Experience the SEKEM story in 8 minutes: The story of how a miracle in the desert became reality brilliantly told by the great filmmaker John D. Liu. Share the SEKEM story and join our mission for a sustainable future!
About SEKEM:
With the vision of promoting sustainable development in economy, ecology, society and culture, Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish founded the SEKEM Initiative in the Egyptian desert in 1977. The SEKEM group of companies produces, processes and markets organic and biodynamic food, textiles and herbal medicines in Egypt and on international markets. SEKEM is considered the Egyptian "organic pioneer" and was awarded the "Alternative Nobel Prize" in 2003. The SEKEM companies use parts of their profits to finance the activities of the SEKEM Development Foundation (SDF), which runs among others schools and a medical centre. In 2012, the Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development opened under the umbrella of SEKEM Initiative.

This is what the world needs to heal and to stop the insanity of wars. Why should anyone engage in wars when there are so many great things to do?

Inspirational, an Egyptian did it and same must be said for Israeli kibbutzim, turning the desert into farm lands. This is way forward for humanity. Turn swords into farming tools to create harmonious environments for man and animals to live and forget the destructive effects of war and conflicts.

Did they channeled the nile river to provide water? I lack capital. If l have 50,000$ l could do a big scale 40,000 m sq. So l can only do 3200m sq now. Great inspiring project

I love it is it sustainable? I am convinced that the key to all of this is planting forests on the high areas so when the few drops of rain come they are sequestered in the roots and drip feed the lower slopes

Traditional farming communities in Korea developed a system called JADAM, which has been proven to be used to make the land more alive. Namely maximizing the use of plants that have certain ingredients that are adapted to local conditions, livestock manure, mineral salt water, and other materials that are easily available nearby, then connected and integrated with the food chain system between plants, animals and humans, including the use of microorganisms. . I have started applying it to several areas of land that have been damaged, because the humus has been lost due to mining activities on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia, where the condition of the soil is very similar to the condition of dry desert soil and is almost rocky. This effort is showing very good results and if this is tried to be applied on the African continent and other desert lands, it seems that it will slowly improve naturally and bring benefits that move very quickly. Greetings from me in Indonesia and it would be very good if the JADAM system which was pioneered by agricultural experts in Korea is try to implemented too, to make and organic fertilize of land. Please see this method which has been widely broadcast on many KZfaq channels, as a reference. Good luck and greetings to a healthy and green earth.

I want to put a cow shed on a stripmine in eastern Ky. I need to find other biodynamic farmers to help. Stripmines are as bad or worse than a desert... no loose sand or anything resembling dirt. Just piles of grey shale. But I think we could put logs and compost there, and biodynamic soil preparations, and get soil started.
