For watercolor I was taught to work light to dark. It's harder to lighten dark colors after the dry, but easier to apply a darker hue over a lighter hue. Love the videos, I've been watching these while I get back into painting with acrylic paints again.

It's true, to get better at art, you have to grind, learn and put in the hours, repetition for sure. No click bait title, you spoke straight facts! 👊

I love that you always say that you have to put in the time and work. I think that advice has helped me a lot, because you can watch any art video but it depends on you to put in the effort and time to better whatever you’re struggling on. It’s important to fail and that was hard for me to understand. I would get scared and leave drawings halfway done and not finish, because I was scared that it would end up terrible. Hey Slew! Been watching your vids for awhile and always get excited when you post! Just wanted to say that for watercolors I think you would have an easier time working from light to dark! It's easy to get overwhelmed when you're jumping around the canvas, so focus on one area at a time! 𓆏

Very good video! I am going on 76 and have gotten a stronger interest in drawing and painting recently. Wish I had started this earlier. But, I enjoy what I have done so far and the associated work is satisfying. I am never really satisfied with the outcome, but maybe that is the way all artists are - you and others would have to answer that question. Maybe that is what keeps you trying to improve? Hopefully I will get that one piece of artwork I really love before I'm forced to stop. Enjoy your videos a lot and thanks for sharing!!!

In addition to putting in the countless hours in practicing the craft, I would suggest it is also very important to put in the hours studying why the drawings and paintings of the true masters are so good: what are their techniques, what do they emphasize and de-emphasize, how are they able to suggest light, form and space, in what ways do they convey their own personal idiosynchrasies and content?

Dude this video was amazing! It's taken me a long time to develop my attitude towards painting and drawing. I used to be so disheartened when the result wasn't what I liked. It's funny though, I think you totally hit the nail on the head, if you just keep moving on to the next one it becomes much easier to focus on the process and just embrace the mistakes as important tactile experience. Hey, I watch yer videos quite regularly to help a layman, like myself, to create and I want to say that this reference of the human form is a wonderful idea, as well as yer quick practice sketching exercises. I use National Geographics magazines for reference material as well. Currently, I am drawing my annual March drawing of dolphins, I just started my reference drawing, which comes from my creative memory (for lack of a better term). My usual reference is a live study of places I go to that I find interesting. I do use a camera to "reference" my focus pictures. The problem is those special moments of candid events, very rarely are possible to capture on camera. For example, this year we traveled to 4-corners and the Grand Canyon, where we saw some incredible wildlife shots that were too late for the camera while driving across this beautiful region of America. My point is that with an artist license, I can take a picture of an animal to place in my closest reference shots to create a wonderful picture of a memory I saw with my eyes - creative memory. Very helpful video. Thanks!

With watercolor, it's usually best to go from light to dark. Also, try having two cups of water, one to clean the brush and one to re-wet it. Maybe that'll help? Idk haha

Get yourself a block of Arches 140 lb rough press watercolor paper and you'll enjoy working with watercolor a lot more. It takes pigment a lot more evenly than Strathmore and you can do quite a bit with lifting out highlights. It takes gouache really well, too.

I strongly recommend using shapes to plan out your faces. It will speed up the process. Also, try light to dark. Stop trying to use too many colors. Keep a nice contrast between your colors. If you are digitally working, try to resist the temptation to zoom in. These are techniques I have found to make my drawing in a likeness almost every time.

As someone who has spent a lot of time, perfecting the art of drawing, I prefer the experimental process best. That's where you explore the medium and subject, through imperfection. Emphasising strong lines and delicate textures, as what they come across as - rather than focusing on the exact likeness. These create the most expressive drawings, bearing some likeness to the reference image, but says more about the process of drawing.

Use more water in your watercolors, build it gently not like oils or acrylics. Blot don’t swipe when you use paper towels to remove paint or moisture. But again, use more water

Any advice for non-reference drawing? Like you have a person or animal and you don't have any pictures of what they look like from a certain angle or doing a certain motion

you need to water down your water colors a bit maybe and have two cups of water by you cause your gonna be using alot more then with acrylics or oil. usually wanna be swishing your brush in the first cup to clean after changing colors and using the second to get your brush wet again. also takes more patience as youll wanna do the colors in their own separate layers and starting much lighter then you did wait 10 min to dry go back in on places you wanna be bit darker wait 10 exc. you have to wait for the paper to dry before adding another color to avoid muddy colors and accidental blending. Thiers also techniques you can learn like wet on wet, wet on dry, using salt and other things to create cool blending or other effects you may need. works great as a multi media tho and defiently can go back in with acrylics or gauche or colored pencils to add highlights or darks if you want a more "rendered" look, as water colors are naturally more opaque but thats also what gives them their own aesthetic you could say thats better too in some cases. great video tho bro.
