I am an atheist and one of my dearest friends is a retired Canon Reverend Anglican Priest. We have had many a lively discussion of religion(s) and the only thing we have killed together is a bottle of wine. I love him as a humanist, who truly does follow the teachings of Jesus and I respect him regardless of how he got there. I know that it is through his belief in the teachings of Jesus, that he loves and respects me as an atheist humanitarian. When you take away the man made fabrications of religions and follow the teachings of Christ, there is no conflicts between a man of God and an atheist.

There are many many people who have our humanity and never heard of Jesus or a god. I didn't need to read a two thousand year old story to learn to love my neighbor regardless of color or culture. It came naturally intuitively to me and many others. Question, my cousin a lifelong bible thumper, had never heard that jesus threatens people with torture forever for not believing in him. Apparently pastors never have their flocks turn to that page. How could that be? Maybe you can ask your friend?

This is so good. I got saved and baptized because of the words in red. I have since felt cheated because I don't see many of the group following that advice. John makes so many of the points I try to make to others who just will not listen. They want to claim they are worried about other people's souls. They need to worry about their own.
@mightymystery92046 ай бұрын
"The words in red." That is the solid distinction between a genuine charismatic evangelical, like Jimmy Carter, and a proselytizing evilgelical, like Jerry Fall-well. The fundamentalist reads the Old Testament laws, and the letters of Paul. He only quotes Jesus in two places. "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. Nobody comes to the Father but by Me," and "I am the Resurrection and the Life. He who believes in Me will never die." But the quote is misused. Jesus meant, live via His path (the _way;_ _by_ me). The fundamentalist treats it like a gate guarded by a bouncer: you have to get by me. The context and impact are wrong. It says a lot that Paul, who never met Jesus, broke from Peter, whon Jesus taught, because Paul claimed Peter was not following the will of Jesus! There are actually extremist Paul followers who say Peter betrayed Jesus and is not to be followed. Peter got on his knees and called himself a sinner, when Jesus picked him. Peter wept after deserting Jesus. Jesus forgave him, reasserted his mission, and sent the Holy Spirit into Peter, who ministered in person, not by letters, just as Jesus did. The biggest thing lacking in fundamentalists is, humility. Jesus had it, Peter had it, Moses did not, Paul did not. I remembet Billy Graham being always humble, and I remember him doing a spot on Johnny Cash's show. Every line he said began with "Jesus said..." and that was his morivation. He preached the Gospel. Many "Bible-teaching" people like Jerry Falwell hardly have a word about Jesus. They dwell in old law and in Paul--who was a pharisee! Jesus said, peoplr sin because of the law. I thought it meant you will slip and break rules if there are many. But now, I see what He meant, that people begin to think they control the law, and not Jesus. It is a shame. If they would just read the red words, they would wake up. But Paul and Leviticus supports their view, so they stay blind and deaf. They tithe, but have no love.
@andrewmantle76276 ай бұрын
I think the whole 50's and 60's thing came from kids who were told young that the red words were actually Jesus speaking, so we read them. Children still feel the spirit and hear Jesus' words ring in their heart. The division that resulted wasn't them' it was the fear of their parents in their reaction to the awakening that was only visible to them in the commercial manifestations and media. More to come.

This, minus the punch lines of course, is what I remember hearing from the young curates in my parish in the '50's and early '60's, and that brought tears to my eyes. In the mid-sixties, those wonderful young men were silenced, and kicked out of their parishes, by conservative Archbishop O'Boyle. Looking back, I can see that it was not that I was in the tribe, so to speak, that made me believe in the mythology, but the decency of the message. If the data is to believed, it seems that young people who have grown up with this anti-humanistic form of "Christianity" are following the same path I did, away from their churches.

@@glennhecker4422 I don’t doubt that you mean well but our experiences differ greatly. Churches openly advocate war, violence, division, bigotry and hatred. They encourage bigotry and primitive ignorance. They refer to my wife and me as “morally evil individuals”, simply because we love each other and our young daughters.Hitler was a creation of the christian church. He was strongly religious. The first treaty ever signed by nazi Germany was with the catholic church which celebrated his birthday from every pulpit until after his death. Christian churches promote and encourage the rape of innocent young children and other heinous crimes against them. For about 6 months of the year, I spend the majority of my professional life as a Crown Prosecutor, prosecuting christian clergy on charges of child rape and other heinous crimes. My first task in each trial is to have the defendant’s bail revoked, meaning that they will spend each night of their trial, secured in a prison cell, where they can destroy the lives of no more innocent children. The law disagrees with their myopic view of right and wrong and those who love to preach their superiority over the rest of us leave court in a prison van, via the cells in the basement to get acquainted with their new home. Meanwhile, the supposedly “morally evil individual” leaves court by the front steps and drives home to her family.in common with the other 10,000 or so gods, there is absolutely no evidence for the existence of your invisible sky fairy. Your bible promotes slavery and the ownership of women by men. No wonder the vast majority in my country and our neighbouring countries choose to be atheists. We much prefer to be without “ christian love”. Our young daughters understand that churches are dark and dangerous places and clearly understand that if any member of the christian clergy ever approaches them or tries to talk to them that they should create a scene in an effort to draw the attention of any passing police patrol, call 112 on their phones for urgent police assistance

Every country that has a theoretic government are places were you would not want to live. The track record and shameless lies and hypocrisy of religion are no foundation to build a moral framework on or to build your life around let alone a society.

All those great religious people like MLK and Sister Prejean, could have done the same things without the need for religion as an impetus. We don’t need religion to do the right thing.

Fantastic and perfectly stated!! What a powerful, honest, and factual dissection of the political pulse today. I am "spiritual" per your definition and self-proclaimed for years and have had issues with the hypocrisy of people trying to declare their Christianity. The last few years have further punctuated the increased hypocrisy that has risen to a fever pitch. I have been in a daze wondering where their "love your neighbor as yourself" and "hate the sin, love the sinner" is in their practice of being Christian. I could never come to terms with that in church and definitely not now. Bottom line - spelling out the hypocrisy and spreading this message with humor is the best medium. Keep your mission going with much success!!!! Thank you for spreading the Word! ❤❤❤
