Driving the limit of grip is something we all strive for. But it can be a fine balancing act between setting lightning fast time, and heading a** first into the Armco. Sound lke something you’re strugglign with with? Well make sure you concentrate, low down on how you can drive on the limit like a pro and do them infamous slip angle technique (lol)
Let me introduce you to my friend, the traction circle, I think youll get along. It’s probably the easiest way of teaching people the basics of tyre grip, which as you know, is the single most major barrier between driving like a pleb and a god. In the traction circle, there’s 4 axis. Braking, accelerating, or turning either way. Pretty simple right? Well, not quite. Because, before we see I teach you how to use it, you need to fully understand how tyres work.
So let me explain it in fortnite terms. Tyres can only take a certain amount of abuse before they give out. Our lovely michelins only have 100 health. Now stick with me here. Whenever we accelerate, turn or brake, the tyres take some damage. So for example, accelerating hard could do 40 damage , then if adding a bit of steering, doing 60 damage, the tyres health is depleted and they go to the gulag… or lose grip
It’s all about managing and balancing the amount of load we put onto the tyres. As a driving god, you’ll need to keep this basic principle in the back of your mind at all times, and always be cautious of how much damage you’re dealing to your tyres. But don’t worry if you cant do this, because there is a quick and easy way to visualise this, without needing to use one of two of those all important braincells.
And that is to use the traciton circle I mentioned earlier. This inner circle represents 100 health, or the limit of grip. And see that small dot? That’s how much damage you’re doing, it’s measured by the g forces exerted through the car.
So, if you accelerate, you can see we’re doing about 40 damage to the tyre, and the G forces are travelling rewarwards through the car. Throw in some steecircle too, and you can see we’re getitng awfully close to killing the tyre, or the limit of grip, and the g forces are now travelling rear and left. If you accelerate and turn too much, you’re going to go over the 100hp and lose traction.
But what if I told you that everything ive been teaching you so far is a big fat like? Well, more on that in a moment.
For now, I’m going to make a massive, baseless assumption about your driving skill, so make sure you listen up to know whether you should get offended or not. When you first try out the traction circle, it’ll look one of two ways, let’s call them noob 1 and noob 2.
So here’s noob 1. They/them aren’t utilising very much of the tyre’s health, and this is shown by the dot getting nowhere near the circle. This means they’re breaking too early, accelerating too softly or not cornering hard enough. They’re nowhere close to the limit of grip, meaning they are slow af.
Hit the like, and maybe even subscribe button if you enjoyed the video!

the circle: this is your maxim lateral grip considering longitudinal stress the weight transfer in braking/accel: loads the tyres changing the front to rear grip balance and the net numeric value of the axle grip to me the thing shouldn't be circular also: brake bias can enter the chat as the porcentage of longitudinal stress can be different between rear and front, and same goes for accelerating in any drivetrain the ride height and the wheelbase length can increase or decrease this effect: longer and lower cars will be closer to the circle, oposite for short tall cars we would still missing aero and road condition effects on the graph edit: this is personal opinion as I'm not engineer or any professional shit, take it into account

I'm not going to lie I recall being aware of this "slight traction loss" long ago and purposely forcing my cars to do it. I never realized it has a proper naming for it, nor knew why or how it was produced, I always considered it to be just the same as losing total traction, but done so briefly the car could manage to "recover" soon enough to not spin out. This wouldn't be the first technique I've been doing in many games completely unaware of how it was named, but apparently it's the one I utilized the most, and the one that gave me a bigger edge when racing. I particularly recall Project Cars 2's formula cars being me just mastering this technique, my dumbass decided to hit that difficulty all the way up and I couldn't do shit without falling to the bottom of the list, besides this. I then realized I was overdoing it when my tires were completely dead a couple of laps before the race was over, still gave me enough time to manage the first place, but man were those last laps frustrating as hell. You're doing god's work with these videos, they're quite entertaining, simple yet detailed enough to teach pretty much anyone these days without becoming a chore. Keep it up!

