In Today's Video topic we will delve into Bitores Mendez's past from Resident Evil 4 Remake and Explain all the atrocities he's committed that led to the downfall of his Village in Valdelobos.
Which in this video we'll talk about his his life prior to his role as a Catholic Priest, what occupation he initially had prior to his role as Village Chief in RE4 Remake, and what events that he let occur that converted him to join Los Illuminados.
We Also explains Mendez's affiliation with Osmund Saddler, Leader of Los Illuminados, what plans they had for Ashley Graham, why he was hunting for Luis Sera, and how Leon Kennedy gets entangled with all these character motives. We also explain his full devotion to the Illuminados and how he used the Plagas Parasite, which this eventually earns him the title of Chief Bitores Mendez or also known as The Big Cheese.
We also cover the different iterations of Bitores Mendez, where we see the different between his original character from Resident Evil 4 (2005) and Resident Evil 4 Remake.

The original chief wasn't a very deep character compared to his characterization in the remake, but he certainly felt more intimidating.

Now that I think about it, the fact that the village was essentially cut from the world and that Luis was born in the village gives more sense to his clothing choices in the original game. Everyone jocked about how he looked like someone from the 18th century, but it makes sense knowing that the villagers make everything themselves including clothes.

When you sit back and really confirm all that happened in that village. Its truly evil man. All those lost. Families, the children. In my opinion its pretty underrated and doesn’t get spoken of enough in later series.

Definitely, especially in the cases of the Gigantes with the new research notes you can find in-game. Basically means each giant was an infant. 🙃 Really made me feel bad after taking out the first one in the Quarry. I mean, its technically an act of mercy and its still just a video game but even so, its rough.

Definetly his negligence played a big part in the village's dowfall but I also think he was very impressionable just like the rest of the villagers. On the fights with him, both are awesome and I like the "Your tapdancing days are over" line Leon drops on him after Mendez loses his legs in the Remake.

Also considering how isolated the Village is its possible that they confused the "Madness" for some other disease and ironically insearch of cure they converted to Los illuminados. One other possibility is that the Cult Already have a substancial following and a Notable Patron (Salazar) on their side so trying to avoid bloodshed Mendez relented. And lastly Mendez may have already contracted Las Plagas a he tried to prevent its spread.

Kind of wishing we could've seen a bit more about these characters like in cutscenes of something. Always got the vibe Mendez was a bit more tragic compared to the other villains as based on some of what we find he seemed like a decent guy before the Plaga.

The real reason why they only put details lore about Villain in Notes description instead of Cutscene it's simply because this time they want you to focussed on Good side Characters like Ashley, Luis & Even Ada so instead of Leon keep making contact with Villain like in OG, now he keep contact with Luis & Ada ,, Also Both Leon & Ashley has a lot of screen time now,, the reason they doing this it's because Both Luis & Ashley In OG are forgettable Characters which is why in Remake Are focused on Good side characters instead of Main Villain

The cultists came from the castle which I know sounds like splitting hairs but I think plays a big part as to why the villagers were more trusting than they should have been. The village and castle were basically a tiny kingdom isolated from the rest of the world for generations. By all accounts the Salazar family ruled the area and while the game does not offer any details of the village's attitude towards the castle and its inhabitants there's no indication of hostility between the two so the villagers probably trusted those in the castle as authority figures. Or in short the Los Illuminados came from the castle, a place the villagers saw as an authority ruling over them and which they were already conditioned to obey. They preached about salvation, a topic already deeply culturally ingrained due to Christianity, and offered a remedy to a mysterious illness that already already claimed at least one respected member of the community. Some were suspicious, such as Mendez himself, but likely felt they could not say no to the injections without angering God and/or their lord Salazar.

One thing I always wondered was if Mendez was always as huge and strong as he is when we first meet him. Like did the Plaga do that too him or was he a giant from the start, if so I could see how the village would have so much confidence when their pillar of strength is literally as tall as a pillar.

@@Cutthroat__ it depends on what types of Las Plagas is. If that's so powerful parasite, it will make people unique and weird unlike in inside the bodies of Los Granados ("the Las Plagas") it's just ordinary parasite.

I'm confused on why they left out the Line "You're an Outsider..... unpleasant to our eyes.....severe consequences" in the remake. That line, to me explains a little bit why Mendez let Leon go and not lock him up again.

@@F30XP Yeah but there was a reason why they locked him up after he was injected. It doesn't make sense to allow Leon to roam free when he wasn't under the full control of the parasite and he could still free Ashley.

i think that maybe the reason for his nelience is due to the fact that their recent change of being more open to the outside world has only brought them good things so maybe he thought that being open to the Iluminados would be good for the village as well

They should give more of a backstory of Mendez just like how Ramon was brought into the cult because he was sick and dying. Maybe something like a bad relationship between the elder priest and Mendez after the incident of Luis' grandfather and how Salazar showed Mendez that he could control the Las Plagas to not scare away the villagers, which is a LIE of course, thus convincing Mendez to open doors for the cult.

