@@merienda4958 it is not exaggerated. Millennials are the generation who have been exposed to most content in the history of mankind. This is from science to entertainment to everything. I have read so many books, so many mangas, comics etc. The only one that has been able to hold the top spot has been one piece. Marvel comics, Dc comics, dbz, pokemon, naruto, death note, hunter x hunter. They all just feel like a trend compared to one piece. And the best part is we get to experience it first hand. Oda tells a manga story like a novel. As simple as that. Most manga artist don't do much world building. They keep it at a core minimum. With a fantasy novel that spans over multiple volumes such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, you need to be very detailed to make everything believable.
@skelitonking117

This! Exactly this! Oda *IS* a good writer yes, that much is undeniable, but he only seems like a total *genius* because of the medium he’s chosen to write in, and the peers he is thus compared too. Toriyama basically started the Shonen manga trend, and is considered one of its pinnacles; but his story telling is actual pretty average and he forgets *A LOT* of his own work, and thus tries to avoid too much world-building.
@leonvisters5348

Couldnt agree more. This too prove a point on why some are not really into OP and preferred a more direct writing due to the long story telling from the world building itself.

I'd like to add that oda sensei methods of storytelling are actually common practice for many writers. It's the frame of his story that truly unleashes his genius and creativity. An adventure with characters as dear as friends to the reader won't get boring and will hardly ever feel off track. Oda is as free in his writing as Luffy is in his story. There is also to add, that oda breaks his monumental story into manageable arcs. This is a perfect advice to achieve seemingly unreachable goals. Divide the goal into steps and steps into solvable tasks. Reaching milestones is unbelievable important to keep up the spirit
@alexatwood6904
@alexatwood6904 3 жыл бұрын
This method of character writing gives me some George R.R. Martin vibes, he makes the character and then plugs them into the plot, the arc they go on is a very natural development as be takes the character logic and applies it to their plot situations. Character X might die acting one way in a scenario. Where as character Y may survive doing what they would do. Then the story moves along as such. Considering how many characters there are in one piece I feel that would be the ideal way to make them all feel authentic and apply some improv to keep things on their toes, sometimes you never know what will happen in One Piece. But it is always true to character logic.

The imagination within Oda's mind is fascinating in the storytelling of One Piece. The journey is a great exposure of the world and we get to see from Island to Island. And the fact he got inspiration from film directors like Tim Burton and Quentin Tarantino may explain the strange and sometimes quirks amongst the characters in the storytelling.

I read the Harry Potter novels and the twilight novels and even the game if throne novels I can't totally imagine all the places and characters without their live actions I will definitely won't know how amazing the characters and places the authors put into words. The part about next level empathy towards the characters really spoke to me. I'm writing a story myself right now for a game. And giving my characters these "non-essential" details may actually help me create them in a way where the world adapts organically to them and they don't have to "play their role", they can just exist. It would definitely take a lot of stress off my shoulders but nailing the part where everything isn't only logical and realistic but also inspiring and satisfyingly concluding is the most difficult for me to understand about Oda-san's writing style.

A big thing is how much One Piece means to him. He more or less started writing it when he was 11 years old as a fanfic. During his entire teenagehood and early adolescence it was somethign he constantly did on the side. Adding characters, world building, coming up with stories in his head and more. As soon as he graduated art school he wanted to start making One Piece for Shounen Jump. He became an assistant as that was kind of required but after only a year he pitched his concept. It was rejected because he was still so new but they gave him a few pointers which he implemented and 2 years after that it was accepted. So that's a big reason why he hasn't burned out after over two decades. One Piece truly is his life's work and his dream come true. He grew up with it. That's also why I think when One Piece is finished Oda will go into semi-retirement. He likely will still draw manga from time to time but never anything as grand as One Piece.

Personally I think it's because of his ability to switch and change things up at the last second; he's not just dead set on finishing the story in one specific way, or at least, the journey to get there (which is what One Piece Is all about) take the supernova for example, they weren't meant to be in the story at all until around the start of the arc, but they're basically the main characters and the ones we should look out for now

I feel like one piece and oda will go down in history even in the far future as one of the greatest stories and authors in history. No story in the modern world has been so weird and discounted from reality but at the same time connected to the giant world and the hundreds of characters so personally.

Great video I got to commit to this I started a story and I did the outline detailing the main characters first and the start plus where I want the story to go moving on. I finish chapter one but procrastinating on finishing idk lack of confidence even though this just a draft sigh. I want to be consistent in 2021 wish me the best. This really good tips and a motivating video, I am going to work on it thanks. Oda is such a great storyteller

No wonder I love Oda and his story so much! I have the exact same approach to writing my stories - the same weird mixture of perfectionism and improvisation! This really gives me hope that once I have the time and can work on this story I have in my mind, I will be able to create something people can enjoy :D

Oda doesn’t just write for 15 years olds. He also writes for when his audience are complete adults to understand the message behind the story and make it sometimes mature for the audience. An example that Toriyama should learn from.

Oda art is very structured when it comes to story telling but yet his art possessed some mix with surrealism. At the very start he could see the vision of what one piece should be. He is amazing totally legendary.

the best mangas are the emotional ones, Oda is very good at creating emotional tension. The story is not very complex but very emotional. One manga that plays the emotional card even better than one piece is ''demon slayer''. We, humans, are primarily emotional creatures.

Bro one thing i like about one piece is that every member of crew fights with enemy crew of same or 1 notch high power level. Luffy vs Lucci , Zoro vs Kaku, Sanji vs Jabra, etc. Unlike other animes where the main character comes and beats the crap out of all (Goku, Naruto, All Might, Saitama).

The apparent contradiction in Oda sensei's behavior can be a cultural trait, just as it can be a common feature in perfectionists: something like an unconscious false modesty - don't know a better way to put it. Whatever it is, Oda sensei is brilliant. Great video! :)
