit down the way she makes you experience life from 10 dimensions spontaneously, its absolutely surreal. Definitely reading Mrs Dalloway in a month and then getting my hands on this original! ❤❤ Also, please talk about that memoir you recently reviewed on goodreads that's constructed around TTL.

Thank you! 😊 Yeah there's so much there to unpick and muse over both in the books and concerning her life. You shouldn't be nervous about reading more of her books. It's good to have our point of view blown away like that sometimes. And yes, I'll be talking about Smyth's memoir in my next wrap up video. Thanks for watching. 📚❤️

This was a great geek-athon! I think I may be one of the few literate gay men I know who isn't head over heels with Woolf. I like her work, but have never LOVED her work. It's always fascinating to read an original version of a well-known work to see it in progress, and I love your enthusiasm and insights into her process of making this. I've only read it once, and this video has made me want to re-visit it. Perhaps I'll nudge ever-so-nearer to the love side of appreciation. Thanks.

Thank you! Yeah there's definitely a circle of worship around her. I think she writes in a way which is frequently just odd, but that makes it so intriguing to me. Unpicking all those layers and poetic imagery. Hope you enjoy her if you give her another whirl. 📚❤️

It’s interesting to see two novels about 1981 appear in this list. I remember that year very well for its social unrest and rampant inflation. I lived in Bristol at the time and there was serious racial unrest there too. I’m saddened that society doesn’t yet include people in a way that prevents these divisions. I remain ever optimistic that these types of books will help tip the balance though 🤓

Nice video. I'm just finishing Mrs Dalloway... at first I hated it, as I am reading it in order to be able to help a student with the Extended Essay, which is what they are doing for an IB Assessment. I have to admit, I find the style of writing a bit hard going at times, but as I read more I really started to semi enjoy it and appreciate the style a little more than at first. Yes, it's great to notice the passing of the day as punctuated by Big Ben and also the visualisations of London's landmarks. I'll have to watch a few more KZfaq videos to pick up on more of the novel that I missed when I read it. The Septimus thread of the story was very sad, though I didn't really pick up as I was reading it that Mrs Dalloway also had issues with mental instability.
