I can't imagine how much the Steinway B they have in their studio is worth. Guitarist gear can get cumulatively expensive, but then all it takes for pianists is pursuing one high quality grand piano... 💀

This episode inspired me to immediately sit down at a piano and spend a half hour slowly playing diminished scales in contrary motion, which necessitated developing a novel personal understanding of the scales - as the first four notes of two different ii chords a tritone apart - undoubtedly making me a slightly better player from this moment on.

OMG. I've watched a number of your episodes and absolutely love them. I had no idea you guys were in St Louis, and then when you said Peter's dad was a violist with the St Louis Symphony and his friend's father was Roger Davenport (also with the St Louis Symphony) I just about lost it! LOL. I was a PhD student at Washington University between 1983 and 1988 and studied with Robert Wykes. I had the pleasure of meeting Peter's dad on at least one occasion (a super nice guy), and saw Roger perform on several occasions (the first time I ever saw Berio's Sequenza for trombone performed live was Roger's performance in St Louis). [And, of course, I heard them both perform frequently with the Symphony back in the Slatkin days.] Anyway, I went on to teach classical composition at a university here in Texas. After retiring a few years ago, I decided I'd like to become a mediocre jazz piano and jazz trumpet player, so I've tuned into your channel and a few others and have been joyfully practicing. Sorry for the overly long post. The older I get, the smaller the music world becomes. My name's George Chave. You guys are the best!!

Playing the cycle, up and down, (inverting 5ths and 4ths) in one octave, is a great (the best?) ear and finger warm-up for improvisors and students seeking to develop their ears.

Love how Adam and Peter relates everything they teach to aspects of meditation and way of life (living meditation), which is to be in the present moment, rather than going to the mind. To connect to LOVE (true selves, pure awareness) which is already there and always will be there. Playng in the present moment as observer is just magical !! Thanks for all amazing tips about practising which I will apply. Thank you so much

One thing I observe to be a common trait of successful musicians is they have musician friends. I took ten years of piano lessons from a sweet neighborhood teacher, but only learned classical solo recital pieces that took me the full school year to learn. I didn’t learn any theory, chord progressions, or how to play with others.

This was sooo great. Having Adam grill Peter on his practice routine is priceless to me. Peter's routine with the fundamentals would be so good for me and while I think I have known this for a long time, this was inspiring for me to actually function this way. I'm actually super curious about all sorts of things now. Like how do you guys work on voicings aside from the information in the courses. Is there a routine you guys do for that? Love the longer podcast, but also love the rhythm of twice a week!

I think it's important when you guys recommend that people should transcribe, that you mention that it's not necessary to become a great musician. I studied with Mick Goodrick and he never transcribed. David Binney, Stefon Harris, and many other great jazz musicians never transcribed.

Mulgrew Miller & Aaron Parks also come to mind as rarely transcribing....but I've encountered so many great players that transcribed extensively, or I should clarify LEARNED solos, usually by ear, without actually transcribing. It's not necessary to learn solos to become a great musician, but it's likely an important piece of the puzzle for most players.

@pianopeter I think too many people in jazz education push transcribing too much and never mention the greats that never transcribed, or did very little. Jim Hall said he only transcribed two Charlie Christian solos.

@@MrThinkingahead I notice when you compare jazz musicians that transcribed a bunch to those that never did, the ones that transcribed play a lot of licks and the ones that didn't actually improvise. Mike Stern seems to play lots of licks and Mick Goodrick always had fresh ideas. Of course this isn't true in every case, but this seems to be true a lot of times.

That guy at the beginning was riding on a One Wheel. That’s what it’s called. It’s kind of like a Segway, but with one wheel and you ride it a little bit more like a skateboard. They’re pretty cool.

This is the perfect episode length for you guys. They all should be this length. The 20-25 minute episodes always feel a little bit rushed because you guys (okay only Adam lol Peter’s along for the ride) are trying to get to everything. Having a whole hour to work with loosens everything up immensely.

Tha section on the way Peter practises is one of the most useful things I’ve heard since I first got into music. Really valuable stuff. What are the key points? Maybe: practise slowly, practise technical things, practise forms and melodies rather than soloing. Is that about right?

Happy practice is a thing. And I would say those words and term it as such if they were indoctrinated as such. I like practicing especially because I’m 25 and believe I can make some really nice jazz music for my generation so I have to find new creative ways to practice