I do wish they'd shown how Saddler actually convinced Mendez to switch from Catholicism to Las Plagas, because in both versions he seems to do so with very little resistance, if any. Very much looking forward to Krauser next as he had a lot of changes from his original appearance.

The original re4 was a slower process. While in the remake it just says the cult came in and injected everyone in the village to 'purify' their blood and souls. Personally I like the original story of how the village fell.

I think Salazar could also have had a hand in it, I'm not sure if we know the relationship between The Castle and The Village but Salazar took it as a "cure" in a sense and seeing that he was essentially fine afterwards could have led to people being tricked

@@GameparkGames apparently House Salazar is really close to the Village in both versions and the Salazars are seen as and are Nobility so its possible that in the Remake it was faster because Salazar converted 1st and the Village immediately followed especially after Ramon Salazar was "cured".

I don't care who you are... if you are the religious leader of your community and you abandon your faith and immediately convert to the first set of alternate beliefs that shows up, you are really really bad at your job. As far as I know, in most cases the leader of the existing religion is the last one to let go of the old ideas and beliefs, not the first.

This what I first thought when I played the original game. Saddler used the villagers religious faith and twisted it to his advantage or suitability. The people in the village including the Mendez were all good people. So, yes they were victims or hostages (death was only way to be free --mind control) to Saddlers nefarious plans. Forgot to mention, I think also the true victims were the villagers own children. They are none to found.

This is a great analysis. Hoping for a Saddler one soon. Based on the notes in the remake, it would seem that the Saddler family line is traced back on the island for at least 15 generations. So Saddler is not just some outsider but may actually be directly related to a family member who lead the Los Illuminados cult centuries prior, perhaps even when Salazar’s descendant disbanded the group and sealed the Plagas. It would seem that Saddler is actually on a quest for revenge against the Salazar family by manipulating Ramon Salazar to get back at his ancestor from the past.

5:14 Yup definitely Luis. “He told me a story of a Knight who rides a donkey again today.” The story the boy is talking about is Don Quixote. Luis makes reference to Don Quixote several times during the game. Calling Leon “Sancho” who was Don Quixote’s squire. As well as his “lance.” So apparently Luis loved Don Quixote even as a child. Seeing as he kept telling the story several times to both Mendez as a child and Leon as an adult.

For me, Mendez was done PERFECTLY in the remake. They updated him subtly but still kept the general feel the same, unlike with Salazar. I wish they would go into the lore even more with these remake games: they give you breadcrumbs, but I want encyclopedias. 😂. Also: I didn’t realize that Luis was the boy from the pictures. I can’t wait for an updated Luis video explaining. 🤘

I actually feel Salazar kept the same personality and, as Méndez, he was more fleshed out. My only gripe is that he didn't get as much screentime or dialogue, Salazar's VA did an amazing job and I wish we could've seen more.

Mendez may have been forced to take the injection then slowly fallen under saddlers control, not like he would have been able to stop them despite being big they had plagas power

I have a headcanon as to the timeline of Conversion for the Remake and to possibly some extent in the OG Stage 1: the "Madness" spreads to the Village, the Chiefs try to contain it but have no idea what it is being so isolated (they possibly suspected it was the age old parasite but either/both don't know of its symptoms or/nor its connections with the Los Illuminados), at this point Salazar has yet to convert as well and being a Consrvative, Amish esque, Catholic Village, Sadler was not yet confident of fully converting it and he has just discovered the Las Plagas so he waits for an opening Stage 2: "The Madness" Spreads further, Salazar got sick and in despiration converted to Los Illuminados (a Psedo Christian, bioterror Cult) and is "Cured", news of this spreads as word reaches the village despirate for a cure to the "Madness" some of the Villagers startes converting to the Cult out of despiration, forsaking their Catholic faith, its here that Chief/Father Mendez is contacted by the Cult but is hesitant. Stage 3: Conversion grows amogst the Village with a few hold outs the Cult finally arrives with Sadler and possibly Salazar and out of despiration and unwitingly Chief Mendez bends the knee and converts, much of the hardliners later followed and those that resisted were forcefully innoculated.

I also surmised that the photo was of Luis and his grandfather (because of all the contextual clues), but Luis was born in 1976 which means the photo was taken in the early 80s, so why do they look like people from the early 1900s? Is the implication just that the people of this region are just really old-fashioned and sorta frozen in time like the Amish or something?

