Snow lay trackside as Ayrton Senna began his first exploratory laps with the new Williams FW16-Renault. And up on the Silverstone pit wall LAT's Charles Coates caught this dramatic moment in time as Ayrton grounded the car over a bump. Charles in this video recalls that moment; his growing friendship with Ayrton; Ayrton's photographic tips; and what Ayrton did for Charles' Mum and Dad.

Thinking about the loss of Senna will always upset me as he was the ultimate driver under any conditions. Why his steering column broke, at top speed, during the race & why the wheel bounced on his head & broke his neck just proves that 'life's a journey' and that we must 'enjoy the ride'. Senna was not perfect but he is and always will be a legend.

Was living in Brazil when Senna burst onto the F1 scene and F1 was still huge there. So much emotion when he raced! Later, back in the USA, I was watching on TV when Senna passed. It brought me to tears and still can at times. Last time we were in Sao Paulo I visited his grave. I think he was so much larger than life that his death racing was a huge shock to us all, but most of all to everyone who had experienced the adoration that he had in Brazil. Terrible weekend with the loss of Ratzenberger too.

I’ve never seen any pilots as committed as Ayrton ! Win or die for what you wish for... Such talented racing driver never yet equaled. I cried like a baby the day he left us at Imola, and knew he had left us as he was still in the car when his head flicked. So sad even today thinking about it RIP rain master !

My wife and I were in the Tribune Verde behind Tosa that day. How we got there is a story way to long to tell here. The condensed version? SF to Paris. Paris to Milan by train. Milan to Bologna by train. Bologna to Imola by train. Bus to the circuit. Fabulous day in a grandstand full of Tifosi. And the crash happened right in front of us. We had to walk back to the train station. I have no idea how many Italians were in that procession. You could have heard a pin drop.

I’m the lucky guy who’s been going to motor races since I was 11 in Texas. Senna’s crash was a long way from the worst I’ve seen. I fully expected to see him climb out, wave to the crowd and climb into the medical car for a routine checkup.

Very good video, Ayrton wasn’t always the easiest guy to get on with but if your made to be a brilliant human being as he was you have to push people in your circle very hard to get the best from them because they will be normal, this way brings great results but it’s never going to make you popular.

A video with Dave Brown comparing setup styles of Mansell, Prost, Senna and Hill, Patrese would be amazing! Roll stiffnesses, car balance, preferred tyre pressures, cambers etc. What kind of damping they liked, rack and pinion gear ratios, etc. How Prost setup his passive FW15D in Estoril and ended up fastest in late 93! Gotta be a story there ! Patrick said they each had their own ideas on car development.

Awesome comment mate. Can I ask, how old are you and how long have you been watching F1?

@@mac3490 I am 37 from Canada and did not get to watch GP's full time from 2005 when I was able to view it on basic cable. I am absolutely enamored with F1 in the 1990's when I saw as a kid the famous yellow helmut in the John Player Special Lotus in a local library book. When in Europe in 1995 my uncle mentioned he did not want to miss a race and that was the first time I heard the name Schumacher. After see Jacques Villneuve in the news for the 97 title win and playing the first generation Playstation F1 racing games I got more and more hooked. I love tech and bits of mechanical kit. I got the bug. Now I am obessed with racing and aero and engines tires and springs and damping. I buy old Autosport and Race car Engineering mags on ebay, etc. Saw the 2003 Canadian GP with Schumi won with poor brakes. Saw the 2004 Canadian grand prix, Spa and Brazil and from 2005 basically have not missed a race. I love the 90's car from an artistic point of view and much more simplicity before mega manufacturing and big data and tech. I love all that too, but I childhood hero's at a younger impressionable age. We are all wedded to our own perceptions of things. Great stuff, I love it all. F1 can be taken at multiple levels, from average fan to amateur enthusiast to working it. My first ever GP was the 2019 Hungaroring and that was an amazing race to see, given it was the first time I attended a GP. I met Christian Horner and Helmut Marko on the streets of Budapest the night before and I was so enthused and pumped !!!!

@@peterb8387 thanks for your reply man, much appreciated, yeah I too have a good memory when it comes to races, I live in the UK and attended the Belgian GP in 2013 (the last yr of the proper engines) and the Italian GP in 2014 (shit engines). But yeah I too would be really interested in the aspects you mention such as set up styles of the various great historic drivers. I’m 41 and started watching F1 when I was 13 in 1993. Your analysis and outline above was really insightful and thoughtful.

Geezus, FAKE NEWS! I am not talking about Peter's work thru the decades... which has been one of the few Journalists who has always shown impartiality and professionalism. I am talking about what I am reading here, the people posting messages trying to praise Ayrton... that is the problem. I read two and I was actually hearing bad opinions of Ayrton from 1989, and then 1992... bad terrible press speaking ill and slander about one the best drivers in Motorsport. "Win or die", as if he had "a death wish", both spoken by Prost and that nonsensical fat French person in charge during the late 80's, whom nobody should remember. The press put words in Senna's mouth, called him a fanatic and a zealot just for practicing Catholicism differently. "The deity wants me to win", by logic it is not a fallacy other than the deity existing or not. But even then the media and drivers when for the yugular... pathetic. I see the same kind of issues with almost all no European drivers, Checo Perez the latest with what I fear was racism from Hulk and Esteban Ocon... never Hamilton, always the rest... but nobody does the investigation, I wonder why. Stop the media nonsense... and Peter thank you for your work, even in your mistakes there is the stuff of legends you bring to our eyes.
