The secret to Frank Klausz’s magical dovetail saw

If you’ve ever seen Frank Klausz’s videos where he does dovetails, you’ve seen him use his “magical” frame saw - where the blade changes direction. This very short amateur video shows you how to make one for yourself. In it I demonstrate this technique using both a standard coping saw and a Rob Cosman modified fret saw. By the way Rob sells this saw on his website. Hope you can add this trick to your woodworking repertoire.

The blade that Frank uses had been manufactured decades ago for a long time in a factory in Hungary, where he came from. He purchased those blades there, when he visited Hungary occasionally. Those blades are not manufactured any more as I know, but it can be seen in Hungarian woodworking books. That blade has a direction change in the center, it is forged this way, that the two halves are 90 degree to each other.

what makes Frank's saw different is that his blade is forged with a bend in the teeth, not just a turn in the blade. his blade has no teeth facing in any direction except perpendicular to the front third of the blade. they slowly grow in thickness as it approaches the hand. these type of blades are no longer produced besides maybe by order to a metalworker

The thing is Frank's saw was for making shipping containers, so it had to be a large bowsaw, with a wide blade, and therefore there had to be a transition section in the blade to work it around the corner. If you are using a coarse fret saw you can blow Mike's kink through the wood, or at least soft wood. I am going to try Mike's method because it looks like fun! But there is the question of what it is good for? Because it won't be as good at making a clean as a chisel. So then one is into the whole fretsaw nonsense where one removes most of the material with a fretsaw, so one can essentially pare away the waste without undercutting. And that is a beginner technique for people who haven't figured out how to chop out the waste without bruising the line, and Franz has that technique nailed, it is in his many videos. The fretsaw just makes you do the removal twice.

Hi Mike Did you create a 90degree twist in the blade with a pair of pliers or some thing?. Quite useful idea as I also use a coping saw to waste the parts in dovetails joinery

Yes, I used two pliers to twist the blade. Was worried it would snap, but I worked it gently. Try it. It is so easy.
