I smoke and drink a lot and used to sing a lot (and fairly well). I used to argue that smoking and drinking improved my vocals, which it did in the short term, but now my vocals are very damaged as a result. And while I don’t want to dis Freddie, he did often sing an octave lower when singing live

Quite right, plus he only lived to be 45 - who knows what shape his voice would have been in at 60. No matter what, he deserves his reputation as a legend.

Freddie’s voice was insane. It’s crazy how his voice was so thick, yet had a thin, cutting aspect to it all at the same time. His voice is so smooth but it has a growl under it. It’s like he can sing the same note in two different octaves simultaneously

You're absolutely right. That's exactly what he did. Scientific studies in Germany determined that his voice had 37 different registers, which allowed him to sing like different people. That is very strange in a singer and it is one of his great differences with others.

Probably already mentioned in the comments here, but two things that make Freddie stand out even more. On the topic of his vibrato, the point with Freddie was not that he could have a faster vibrato than most singers, the truly scary part is that Freddie can overdub him self multiple times and have all his vibrato's line up exactly. Bohemian Rhapsody is the best example of that. All these overdubs are spot on and that's truly remarkable. And checking the back catalog of Queen sure makes one appreciate his voice, but to really appreciate it, just watch Queens live performances.

Possibly the only other to do this is David Bowie. If Bowie is the Starman Freddie is the Galaxy that has many thousands of stars within. I sometimes get a little misty eyed hearing "Nothing really matters to me..." along with "Anyway the wind blows". That whole song is a musical journey, filled with nuance, theatrics, great instrumentation and so many vocal overdubs. What an amazing talent. I loved his interviews too how he could at one moment be over the top and then go the opposite end of the spectrum. Hell, even his INTERVIEWS were theatrical...😁❤️

Here's the thing about Freddie. The man had some serious pipes. He had a 4 octave range and he excelled in any octave. He wrote brilliant songs. And his stage presence was only matched by Adolf Hitler. Seriously, watch them play Radio Gaga at Live Aid and then watch a video of the Nuremburg rallies. We had better thank our lucky stars Freddie didn't go into politics or he would have taken over the world. But Queen as a whole had a brilliant dynamic. It wasn't just the Freddie Mercury backup band. They all made huge creative contributions to what made Queen what it is. Yes, Freddie wrore Somebody to Love, Killer Queen, and Bohemian Rhapsody, but Brian May wrote We Will Rock You, Save Me, and Fat Bottom Girls, John Deacon wrote I Want to Break Free, Another One Bites the Dust, and You're my Best Friend, and Roger Taylor wrote Radio Gaga and It's a Kind of Magic. Other bands like Nirvana for instance were not like that. Nirvana was basically just the Kurt Cobain backup band. Queen was this perfect storm of legendary talent, and Freddie was the face of it all, the delicious cherry on top of an already delicious sundae. He was the ambassador that allowed the amazing talent of combo that was Queen to be brought into our lives. He was the prism that focused the lazer beams from the brains of Roger, Brian, and John, and amplified them until they were powerful enough to blow our minds out through our ear holes. Yes, he was the most incredible front man who ever lived, hands down.

Mr. Palyre also funny thing is with almost all their songs, they were done by one person (or at least they didn't work with Freddie) because they hated each others music styles in a way. A small 5,000 seat studio setting, (previously a wrestling auditorium) my friends and I were like 50 feet from Freddie and the guys., all glammed up, Harlequin outfits and all......we stood on our metal chairs and cheered the night away...they were great....FANTASTIC IN FACT!!.....we realised even then in that early time,...we were in the presence of greatness...and we never, never, lost that admiration for decades since. In fact the 4 friends I went to that amazing concert with all those decades ago are still alive,!!... and NOW...in our 60+ yrs we are STILL QUEEN FANS!. Freddie Forever!

Some prefer others as the greatest rock singer, but for me Freddie is easily the greatest. Combined with his showmanship on stage he is the ultimate rock performer, and the standard any other should be judged by. Live aid in 85 showed the world what happens when a great band, with great musicians and the greatest front man of all time hit the stage.

Weird huh.

@@cooIguy Freddie was well aware that his buck teeth would improve his appearance [although i think he was sleek, handsome, and what buck teeth? He would have looked gorgeous with no teeth. The reason he would not get them 'fixed' was he was scared they would harm his legendary voice range, so chose to leave as is. Unreal man -sexy as hell. Freddie was, and remains, the greatest vocalist of all-time. Others have achieved their own monumental benchmarks and each are equally gifted, but no one could command the range and harmonics across genres that Freddie so casually mastered. Personally I'm a huge fan of Freddie as well of George Michael, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Bette Midler, and many others, but none capture the epitome of musical genius like Freddie. I still miss his presence in our world to this very day; God rest his soul.

Erin E. Fortin I disagree with "greatest vocalist". Greatest Frontman or musician? That is something I can get behind, but his raw technique wasn't good enough for me personally to consider him the best Singer of all time. It was his Ability to write well-written, catchy, and unique music, His showmanship, and his unique voice that gave him a lasting effect on humanity. In terms of technique, someone like Pavarotti easily beats him. Pavarotti, however, never had the power to entertain an audience like Freddie Mercury could.
