Heading up a ton of bookish top 10 lists for the year, The Sellout takes a different approach to examining a "post-racial" America.

Winning this year's Booker Prize (as the first non-English entry) has been the appropriate reward for an excellent book. Congratulations from Switzerland, dear Mr Beatty!

Rarely do awards tend to my preference but this one was my favourite to win. Congrats to Mr. Beatty indeed!

I just read the Sellout and agree with your very concise, well presented review. I agree that it will not be a lot of people's cup of tea. The Sellout is a very intelligently written with lots of witty asides. Many that went over my head. I do not encounter racism so for me lots of the points are interesting rather than "experienced' (sic). I expect people who live with racism will most likely get more out of the book. It's very funny. It's unreal but that doesn't matter. A thought provoking read about racism. I rate it 4.5 stars as when I finished the book I felt that I would definitely reread this book and that I was unlikely to forget it.

You’re right about it not being everyone’s cup of tea - now that it’s appeared on the Man Booker shortlist it’s being discussed a lot more and opinions are certainly conflicted. Thanks for the compliments - I really did enjoy this book!

+1book1review Books! Though I get the sense I'm not a real power-user when it comes to Goodreads as I only use it to track books read. I don't have a TBR shelf, avoid tracking DNFs or monitor individual book progress. I can't even read reviews of any kind until after I've read the book.

ThePoptimist mainly how I use it. I added all the books I owned at the point of joining goodreads and now just add books to my currently reading shelve when I start them and there they stay until I finish them or consciously decide to dnf (hardly ever). I never read reviews, but I can look for books I heard people talk about months later on their shelves or when I look for new ideas. But never as often as I wish I did.

English is not my native tounge, so I am struggling heavily with this book. I can see that it is outstanding, but most of the time i just don't understand what's going on. Any advice on how to read a book like this ?
@ThePoptimist

I commend you on tackling this with English as a second language. I don't know what to say to ease the read though as it's filled with slang and would prove a challenge. May not be an ideal read as it's so entrenched in the language.

ThePoptimist thank you for your comment! I am currently listening to the audiobook ( and concurrently reading also ) and I totally get the "beat" of the language you are talking about in your superb review.

Gezim Idrizi I don’t thing it has to do with the difficulty of the language as it is with the amount of references to American pop-culture, historical and political events and people in the book. If you want to appreciate the book and especially its satirical tone you might want to brush on some of the references in the book.

I'm a little embarrassed that it is only today, through a Twitter trend, that I've discovered this incredible poet-writer. My head will be slightly bowed in shame when next I visit my local, public library, but appreciate fate along the way. Thank you for your synopsis of "The Sellout," (which an allotted portion was available on Amazon.com) and for this post.

Due to your stellar review of 'The Sellout'; I'm considering reading it. It seems to align itself with the film 'Manderlay' A rural Alabama plantation wherein slavery persists, roughly 70 years after the American Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. www.rogerebert.com/reviews/manderlay-2006

Fantastic read but satirically funny which can be a bit hit or miss for readers. Will have to check out Manderlay though - thanks!

ThePoptimist I'm wondering will the satire be 'race does matter'; even though 'multiculturalism' is a lovely word on the tongue, the lack of 'respect of differences' in societies remain. I'll post you after I read it. I sure you, 'Manderlay' will fuel thought and conversation. p.s. refrain from reading and/or watching trailers etc. Just sit uninterrupted :)

Paul Beatty did NOT "drop out". He has a degree in Psychology.

I know. How could he have gotten an MFA if he would have dropped out? He must have his undergraduate degree in Psychology and then his MFA.

Sorry, I guess I should have chosen my words better - especially with the connotations drop out has. He has his Masters in Psych but left before completing his doctorate.

ThePoptimist: "connotations"?? How about the simple definition of "dropout"? It's an insult and it's FALSE. Do you know if he even began working on a doctorate? Even if he had, he has two advanced degrees. He finished college. He is not a dropout in any sense.

Paul Beatty should write Black Vulcan DC Comics movies and comic book. Actually, I have the complete 500 Million dollar ticket selling Black Vulcan story if Paul Beatty asked for it from me in person. No Joke, I'm dead serious.
