For so many years, I wondered how Albert got that awesome squeaky/juicy tone! This vintage MXR Script Phase 90 is certainly one small part of it 🎛🎸

He did use that pedal with Stevie for "In Session". A lot more about went into his tone though.....higher output pickups in the Flying V(Dan Erlewine built his 2nd one)...light gauge strings, a Roland solid state amp, the technique of not using a pic but the thump of his thumb and upstroke of his forefinger would help with that "squeel"....upside down strings tuned down a full step w/ the low A and E strings tuned down even a step further. There's even more but a lot went into his sound that also includes bending everything down using .09s.

What supports the claim of him using .09s?

@@AdrianAndersson I don't know if he used a .09 set but it is known that when he saw Steve use .13s he snorted what the heck strings were that thick.

oh yeah, the phaser! nailed it, great bends, heard that Albert liked really light gauge strings. Thanks for sharing

Great observation, I realized that listening to the recordings with SRV. King had monster tone, Doyle Bramhall II does a great job dialing into a pretty close Albert tone. Great video. 🤘🏻

Also, it helps a lot to get a Brown Face or Tweed style amp, and almost dime the Presence knob, to at least the 3-o-clock position, maybe more, with of course, a dual PAF humbucker guitar.

You did a great job emulating AK's licks, style and tone. Truly. I began listening to AK in the mid 60's but what I'm about to say I know is going to be guitar heresy and you all will be ready to burn me at the stake. I don't recall precisely what year it was but I think it was c. '74 or '75 about the time AK went from Stax to the Tomato label but someone saw fit to add a flanger to his signal chain and in my opinion, totally ruined his sound. It is only conjecture for sure but I just can't imagine that he was good with that tone change. Maybe the suits told him it was really hip, the "young people" would dig it and he would sell more records. The tone we can all hear/see in the You Tube videos of AK at the Fillmore East (and on late 60's Stax records) is in my mind, THE Albert King tone. He was playing his original Korina Flying V through big Fender amps at the Fillmore (Dual Showman's I believe) and that combination gave him a really huge, clean sound but with all the sustain he needed. I've also seen him with that V through big Acoustic Amps. Although solid state, AK made it work in a fine way. He needed no effects. So for me, when I hear him on records like In Session, (and other examples) its a huge disappointment. That record was no doubt a great showcase for SRV and he showed due respect for Albert but King's tone just didn't do it for me. Of course, just my opinion. Ok, I guess you can start that fire now. Stay well everyone...

You are entitled to your opinion but i think you are overly critical. He played in a studio with SRV, to begin with you can’t play with Dual Showman’s in that setting and Albert played in smaller venues like clubs for the most part of his career. For obvious reasons he needed to use something less powerful and thus his tone would be different. Secondly his use of the phaser in that recording was quite subtle overall which in my opinion didn’t take anything away from his tone.