They were very isolated. They only started opening up to outsiders somewhere around late 80s/early 90s as mentioned in a document talking about the quarry/mines which finished construction in the early 90s. I think the document is in Mendez's house either in the attic (Need Ashley) or in his bedroom and speaking of the attic, its pretty much used as a room to develop photos and you find an antique camera in there that you can sell to the merchant and a photo of a priest that may or may not be Mendez before infection.

This is kind of random but I watch your videos all the time on Resident Evil & I just wanted to thank you for doing such a thorough and comprehensive job on covering the lore. I have severe dyscalculia which pretty much makes playing games like Resident Evil unpleasantly difficult / inaccessible as hell for me. I remember when the remake was fist announced, there were rumors that Chief Mendez was gonna have a role similar to Mr X and Nemesis where he stalks you around the village before the main showdown you have with him. That would have been awesome.

This game is fire, I always had a good theory about the chief, taking the las plagus , Maybe he saw the incoming cult ( los illuminatos )coming in and basically making all of his followers been to the there will so maybe hearing about the parasite, he took it so that he could possibly give his people a fighting chance, and maybe we would’ve seen him go up against Salazar‘s right hand vergous- which would be really cool because Chief reminds me of Mr. X meets the thing, and that other creature is downright freaky, it’s just interesting to think about

You know I kind of wonder if chief Mendez wasn't the first villager infected? In the remake if I recall correctly outsiders were used to excavate the caves so it is possible that he Los Illuminados already had a few plagas samples before even approaching the village itself. Now that I think about it. Luis' grandfather is hinted to have died due to the plagas years before the downfall of the village. But how would that have been possible if the plagas was still sealed under the Salazar castle? So what if the timeline is. 1. Los Illuminados come to the village and convince Ramon Salazar that his family has sinned and that the Plagas must be freed and worshiped. 2. The excavation is carried out by people who were originally from outside the village and these people are infected giving the cult samples to experiment with. 3. After some development of the plagas the chief Mendez is infected with a dominant strand so while he still has some free will and rational thinking he is ultimately under the control of Lord Sadler. If there aren't any faults with this theory then it would make complete sense how he would have helped Sadler convince the villagers to be injected with the plagas.

In our mind there's a lovely parallel where Operation Baker V Plagas happens; in which the Baker family fully infected is dropped just outside the village and has to fight off the village and chief Mendez eventually throughout the night. Timelines would make no sense in this parallel but it's an amazing thought lol 😂

In the origional he felt way scarier to me, I found him terrifying and his lack of dialogue only added to the fear for me, seeing him transform for the first time and the eerie music made it both one if my favorite fights and a very creepy one, I like that he has depth and story in the remake and I think he was done very well, however I may not find him as scary only because Ive played so much resident evil now as opposed to then and didnt know what to expect, who knows, maybe bew players playing for the first time find him as scary as I once did.

The big problem with Capcom and Resident evil remakes is that we need more and longer cutscenes so that the characters develop more. I think Capcom is a little bit lazy with the cutscenes

What I'd like to know is how did Saddler become infected. Since according to lore the Las Plagas is buried deep beneath the castle. Like did he already know about it somehow and did he know if there was like a king or queen Lad Plagas that would make him the leader or what?

3:43 that is Méndez' predecessor indeed, he is the 'old man' referenced in one of the notes, the one who entrusts Méndez with caring for the village. I also thought he was a Catholic priest, but look at his medallion, it has the same emblem as the Church seal and this makes me believe that the old man was already letting the Iluminados get to the people, and entrusted Méndez with the task of completing the people's conversion. I do believe Christianity was long gone from the Village, even from before that original leader.

That was on Mendez. Forget resisting if nothing else he didn't even question Saddler's faith. I'll cut him some slack though. He was in charge of a isolated village that were finally happy to extend their homes to visitors and was unaware of the outside world's malice. The blame doesn't solely fall on him though.

I think maybe the reason why he let Los Illuminados in was that when he opened the village to the outside world only good things happened. The motor boats, the fishery, the ironworks, and better education for the children. Even though he may have been doubtful of Los Illuminados. He may also have hoped it could've been a good thing for his people, but of course by then it was too late. If he could have foreseen the future maybe he would not have been so idle.

I want to ask if somehow the villages from 4 and 8 have any small connections between one another? I ask as both seem to strive from an aincent living parasite, both cultivating a strong following and both parasites have emmence power with a head of it all (Saddler and Meranda)? But we basically mercy kill them. U can't remove the plaga when they are fully devolped /grown and i think being trapped in ur own body and being used as a puppet is a fate worse than death

Doesn't really matter, during the escape all the militias are seizing on the ground because Saddler is dead. Samething will happen to them
