Loving mine so far. The Model 1 Mini had better overall games but I like the sound and screen options on the Mini 2. M2 did another excellent job. I’m really happy I went ahead and picked one up.

I am still waiting on mine, i am not sure if i liked the mini 1 console, but i think i'll like the mini 2 due to more games, but i'll wait and see when i get them, hopefully later today or tomorrow.

agreed. Kinda annoyed they put in the worse Vectorman 2 over the original, but this seems to be a really good machine. M2 always does the best job with emulation.

Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Ranger X, Gain Ground….. the games play awesome. Sega and M2 did a fantastic job on this.

Shadow Dancer being on here puts the list over the top imo. It's a list of underrated gems and second look classics with some funny crazy stuff thrown in. The games list doesn't have the recognition, but it has the quality when you dig in.

@Brian Babin Amazon Japan had them for pre-order along with the Medga Drive months ago for around £40 shipped. I think it might be difficult to find stock now as they tend to get bought up and scalped like the addon for the first mini.

The only two things, design-wise, that disappointed me when I tried mine out: The sliding instead of push-button power switch, and the lack of power LED. I agree that some of the backgrounds are pretty stupid and don't really fit as a border... the only ones I'll likely ever use besides black are the TV-looking one and the purple one (because it doesn't look too horribly cut off or out of place around games). Many of them just pop out too much and take away from what you're playing, and get so much cut off from the game display that you're right--they'd be better off on your computer's desktop. I recall the original Genesis Mini had some equally crappy "borders." Game selection is... okay. There's a lot there. I get it by now that the original Sonic 3&K is lost to time, but I wish it had Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure. I loved that game.

They did a copy/paste of the Japanese Mega Drive case and design, with slide power button and no LED. This is why I got that one instead and I am still on the fence if I should get the EU one as well. I would have expected them to do a 1:1 mini clone of the original system, just like they did with Model 1, but no, they cheaped out.

@@alexandruc.5647 Yep. I still like the system though, but it could have been so much better if they showed the same love and care that they did with the original Genesis Mini. I mean, honestly--I don't care if the CD expansion port cover is removable or not. They could've easily left that part out, the power button/switch and LED are what I actually *see* and experience with regular use of the console.

"Is it worth it?" Since I waited for the review and it sold out already, no. It's worth $700 or whatever the scalper tried to jizz out. The fact that Sega included a power brick and didn't cheap out is a reason I love and respect them.

I think it's a testament to how the quality of modern games has DETERIORATED that we are so focused on older 1980's and 90's games rather than newcomers. Yeah they LOOK realistic and sound better, but the 8-bit era was SO MUCH BETTER.

One thing I noticed you didn’t mention is how you can play say Sonic CD the american version and then put in the original japanese soundtrack! I love all of those little options in this! Oh yeah, by the way this mini 2 works just like the original in that the region doesn’t matter, you get all of the games! So glad I got the japanese model! You mentioned having only one controller, I bought an extra one on amazon japan and even with shipping it was right around $100 usd for the mini 2, extra official controller and shipped to my doorstep!

Received mine yesterday. I like the games list. It’s a nice compliment to the original and has some titles that are real expensive these days in physical form. Like Splatterhouse 2 for example. I really appreciate the addition of Sega CD titles. However the FMV games like Night Trap and Sewer Shark aged horribly and are unplayable to me. They made enhancements to Space Harrier 2 so It’s a shame they didn’t clean up the video on the FMV games. I know it’s going for the original look. But it hurts my eyes/brain trying to play it. If you wanna play Night Trap, most will have to stick to the LRG version.

Phantasy Star II also received some quality of life improvements, like faster walking speed and an optional "Easy" mode to back off a bit on that ridiculous grinding that 80's/90's RPGs required.

I own the "32x/cd" version of night trap, & it has better fmv graphics that are almost as good as the 3do version. I do not understand why they did not put that version(32x/cd) of night trap instead, as it looked a lot better than the original version of night trap for the sega cd.

Loving mine, but there is one big caveat. Bare Knuckle III is missing a large chunk of content, they removed the entire dock scene in Stage 1 where Ash appears which is very disappointing.

Check your power cable again, it is Sega branded. The AC adapter also says SEGA corporation on it. The USB connection on the controller also has a SEGA brand as well. Only one that is lacking is the HDMI cable.

Just got mine yesterday, arrived a few days earlier than expected. I love it, but I'll also admit I'm a bit biased as the Sega Genesis is my all-time favorite home console. If I were picking which one is better out of the Genesis Mini 1 and 2 I'd say the first. Sonic 1-2, Streets of Rage 2, Castle of Illusion, Street Fighter II Special Champion Edition, Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps. It covered most of the great Genesis library but as somebody who was all-in on Sega back in the day, I really appreciate that the Mini 2 has some Sega CD stuff. I never played Silpheed, never owned Final Fight CD so getting those is awesome. Sonic was my favorite series back then after Streets of Rage and Sonic CD was a huge reason I begged my parents for the add on, it's one of the best Sonic games so another great addition. I only played Ecco on the Genesis so again, getting the CD versions is great, first time I'm playing Night Striker... On top of all that, this system does have some Genesis classics the first mini missed as well with Splatterhouse 2, Golden Axe 2, Streets of Rage 3, Shadow Dancer, The Revenge of Shinobi, Phantasy Star II, more Street Fighter with Super SF II and of course more ToeJam and Earl and Earthworm Jim. I don't really view this as one Genesis Mini vs. the other, as a fan of Sega, and particularly the 16-bit era of the company, I look at these as a package deal and it's got a ton of ground covered.

