I see a lot of artists worrying about art style, and it's definitely something I used to worry about as well. I thought I needed one to improve and get better at drawing -- but as you will see in the video, that isn't necessarily the case.

I just don’t get the obsession with “having a style”, just draw and steal what you think looks good. When you have stolen from a lot of artists, you’ll have a “style”.

I guess the obsession is to find what they like. When you copy others, (even though you like it) that tends to be the only thing you do. You never grow off of that, because it’s what your mind was trained to do. (From experience) People don’t just wanna copy all day, they want to have a fully functioning style, that THEY enjoy and love. So I think this is where the “I have to find my artstyle!” Comes from, because everyone around them has there’s figured out, and they’re standing there like “but what about me? I’ve tried for years and still cannot find it!” My thing is, just draw. Finding a style isn’t what’s important. I mean, it can be, but it shouldn’t be the main focus where it drives you away from your art. Try to see what things YOU want to do, and not look at others. Chances are, they aren’t gonna have what you want.

Just draw what you want to draw, any way you like to draw. Refine it until you can't anymore And all of a sudden everyone else will say you have a style lol

For me personally, I’m obsessed with it because I want to be known for my work, for someone to look at a panel and be like “Oh this person made this” like how I can look at a bleach panel and immediately know who made it

I think obsession with artstyle is more of the want/need to express/show things the same way as the artist that you admire. It's kind of a cute love letter if you ask me. You look at an artist and you love the way their art looks/makes you feel, to the point you want to do it as well. Then people obsess with artstyle because they want to evoke the same emotion like the artworks that inspired them example: "This artwork is so cool, I want to do that too!" >>>> The quest for artstyle begins. You could also be proud of your work but unfortunately some will see it and be like "this looks like x-senpai artwork" or "You used a reference didnt you?" which leads to insecurity or deminished accomplishment because your time and effort has been looked down on because you clearly took inspiration from someone else ---> Leads you to think you need your own original style to be recognised. Otherwise it could be for marketing or commission aspects and some types of artstyle get more attention than others, or simply some wants to be popular. There are many reasons to obsess with artstyle either for self expressions through characters/stories, marketing or popularity gains. But honestly if someone wants to copy or learn another artist style, it is one of the highest compliments imo, because they love it so much that they want to make it as well.

Maybe I'm a heathen, but I noticed that artstyle is like handwriting. Once you learn to write, it eventually evolves in a direction, and that's it. You could force yourself to write another way, but your handwriting is your style.

You don't just find your style, your style will find YOU. I drew for a long long time thinking "I wonder when I'm going to find my style..." when one day my fiancée told me that something I had drawn felt very fitting to my style. I asked her what she had meant and if she was saying I had some kind of style, and she said as if it were completely obvious that I clearly had one. Starting to look back, I could see bits and pieces in retrospect that really were like little fingerprints of things I had done that she mentioned. Sometimes you really need another set of eyes, because you're probably not going to notice you've developed one until someone points it out to you.

You can looks at any veteran manga artist to see how their styles constantly change and shift over time to suit their aesthetic, preferences and sometimes even just their age. Older manga artists tend to get more conservative with intricate linework, whereas in their youth, they might have gone absolutely nuts over it - and that shows a skill in choosing what to emphasize that only develops with time. When Hirohiko Araki was asked why he doesn't draw his old characters in the style that manga was at the time, he just said simply - "I forgot how to draw like that". That's just it, because it's also a fascination and inspiration with certain kind of works also popular at the time. Trying to see style influences (and influences in general) is something that I really enjoy about art, because it also helps me understand how these great artists and writers think, what they feel free to experiment with, what they feel okay to include in their works and it can just feel very playful and fun. So in essence, just draw what you like and get tired with trying to perfectly replicate it/get pressured for time/get a little bit lazy over time/ just have fun! That's where your style will be!

i think "what's my art style?" is an artist's version of the question, "who am i?" and always our identities are shaped by the people who have the most influence to us, but at the same time whether we're aware of this or not, everyone writes in their own font anyway

Copying a style without learning fundamentals is like copying some else's homework without understanding their solution. Sure it gives u a nice picture at that moment but u learn nothing useful and can't improve beyond a certain point. Learned that the hard way myself 😢 so keep drawing those boxes 😂

Good luck man, drawing can be frustrating and can take a TON of time to learn, but with the right attitude, discipline and motivation, you'll get there in no time, keep studying smart, don't overwork yourself and make sure to rest between the studying! Keep yerself hydrated as well Drawing is supposed to be fun, not a task that you HAVE to do and NEVER, never compare yourself to other artists that have drawn for years in a way like "They're so much better" na, see what you like, implicate it into your drawings and do it until it becomes muscle memory, keep trying and never give up, no pressure here man, other people on the internet would most likely be more than happy to guide ya.

