The ability to focus and go into a psychological state of Deep Work is where the real edge is. You know when you are engaging in Deep Work when your thoughts are no longer wandering and your attention is in the moment and focusing on the task at hand. If you find yourself engaging in work and your mind drifts in and out of concentration, you have not achieved a state of Deep Work. Once you develop "the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task", you will attain "Superhuman Performance". These are the lessons that I have learned while on the journey to improving my mental performance.

Sharum Ki Sketchbook it’s funny, I finished a script for a video in 2 hours after meeting a girl I’m really into last weekend.. every time I thought of her I would get crazy motivated and the sentences were just flowing.. usually writing scripts for vids is such a chore so I never do it. I actually watched some past vids yesterday and it’s so cringe but I know I wouldn’t be where I am today had I not thrown myself off a cliff and learn to fly on my way down

Something I definitely noticed is that, when I'm studying something that I'm not confident in, I study a lot better. Maybe this sounds a bit counter intuitive, as in, if I'm more confident in a certain subject, shouldn't I feel more confortable reviewing everything? Well, I don't really understand it, but maybe it has to do with flow state. Studying something that I'm less confident in may increase the relative complexity of the subject and, especially if I'm working up to a big exam, increase the risk of failure if I don't study effectively. Plus, the feeling of *starting to understand*, maybe pattern recognition, just motivates me to no end, and it really feels amazing, and I can spend hours just learning, and ACTUALLY learn. On the other hand, if I'm already relatively confident, or have the impression that that would be the case, I fail to stay focused, even if I know I need to study to get a good grade, and I can't spend much time looking at the books without my mind wandering off. Not sure if this would necessarily be what this video is talking about, but it really resonated somehow.

I can relate to this. I believe we must question ourselves, 'to what extent do I really know and understand the subject in question?'. Confidence is good, but it can be self-sabotage you if you become overly confident in the level of knowledge you have, which most of the times when you actually stop to realize what you truly know or not, you come to the conclusion that maybe you don't know as much as you thought you did. This will alert you to the fact you need to know more, and pressures you of the incoming danger of failing a test or getting a low score, making you realize you really need to put in the work, it shifts your mindset. Of course, theoretically this sounds about right, in practice it's a bit harder, but it's an effort people like you and me who feel this way must make in order not to sabotage ourselves.

This happens to me as well when I'm revising something.. If I'm even slightly confident about it, I just can't concentrate for longer times. If it's difficult for me, I end up spending a lot more interest and time on it without even realising it. This could be novelty and complexity or risk considering how ill fail if I don't work.

Gonçalo there's a very simple cure to your problem: Test yourself before studying subjects you already know. BE rigorous in your correction, and you'll find out that you don't know that much. BTW the testing effect is the strongest method for increasing retention.

The “risk” trigger to flow totally explains why I procrastinate so hard because the risk of missing the deadlines focuses my abilities way better and my writing is best when I procrastinate it.

If you have ADHD, don’t be too discouraged- Our hyperfocus state is flow, and you know how strong/intense it can be. It’s just that directing our attention towards that hyperfocus and coming in & out of that state costs us a lot more mental energy than most people. (Good sleep habits, healthy eating, meditation, exercise, and knowledge about how it works are the best defenses against distractible thought patterns!)

As An Adder I rarely hyper focus unless it is something I'm very interested in. The hardest part is switching tasks.

YES exactly! I actually have to do intermediate fasting (only breakfast smoothie and dinner) because switching to and from eating consumes too much energy and time - I’d eat for 20 minutes but then take 2-3 hrs to get productive again... Things are so much better in the new setting with an added bonus of more defined abs haha

These last two videos helped me to realize what is so addictive about language learning: It is essentially a cocktail of these 5 dopamine triggers. I've now seen that a great way to start a learning session is to watch 10 minutes of a conversation or video that you already understand in the language (pattern recognition), and perhaps do that in a new place. Just doing this alone helped me to have the best 2 hour session of French that I've ever had this morning. Thanks Steven and Matt, amazing content as always.

@@petralea any practical instance of "outside your comfort zone". I know the term has been overused, but this is exactly the type of circumstance were is most useful. Go read inside a church. Deliver a free speech at a campus. Try getting new contacts/clients at the cafeteria of a WeWork. Explain your work to a toddler. Make a tutorial on something you really care about. Take a picture of yourself Rembrandt style. Wear a tie for no reason.... and last but not least, many people use smart drugs like modafinil, the inspiration for the movie Limitless.

I do the same thing when I'm writing. Its always easeir to start when I spend a little time editing what I'd already written before. Its interesting that I was tapping into the flow state by doing that. This was enlightening thank you.

May sound random, but the “Novelty” and “Unpredictability” aspect I feel are what makes my journaling on pen and paper continually exciting. Digital screens make things feel cold very quickly.

The secret is simple: Avoid distractions. Turn on flight mode (or simply turn of mobile data) and get yourself confortable with some water/tea alongside your studying material to not having an excuse to stop studying. Works for me :-)

@Matt D'Avella , i just started working at a rock climbing gym here in Canada. I quit my full time job, and made the change to part time work. I am so happy because i am working around people i like and get to rock climb everyday. I have felt flow more and more, and it's true, once you're happy the flow state is that much closer. Your videos in 2019 have helped me so much and i just wanted to wish you happy 2020 and can't wait to see your great content!

When I’m writing I edit the previous few paragraphs, and it gets me started: pattern recognition. and when get stuck, I get unstuck by switching to handwriting for a bit. Novelty. Huh! I’ve accidentally figured a bit of this out. I find this stuff so interesting. There’s nothing better than one of those days that just goes in a blink when I’m creating

This is great, I have always really enjoyed and appreciated you being so open about your life and ideas. I've been trying to create content on KZfaq related to my financial journey, but I always find myself to be the biggest obstacle. Any time I do something I always question whether or not it's good enough to put out there under my own name. Did you ever go through something similar when starting your channel, and how did you overcome it?

@Trz I guess with a good upload schedule you don't have enough time to dought yourself. You just get it done and look forward. Good advice👍 I plan to get 2 uploads in this week, then move to a full time schedule of 3 videos a week. Thank you!👍

This is an awesome video, thank you for it and for all your videos. I've been able to hit flow several times while writing music. Last week I was able to hit flow for the first time for my entire schedule-sleeping, working, eating, everything was focused and on schedule. It's good that you are encouraging people to do it. I'm personally excited to be able to try again every day!

Matt D'Vella this absolutely blew my mind! I've started changing the way I work in my business that I take 4 hours in the morning to write reports as I'm in my peak state and the afternoon to return calls, emails, talk with staff etc. I couldn't explain the exponential change this has had to not only my career but my mood as my constantly stressed state has almost completely vanished. And this video explains it all. Thank you so much for sharing.