One of the main reasons why it isn’t as wide spread as the previous one is because of a semiconductor chip shortage, from what I heard anyway. Which sucks as it is a pretty good, but niche selection of games, and would have been great for many to play these games for their first time. Wonder if that was a similar case for the TG-16 Mini now that I think about it… My only question is, does the Japanese version have the English versions of Lunar 1, 2, and Popful Mail. If so, I may have to get that in the future. Got the US one as it has more games I can readily play without reading Kanji, and Western Minis tend to go for a lot more later in the After Market.

Having the Genesis Collection on Xbox, I like this one better, as it has more different games, and more options for them. Mini 1 was great, but I think this one is better, they were not going to include all the same games, and Mini 1 had a very decent list, but this one is pretty solid and with more variey IMO.

Sega has two more mini's in it's future that I would LOVE to see. Master System - such a small library in the US, try to get as many of the games licensed on there 32X - it would be AWESOME if Sega released a "neptune" mini that was all 32X games. again, small library, get all/most 32x games on there, throw in a few genesis games and i am sold!

Why didn't we get either of the Lunar SegaCD games or Snatcher? There are too many examples of great games that we missed out on with this new mini. We really didn't need Sewer Shark, Mansion of the Hidden Souls, or Night Trap over those three, or even Popful Mail. I don't want to spend the money right now because I don't know the hacking possibilities, but I am kind of forced to given the supposedly smaller numbers of the mini console being released. I have to think primarily about hacking it because of the games it is missing. I guess buy it and keep it sealed until it is hacked properly.

I got mine on Halloween, and I was able to play it a bit today. It’s a solid little device and the sound option with the different system model is an excellent touch. I wish that option was on the first genesis mini. I’m sure someone has commented about it but the usb power cable actually does have the sega logo on it but the your right about the hdmi cable, no logo on it. I was also surprised how small the box was, I love it lol

Noice. Already beat hellfire super hard. Loving the unit. The game does slows down a bit, overall it's playable. I grew up with the model 1 unit and no longer have it. Having this version i can safelysat the aesthetics doesn't look bad. Looking forward on testing it more completely over the weekend. Awesome video. 👌

I ordered one and since it's coming from Japan, it's going to take about a month to deliver. I really can't wait. Ristar is one of my all time fav's. I bought it when it came out. I had the Sega CD-X. Although, I hope they come out with a Sega CD mini. There were SOOOooooo many CD games I would love to play again. Yeah, you get both Echos and my favorite, Sonic CD. I especially love that they added the Japanese ROM so you get that version with the music.

❤ Although I didn’t own a Genesis growing up, several of my childhood friends did, so I got to play it many times. I’m really glad Sega has put out these mini consoles. I have the first one and really enjoy it. I wish the model 2 mini was available at retail stores, but maybe Sega thinks there isn’t enough of a demand for that. I dunno.

Love this system. I got mine over the weekend, and as a matter of fact the Micro USB cable that shipped with mine HAS the Sega logo embedded on it (in addition to the controller's USB connector)! I was really surprised to see that. Really looking forward to maximizing the potential of that added storage when this unit becomes hackable. Also I really like the 6-button controller. Is Retro-Bit doing these controllers or is it Sega themselves building them? I didn't see Retro-Bit or M.2's branding anywhere on the console or the controllers. Only Sega's, which probably means they're the ones building this hardware in-house (which is awesome).

Total agree about a virtual console, it would have been nice to buy games from a dedicated sega games shop for it. I feel too that if they have to put a couple of FMV games on it they should have gone for Ground Zero Texas and Tomcat Alley, so much bigger and better-looking videos. I have both minis and to be honest, the first one was better, the games Streets Of Rage 1 and 2, Sonic 1 and 2, Shinobi 3, Strider and of course Gunstar Heroes. Sega is asking people now what mini they want next, I'd go for a Mini Saturn.

I got mine yesterday. I really dig both the first and this one. Hard to say which one I like more, probably the second one because it has CD games and more rare games like centy. Also, I immediately noticed the stiff Dpad, I like it more than my looser 6 button Sega branded Retrobit controller with a 9 ft cable. I know the looser one is more historically accurate, but the stiff Dpad with no play or movement feels nicer.

Little info from Europe: The Mega Drive Mini 2 does not include a power brick. It's probably due to EU regulations.

No manual in the box but you can get the official scans of the game manuals for the Genesis mini 2 from Sega (I had to Google it for the link) as well as the original mini

You get a power supply with your Genesis 2mini I didn't get one with my European Megadrive2 mini!

Got the first one for $40 and I thought that was reasonable. Not dropping $100+ on this one. If they ever do a Saturn mini, I'd be down for that though.

The only reason I purchased this was for Shining Force. Pay $100 for a bunch a games on a sega branded product or pay almost triple the price for an authentic copy of shining force cd? I work too hard for the money. Mini 2 was my decision. I am playing using my retrobit sega saturn wireless controller. Makes the playing experience much better for me.