This drove me crazy for years! I've tried drawing on so many different styles. I've been influenced and inspired by so many different artists. I'd copy their character or their style, then I'll try to draw out on my own, and it'll look horrible lol! My style now is pretty much 90's cartoony style, and I've embraced it. I mean, it only took me like over 20 years to figure this out, but I'm happy now lol! Great topic!

You are so right with people being obsessed with finding an artstyle and hyper-fixating on it. I think im still on that boat in which i feel like i studied art to the point where i wanted to at least try and find my own style. But no matter how i drew things after the people I admired, they would never be close to their quality. Many people just dont realize the years of work and practice the artists we admire put in.

I heard this a long time ago and I still consider it true. Calling it an art style is a bit inaccurate. Think of it as your voice. It's just naturally the way your art comes out because of your unique intersection of taste, knowledge, and life experience. Thinking of it that way takes the pressure off of trying to find it and can help you focus more on just learning how you like to do things.

I've been getting semi-inspired to pick up drawing again. Although, for me, since I have a problem with perfectionism, I've been discouraged to for a while. A problem I have with anything is that I know I'm not going to be very good at it when I start, so I don't start. But I've been watching your videos for a little while now, and the casualness of them is really helping me want to get back into drawing. I'm probably gonna go pick up a few how-to-draw books from a library soon, so hopefully I'll start making progress soon.

the fixation with "art style consistency" was a huge thing that plagued my earlier work, eventually i got over myself and just let myself draw whatever i wanted. funnily enough, this actually led to my work becoming way more visually consistent since i've worked out how i do linework and coloring in the way that's the most fun for me personally. i think anyone trying to develop a style should focus on what they like (neat vs messy lineart, simple vs detailed coloring, soft vs angular shapes, etc.) and not try to force themselves into artstyles they don't have fun drawing. well-put video! you've earned a subscribe from me :)

@4:39 This reminded me of an explanation an English teacher I had in school gave when talking about grammar and why there are so many examples of these giants among writers breaking the rules of grammar. "They know the rules and are breaking them to get exactly where they want to go." The thing about rules in creative fields isn't knowing them and staying staunchly beholden to them at all times, but instead to allow you know know the basic forms and shapes that they can take on, and then break the rules to bend the language to assist in putting your ideas into another persons head. If you break rules without knowing them, it won't help you do that. It just comes out a mess of broken thoughts, few of which even indicate toward the idea you wanted to get across. But if you know the rules, you can break intentionally them in order to better communicate ideas. Intentionality is the important thing.

"your style will shine no matter how you choose to draw that nose in the moment" this is SO TRUE. I change my style up a lot, as in when i watch a new tv show or play a new game and want to draw characters from there i usually change my style up a bit (say i usually draw semi-realism and i get a hyperfixation on idk, Adventure time, id suddenly draw a way more cartoony style) and each time i draw something i share it with my friends, and they ALWAYS say "its so crazy how your art still looks like its made by you even though its a completely different style"

Interestingly, when it comes to learning the fundamentals I feel like I'm learning it backwards. Evertime I see someone draw my brain is automatically analyzing the shapes and movements they use. Its honestly the practice part that gets me. As learning the hand eye coordination feels like alarm bells in my head telling me everything is wrong even though I already know I suck. I've made progress, though, so that's what matters.

tbf artstyle is just an accumulation of anatomy errors that we make, like and keep in our art. i used to be so obsessed with finding my own and i remember crafting frankenstains of things i liked from other artists but it always was tedious and annoying to keep it up. i gave up on it and just kept drawing. with time my skill improved, i practiced more anatomy and proportions. When my skill got to the point of being able to draw lines and proportions freely and confidently (if that makes sense) i started noticing tendences for specific ways of drawing this or that and if i liked them i kept them, if i didnt i corrected them. Plus arstyle is something that will smoothly and slowly change trough time. obsessing over it is probably the last thing that will help finding it

If I have to describe my current rt style with just one word. I'd pretty much be "Amalgamating". Whenever I draw a character, my brain cherry picks minor aspects from existing designs and just mishmash 'em together with my own little touches. It may not be a perfect style, but I do like how I draw and it can be improved overtime.

