I hope you guys enjoyed this video going over one of the most strange and unique things in my collection. This TL-K989GE MegaDrive VCD player was originally sold in China and plays Sega Genesis games off "Game VCDs" which are filled with up to 60 different games. I'm planning on making a follow-up where I try to put custom games on a disk so if you're interested, make sure to subscribe so you get notified when I upload!

I might pick one up from Japan or China just as a novelty. I actually have a surprising amount of consoles that double as karaoke machines so it would be cool to have something to go with them

Neat piece of hardware, well done for this outstanding purchase. Please, in case you're not very familiar with soldering and other similar tools, do get in contact with a proper repair person in order to re-cap those bulged capacitors and perform several other fixes and small modifications. I believe folks such as @Borderline OCD and @Voultar would be fairly interested, as they're highly familiar with vintage and precious hardware. I hope this important piece of history will preserved, and it's BIOS could be archived for the future prosperity. Keep it up!

Just out of curiosity, did any of the caps seem bulged to you? I really took a good look at them and I didn't see any that looked like they were bulging or leaking but I'm also not an expert

Hello there @@Zer064 . If I can see properly by your video , some of them seem to be replaced asap. Since it was released over 20 years ago, more than a few parts will require maintenance and support. There's a plethora of great modders in the States for that purpose, and they would love to help you. Such as by filming the whole process.

I remember playing a sega genesis demo of a pioneer laserdisc/sega cd system at an incredible universe electronic superstore back in the mid 90s, it was back when the Playstation and atari Jaguar came out

the springs and the rubber gromits are just shock absorbers, in the case that you may accidentally bump into the device, think of it as an anti skip just not a very good one lol.

So what are the limits on ROMs? I take it Virtua Racing will mot work? How about the combined Lock-on Sonic ROMs? Or some homebrew that break the standard file size limits we know?

For now, making custom disks is only really doable through cloning an existing one and swapping the roms, meaning it must be the exact same file size. There was apparently a program that generated it's own disks off a list of roms but that seems to be lost to time. all i could find are mentions of it and broken links

@@Zer064 guessing web archive did not save those links? Bummer. Sounds like a problem I have finding pre-KZfaq Satellaview fan projects from Asia. Good luck on cracking this case. Ideally I would like to see if there is anything you can parse from the ROM loading tool that could be able ported over to standard Mega Drive/CD Setups, but I imagine this vcd has internal ram for ROM loading that a normal console couldn't use with the mega CD.

You could probably modify a Master System Converter to fit it.

@@craiggilchrist4223 well it doesn't have a cartridge slot so that would be pretty tough. My thought was some type of homebrew that forces the system into its master system mode, then loads a ROM off a disk but I have no clue how to go about something like that, or even if it's possible

That disc drive looks exactly like a model 1 drive. Is it the same?

I noticed that too. I believe the mechanism is the same or atleast very close. The laser is slightly different

Does it also play Mega CD titles?Because that would seem an obvious feature in a CD-based Mega Drive.

@@Zer064 Aw, that's a damn shame. Paticularly because the Pioneer Laser Active can play Mega Drive/Genesis cartridges, Mega/Sega CD discs and weirdly, Mega LaserDisc titles. And there's an Aiwa boombox that's a portable CD Player, but will also play MegaDrive caridges and Mega-CD discs; so it's something Sega had in some of their 3rd party hybrid devices, bu sadly not this one. Actually, I'm surprised no-one's yet coded a software VCD player for the Tower of Power.That would be sweet.

Actually no, relatively modern CRTs are multiregion and support both 50 and 60hz. Like, both I own do. And those are late 1990s at best. Yours should be okay too, it looks like it's from 2000s era of transition to lcd.

For what I've read, multi region tvs are more common in Europe. I tried displaying PAL content through both composite and S-Video on mine and it's all jumbled up even though it's a 2004 model

@@Zer064Yeah, typically multiregion tvs switch formats automatically, so you're out of luck then. It's still possible that you might have to set it manually throught the on screen menu for your model.

i had a pioneer laserdisc player that could accept genesis / turbo graphics modules and some mpeg decoder but i moved a while ago and the friends that helped move me threw the unit out thinking it was just too old. needless to say i was pissed. i was in the hospital when they moved me so i didnt really have a say in it. i was in my late teens when i saw that thing in incredible universe. i saved for 6 months to get that thing it was expensive.

Some disks have Japanese games which are NTSC just like NA games so I assume it should work. I'll have to try that out in my follow up video

I've gotten my own games to run on one but I need to find the software to make a full disk of custom roms. Right now, you need to edit an existing disk image and it's really tedious and has limitations
