Yes, super helpful thanks! Maybe more for wildlife and scenes like animals and water falls, I have a tendency to stage and center frame most everything and scrap anything with blurred motion and I'd like to break out of that, it's a struggle.

I love the way you draw out the exposure. This will come in handy when I use it to make a water fall look like silk. Back in the day when I took photo journalism . Rule 1 get the shot.. We used 4X5 speed graphic camera.

Interesting video Jared. I do some sporting photography so may try this out. The only problem I would have is not being able to use a tripod as I move around a lot....As far as settings go, it is possible to "over think" what is needed. I would take a couple of test shots, then make adjustments from there.

Great idea of getting an ballpark settings from Shutter Priority. Only caveat is if you only have one quick chance, say of a bird flying by. Then I like Shutter Priority, because I don't have any time to mess around. Curious how you feel about auto ISO to go with the Shutter Priority.

Would I be able to use this method on a drag strip with cars flying by at a 150+ mph would it focus on the car but still show the movement?
@kevindiaz3459
@kevindiaz3459 6 жыл бұрын
I would use panning techniques for that. Similar concept, but you are moving the camera to track the subject as it moves. Car stays in focus, everything else blurs.

In sports photography for many years conventional wisdom was to froze the action to get tact sharp images, then recently more and more people are willing to break that rule to create blurred motion, and i saw this happening in all the sports disciplines. For soccer in Europe, it started with an italian guy if i remember well and it was his signature when he wanted to sell his photos to sports newspapers. I forgot the name of the person, if ever his name comes back, i will edit this post.

you don't need that f-number like f/14. Simply set your iso at the base like 100 or 64 and use wide open aperture .by this way you get much cleaner image.

OMGoodness, Jared! They are ⅓ stop increments! 2⅓ less on the sensitivity, (Exposure Index), 1⅓ more on the aperture, ⅓ more on the shutter. So you have gained 1⅔ stops on shutter and aperture, lost 2⅓ stops on EI, total is ⅔ stops darker. Most cameras, when on manual, can change the exposure in full-stop, half-stop, or ⅓-stop increments, usually selectable by the user from the menus.

or... u can start (in manual) with 1/15 and just watch ur light meter on ur camera and go from there.

f/14 ISO800? Photo would be identical but with 1/8th of the noise if you shot f/5 ISO100. 3 Stops is a lot, when extending shutter speed, lowering ISO should always be the first call, not aperture. And for Jared, you'd benefit from staying in manual but just turning on auto ISO when you can't do the maths during an action shoot. That way you can keep a wider aperture and pick an appropriate shutter speed.

Christopher O'Grady at f/5 you would not get the same depth of field, thus the image would not be the same. Most likely the players or "Buzz" would be completely out of focus and all you would be left with is a typical portrait photo of someone's back. Sexy.
@chrisogrady28
@chrisogrady28 6 жыл бұрын
TheHellis not significantly, it’s only at 70mm. That shit at f/5 would look very similar, especially as the players are motion blurred anyway. The point is mostly about how far off it is, 3 stops is a hell of a lot off optimal. Maybe you’d want f/8 and ISO250 if you’re interested in the sharpness of the hoop or something.

No way would f5 get as much in focus as f14 did.... It's not always about light and noise. Sometimes you have to let a little noise creep into your image to capture more focus.
@chrisogrady28
@chrisogrady28 6 жыл бұрын
Jett Life Productions it would still capture the same important elements, no one is looking at the sharpness of the basketball hoop.
@TheHellis
@TheHellis 6 жыл бұрын
Christopher O'Grady I believe you would notice and it would change the picture enough to be more of a portrait feel than sport indoors. You want to see the hoop, you want to see the depth.

That was an extremely complicated explanation.. Basically, for sports, if you want to freeze, shoot at 1000th/sec or above. If you want some blur, try 500th/sec. The lower you go, the more blur. Go from there, and pic a shutter speed that gives you the blur you like.
@froknowsphoto
@froknowsphoto 6 жыл бұрын
That is way over simplified. You will freeze action at 1/250th depending on the action.
@itts
@itts 6 жыл бұрын
Yea I know, and that's true, but at 1/250th during something like a football game you'll get a blurry football during a kick or header, etc.

Yup...manual 98% of the time, shutter/aperture priority 2% of the time. Full auto 0% of the time. And I use auto ISO for video so the video doesn't look all screwed up as I go from recording light to dark stuff. Use the tools you have, right?

@TruBBQtv 6 жыл бұрын
Jared Polin I wouldn't care if you didn't use clickbait to get more views. Teach people? More like trick people for views. If your content is good the views will come, without needing a clickbait title. And if you can't take people not agreeing with what you upload on KZfaq, then make it a private video. But then you wouldn't get many views. Just stick with gear reviews and sniffing cameras.