I actually watch these videos because there’s a fair bit of theory that applies to just driving in real life. I’m not saying I’ll have to inertia drift at 60+km in regular traffic, but it’s good to keep a mental recollection of what the CoM will do with which control so you won’t understeer or spin out just in case you need to make quick decisions during an emergency.

Noone really looks on artificial circle while driving, it's the matter of feeling. While driving i'm constantly utilising touch, balance and sight senses. And while simracing, through force feedback, touch sense is only way to feel "unglueing" of tyres. Instead of watching some dot in circle, one must focus on the forces that steering wheel are telegraphs.

Probably the best tip to noobie sim racers. Anytime someone tries my sim rig, it's full on brake or acceleration, no in between 😅 Once you get the hang of the cars grip, sim racing just clicks and becomes really fun. Before that it can feel really hard to drive and even do a normal paced lap.

make video on hypermiling: accelerating, braking and steering alll done minimally and steadily, push power more closer to optimally efficient rpm as specifified by engine bfsc chart... all for less maintainence time and money in tire, brake, engine oil, fuel/electrcity, battery longevity. keep tire pressure optimal as specified by car company, usually in owners manual, change oil every 5000 miles, clean out air filter. this is like less extreme racing, you need to get places on time but also trying to minimize loss in tire brake engine performance and need to change that stuff mid race, every bit of drama is more purposeful ths exciting, better than only driving fast for fun. explain weights affect on saftey as done in aptera owners club video on safety, although lighter is not really so less safe than heavy, especially if using higher budget structural strentgth materials, heavy makes it less safe for lighter car which tend to be more common because they tend to be designed for cheap running cost in money and time, low emissions high long term materials economy sustinability for growing human population. mention that weight and weight futhur away from ground makes car less to handle speed around turns within a given budget of tire grip, power etc, more weight expoentially adds road wear payed for by taxes, semitruck downtime etc. announce a small discord i can send more idea

to me i like to think of the traction circle and the g graph as 2 separate things. The g graph is the circle with the dot on it, the dot moving with your gas and steering movements etc. But the traction circle to me is just the name of the circle itself, that represents the limit at which the car loses grip. The graph of gs being maneuvered in a smooth way is essentially a version of the water cup technique, where youd roll the water, or the dot, around the cup, or traction circle. a good way of thinking about it is that the spectrum of drift and grip are like 2 halves of a semicircle. The left part is the drift side, and the right part is the grip side, and the limit is right in the middle. You can drive with different styles on each side of the line, but approaching the line itself is the key to speed. This idea kindof extends into the traffic circle where inside the circle is grip and outside is drift, the idea is similar but a little more complex. the line at 3:54 is not exactly ideal, the transition from braking to steering is too abrupt and creates a sharp corner of sorts at the top. In initial D takumi would throw his inertia slightly the opposite way of the corner entry, to get the dot to go slightly left during the braking, and then swinging smoothly across the top, into the curve around towards the bottom end, where he would perform a similarly smooth application of the gas. This would prevent the water splashing out the front end of the cup during his intense braking, and essentially allow him to brake more. I know that line is the ideal and all but i think its important to note that you dont want those sharp corners on the top and bottom of the D shape. In reality the straight side of the D would slightly arc outwards towards the R side just enough to allow you to smoothly swing through the curve side.

My technique is after braking hard for a corner i release quickly so the rear tires kick out but then instead of countersteering i steer so much that i start understeering at the same time as im oversteering. Basically initiating a four wheel drift from the entry to the exit, bc then i just start countersteering a little when i reach my ideal drift angle then you'll be surprised how much easier the car aligns back to the exit. This entire thing puts a lot of stress on the tires but its very effective and safe if you do it right

Cool video, loved the editing! lol I guess I'm the noob #2 cuz ever since I got better at drifting in assetto I just push every car to the limits ending up drifting most of the corners. But yea grip racers are faster on the touge, it's just that I have much more fun drifting so I won't stop, not like I am aiming to become the best racer anyway.
