Three things I learned from this, 1 mix low end on another set of large monitors, 2 put a smiley face on this mix in the middle, 3 put ns 10s in mono mode to make sure the mixture is even, and a few other tweaks but this goes a long way!

I am an NS10 guy too. Cant mix without em after you have been used to. Manny is right though: their sound gives ear fatigue, hard to use for long sessions. You need other speakers as mains (Genelec 1031A in my case).

Had a vinyl party at a friend's last night. Great vintage speakers. A range of classic 70s dub and some modern tunes. We concluded the sub in modern mixes is fast getting too much. It's starting to feel like the loudness wars has now moved to sub freqs. It was distracting from all the mid range emotion

Great video T. I can't get Ns-10's, But does the HS -8 sounds exactly like the NS-10's ?
@jjeremyhaze
@jjeremyhaze Жыл бұрын
Not exactly, the HS8s have a fuller sound where the NS10s are pretty much just mids. I owned a pair of HS8s but moved on and have the NS10s.
@nebstaism
@nebstaism Жыл бұрын
Hs8 ain’t exactly like ns10 but hs8 are quite similar they are more full range so you can hear the low end better than ns10 .... I own both and I’ve noticed a lot of producers use hs8s Because they are super accurate and a balance or mix will translate very well to other speakers similar to like ns10s will..... hs8s are really good speakers..... if you’re looking for brand new ns10s the avantone cla 10s are very close to the ns10s .... I own a pair of passive cla 10s as well and they’re super close to original ns10s it’s very hard to tell the difference..... I own a few pairs of ns10’s and each pair sounds slightly different.

The HS series is Yamaha's attempt to modernize the NS series, but sadly it's a ported design, so even though it kind of has a similar tonal quality the transients don't feel like the ns-10's and the HS series is harder to integrate with your room acoustically than the NS series. The Adam T series would be better because it is an overall newer design and has more high end detail, the HS series is also very fatiguing to listen to. So simply, HS is just Yamaha trying to emulate NS-10 sound, it's not worth it.

Avantone mix cubes do a similar thing for a modern speaker IMHO

Most of the people who once used to use ns-10's now use amphions, even Mike Dean lmfao.
@ajwadakter7326
@ajwadakter7326 Жыл бұрын
Due to its time domain thing, it works great in many environments, even acoustically challenging environments, so more than the sound it's about the overall consistency. And that's exactly the same reason everyone's using amphions.
@ajwadakter7326
@ajwadakter7326 Жыл бұрын
So my simple suggestion: don't buy these if you're after detail, buy these only if you want your mixes to sound consistent. It's good to stay away from ns-10's unless you get them for a good price, it's a better idea to get amphions, because those have insane clarity + the same time domain performance that the ns-10's have to offer

The NS10s are passive monitors, so they require an external amp. Do you know the most popular amp these guys are using with them?

Yeah it seems like more of a tool for referencing rather than main monitors because of their lack of low end. I think some big 3-ways like Focals or Genelecs.

@@robertmazurowski5974 why? because NS-10 do not have the frequency response for Modern Music of today, and falls very short on Low End and Top End....this speaker was Popular in the 80s , the speaker was created in 1978 .... so why to use it today? and guys that use it today are because they got used to them of they need the validation of a speaker that was used by older and great Engineers because pretty much were not many speakers to choose from in Pro Audio... For me is important to have a speaker that puts the sound of the mix and not be guessing at the edges of the spectrum....now if you want it as a second or third reference...that is another story.. to have this speaker as a main reference for somebody new in mixing is only making your life way more complicated.
@bluematrix5001
@bluematrix5001 Жыл бұрын
@@iimmyyyy the reality is that is STUPID to mix on a pair of speakers that do not reproduce Lown End and Top end.... yeah you will learn better! ..... you just are saying it because you prob need validation because a handful of top mixers still use it...but the reality is that only a handful of mixers use NS-10 today...they can ONLY be valuable as a second reference or if you just learn to live without listening to the bottom and top end of your mix and make calculations and have fun with listening your music without that extension LOL! ....and really doubt there is a guy that ONLY references his mixes with NS-0...but there are so many and the best majority of mixers that can mix without NS-10 and only with one pair of modern speakers that reproduces pretty much the whole frequency response
