Esben Jessen is captain of the "Ottar" - a replica of a Viking freight ship found in Roskilde, Denmark. In 2018 I had the chance for an interview for my movie trilogy "The Viking Route", which is available here on my KZfaq channel. Esben shared with me all the secrets of navigating by all means of nature using currents, wavepatterns, clouds, birds, whales or even smells. This might become useful for sailors sometimes even in our modern times of GPS.

🎩Hi, I learned that in conjunction with the sunstone you use a horizon board. So if you know the rough date you can then find north.

Hi Robert, that is right. I even tried to build my own one, and it works nice. If you like, take a look at my movie trilogy "The Viking Route" in this playlist kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h6dynJqk0s3XgZs.html Near the end of part two I will show and explain the board. Best regards Claus

There's one secret this video doesn't touch on, and it's probably the most important one: How did they know their latitude? Almost all the videos and articles I've read focused on how they might have determined compass directions, but it doesn't matter how accurate your compass is if the wind and currents are taking you away from your intended latitude -- you could easily sail right past Iceland or Greenland, even if the boat was pointed exactly due west the entire time. That likely sometimes happened, but they must have had some way of being close most of the time. I saw one video that talked about a cork floating in a bucket of water with a vertical pointer and a circle that show the shortest shadow at noon if they were on the intended latitude, but that just doesn't seem to be nearly accurate enough.

Very interesting! Truly our brains are fantastic to tackle such challenges and incorporate our various senses to achieve our goals. Google says that scientists estimate our brains can hold 4.7 billion books worth of information! If we are the product of evolution, which reportedly only grows to meet a need, what need could there be for a brain with such an amazing storage capacity? However, if we were meant to live forever, as the Bible teaches, a brain with unlimited storage would be a must. Romans 5:12, Psalm 37:29 I welcome your thoughts. Thank you again for the interesting information.

Hey Ron, thanks for giving your thoughts. I am far from being an expert in evolution or the human brain, but I like to add some thoughts: I am not sure of measuring brain capacity, but if a book is written in letters and we are remembering in sequences of pictures, sounds and even smells maybe this eats up more ressources in our brain. for myself, I am very often thrilled of how much stuff I can actively recall. Sure enough mankind could need more use of logic thinking, empathy and less egoism, to make the world livable for the next 100 years. Maybe evolution cannot only be measured in storage capacity then. As for eternal life, it might not be in our given bodies, as they tend to rot even with some genetic updates, I guess. So maybe our brain is just big enough to invent a next generation storage for all our memories, or the whole concept of life is much more complicated then we will ever realize in this life...which I tend to think. All my best Claus