The thing about always having a style is very true. When I was little I would draw very thin figures. That went for every animal, not just humans. They looked like someone had deflated them. Now that I have more practice and knowledge under my belt, I have been able to use that to my advantage to make snakes and dragons and any sort of sharp-looking creature. While that doesn't mean my style is only that forever, it gives my art a very unique flare and some fun shape. I would also like to say that style is influenced by the tools you use. I've always been in love with bold line work, but I tend to ease up on it a lot more with my paper drawings and focus more on shadow. I also don't usually do any color on paper, mostly because I don't want to spend that much on pencils or markers, but also because I find pencil and a bit of pen to just be how I enjoy traditional art.

"Art style" is my a-word. It's spmething that only makes sense in the concept of a show, movie, or comic where the model sheets and backgrounds have to be aesthetically consistent, but the way newer artists think about style makes them think that they have to only be capable of drawing in one or two ways

alright zerobobu is a cute pronunciation and I think it's perfectly valid lol. Also I love trying to replicate stuff and it looking like absolute garbo even tho the steps taken are not that different on the surface, there's just so many thing that can make an art besides raw skill especially in the digital medium, layer blending modes, color correction, brushes, freaking filters, etc. Chances are you're gonna struggle a lot if you're not aware how some stuff just work, like digital drawing software have so much tools and they can have a lot of interactions with other tools. Like I remember watching a rendering tutorial and they put it all under a multiply layer and put a lighting layer on top and this sounds obvious but it wasnt obvious for me😂

"Nah I wanna be like YOU-" is my response naturally-mentally... but it feels so weird to draw out of said style. Main difference between them and me is the fact I still draw in Paint, maybe medibang if I want to be fancy, but Paint has been my go to since I started drawing digitally. I study but I can't do that stuff in my art programs of choice and I really don't want to learn a new one since I'm not an "Artist-artist" if that make sense lol. When I turn my brain off and just draw I find I make characters really dynamic and expressive. I tend to make their eyes and mouths absolutely massive but with just small black pupils like a mix between anime and cartoon. But if I just do that all the time my characters end up all looking the same so I like to mix things up with different styles of facial features. Which makes it easy to differentiate them by their face which I think is cool. Sometimes I see a way an artist does something so I just put that In one of my characters instead of making it my whole deal

I really liked one piece and code geass characters.. One piece characters how the shapes are exaggerated and simplified.. Code geass with the gorgeous long proportions plust the vibe and facial features.. also the way clothes are drawn there are mostly composed with edges and triangles making it so aggressive to look at.

I drew girls for majority of my art journey but I didn’t study them really. And then I started studying how to draw guys, and now I have a way better understanding on how to draw guys to the point where my girl drawings just aren’t up to par with my male anatomy/facial knowledge.

I don't know what secret are you talking but I have personally found my own art style for the game I'm working with out following eny guide The game I'm working it's have old school esthetic mixed with staiylize. The reason I and up have this art style for my game it's the following 1. Most of 3D models for my game it not high poly and it's mixed between flat and smooth shading. 2. as for the texture's most the texture for my drowning by myself or are convert from phtose with filter to look my like drowning. My game mode on peruse to look like older game, However my game have dail texture's also the reason I have disait to make my game texture to be like drowning it's in the order to able to drowning my own texture if want to with out field out of place. As for why this game's game mode in the order to look like older game is for multiple reasons, 1. Nostalgia I'm trying to getting people that have Nostalgia for older games to play my game. 2. Because my game made in the order to look like older game wean I add model's with not much polygons looks great. One last thing my game it may look like older game many way's but the game I'm working have a lot of details on 3D models and texture's not every 3D model or texture but those texture or model's that matters. What I'm trying to said it's the art style for my game have become neutral, And the wail my game trying to look how people remember those older games not how those games actually are.

Is it weird for having 2 types of Art styles? Because I somehow managed to obtain 2 for some reason. I can do a lot of details if I draw on phones (app to be more specific) but when I touched a paper, the art style change and it becomes more simplistic and looked more cartoonich or like an anime. But the thing is that I can do shadowing very good on the app, it's like I have two sides 😂 Can someone help me with this? Edit: And also, another fun fact. I can't draw anatomy, how do I draw character then? Imagination... 😅
