This is brilliant advice! As an adult beginner I realise I’ve been reading note by note rather than by recognising patterns. Also I was reluctant to try new sheet music until my usual repertoire was highly practiced. I’ve found it’s so motivating and a lot of fun to explore new scores to practice sight reading and now I’ll do so without hesitation. Thanks so much!

I came back to this video after a year of noodling around. And having not practiced sight reading as I should have. And I started with a real live teacher. I was very humbled the first two lessons, but then he threw the C Major Prélude in front of me. It wasn't the sheet where I had written the note names, I had to actually read the staff. Over the next two weeks, I'd say that my sightreading skills improved about 2%, but my piano playing improved 20%. Gee, putting in the time on sightreading really is the most important skill.

I'm from the jazz idiom.... You are wonderful.. when I was young I started to sight read but couldn't afford to keep up with music lessons.. I do remember my teacher taught it in the same way that you do... Your video is so helpful.. I not only play piano I play saxophone and you've helped me tremendously... A great teacher is a great teacher not matter the musical genre...

EXCELLENT... overview and description of the process... well worth the time to watch and learn. I do like the idea of noting the key signature and actually doing that scale... and I'd add doing the arpeggios for that scale as well. All the VERY BEST!

I just had the light bulb moment this year where I realized all I need to do is notice patterns instead of reading every single notes. Now I think of the first note in the measure as an anchor and base everything around that!

I sing with a symphony chorus. This tutorial was great. Interestingly, the tips I have learned by trial and error in sight reading for vocalists over many years, are the same! Your advice to keep going resonates with me as my piano tutor urges me to keep going and make it sound musical. The Czerny tuition book helps with learning the notes and to keep going, so I am going to go back to my ABRSM level 1 book at sight reading and have a go with that each day.

This is probably the best info I've gotten on reading as a beginner reader for bass clef. I used to play the trumpet but need skills in bass clef on the staff. You seem like a great teacher. Where are you and do you give classes.

Sight-reading new pieces all the time definitely. Some teachers put a heavy emphasis on reading. Ear training is also important. A good reader who relies on the sheet may play in a mechanical way. A good listener would be able to play more expressively and pick out wrong notes by ear. Many people would practice at a slow tempo. They get to a certain speed that would still allow them to play accurately. The end of the day is to aim to play pieces at an appropriate tempo. An allegro should be at least 120bpm instead of 70 sounding like Andante. A piece may have sharps / flats in the key signature as well as accidentals next to the notes. It's debatable which is easier to read. Some people like myself find sharps & flats next to the notes easier. If a sharp such as F is in the key signature, you have to remember every time you encounter an F it's supposed to be a sharp. By the time you get to a piece with 4 or more sharps or flats, your reading can be significantly slower putting sharps or flats in the key signature on the notes vs if the sharps & flats are written next to them.

after 5years of taking pianolessons sightreading, or just reading notes as you play still seems to me like it shouldn't even be possible to take in all that information for both LH and RH and fingering and dynamics and still being able to play. i mean, you must be some kind of super human to pull that of. still i will continue to try and make it work for me. i can't believe i should read out each note as i'm playing. your system of steps, skips and leaps sounds so much more manageble to me. so thank you so much for your video, i'll come back to it. i can tell you are a very good teacher

Good pointers. One other important aspect - what kind of pieces should one be sight-reading? Simple and slow - not challenging enough after a while. Hymns - ahem, can get boring. Pieces just for sight-reading - I can't resist the temptation to sight read pieces I might want to learn. Contemporary classical - hard to know whether you're playing the piece right at all.

Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question: when sight reading, you can't foresee what is coming next, so how to make sure to have the right (or preferred) fingering? For example, the last note F in Bar 2, the marked preferred fingering is 2 (index finger), but when sight reading to that point @7:28, you pressed the F key with finger 1 (thumb). This is just one example, but there are many cases one will not be playing with the finger that one would have pre-marked. If you are going to do a sight reading a second time over of the same piece, you may use a different set of fingerings and so can't have muscle memory. How to deal with this problem?

Yes, it's true. As you are sight reading, your fingerings may be fluid but the more you play, the more your fingers develop the dexterity to adapt on sight. But yes, a scan and analysis before you begin to play, will definitely help.

I hear ya. But I would encourage you to try to keep going straight through the first time so you train your eyes and fingers to find their way. Then go back and fix whatever needs to be fixed.

This is all sounds good but if you write down everything you say to do for the analysis, you aren't really sight reading anymore. Sightreading and playing requires a lot of inborn talent and eye-hand coordination before practice will ever have an impact. You also have to start young and develop those abilities. Most people don't have what it takes and the older one gets, the worse it will be. Yes, someone may be able to mug up an easy Clementi sonata but the real piano repertoire? Forget it.
