Used 125gb of the 128gb of storage in this Galaxy S21. A not-insignificant chunk of that is photos and videos, so the removal of the SD card slot is really starting to affect me on this phone.

Or have a socketed nand flash chip. You will have to backup the system files before hand but it’s much faster than an SD card.

Removable storage is something I never want to see return. MicroSD cards are far too unreliable for my photos. Not to mention slow as shit and especially unsuitable for apps.

ESIM's have existed in Android based smartphones way before Apple started using them. ESIM's are by no means new. Android phones didn't all switch to using ESIM's exclusively so I don't think that other companies are going to really care. Makes me wonder just how easy its going to be to travel with an iPhone that has ESIM vs an Android smartphone with a sim slot. It's not like you can get a travel sim at the airport, or stay anonymous by using an unregistered sim.

You don't get less, often removing one part means another part increasing in size. For example either an extra camera or a bigger battery. Only Samsung fanboys use SD cards, everyone else doesn't.

You go pay $5,000 for a camera that can make phone calls and am additional $35 a day so you can have permission from Apple to transfer your photos off the camera you overpaid for. I'll be here with my $100 LG that can do more with no subscription fees or needing permission from a corporation to use, and if I need a camera, I'll buy a Nikon for another $100, with better resolution, more features, swappable batteries, better mic, better zoom, autostabilization, and a swappable SD card.

Fun fact : LG G2 didn't have the SD Card slot and removable battery. It was released in 2013. Maybe that's the first phone to remove the extendable storage. But in LG G3 it has the extendable storage back along with the removable battery

@Diamoondust It took some getting used to not having the fingerprint on the back. I do really like the bigger battery. The camera is outstanding, but i will never use all the options. So far the S23 ultra has been a decent upgrade. I still miss my old note9. I use it for other reasons still besides calls and text.

I'm already there. I haven't had a new phone in 7+ years. I currently use an old Blackberry for basic calls and text, and I have a Samsung S5 that I'm building. It's a great phone when you ditch the stock firmware and install Lineage OS. It's got upgradeable storage, removeable battery, headphone jack, IR blaster, LTE network support, and is still better featured than most of the phones my carrier has been trying to offer me.

@@ashii_ii There's something like 12 different version of the S5, depending on which market it's for, and network support. Verizon had their own version which was the SM-G900V. I would find out which LTE band you need to access, and find a model that has a compatible modem. "Support" might also be a software issue. My carrier doesn't "support" my Blackberry. I can't get the Service Books from them to enable data and MMS, but it still connects to the network for calls and SMS.

My biggest issue is that you can’t just buy a new unlocked phone and slap your old sim into it to activate it. You also can’t take your sim out in case your phone breaks and put it into another backup phone.

Technological advancememt issues supposed to make things more convenient but not to make your life a living hell. I've lost count how many times i had to just pop out my sim from one phone to the other cuz battery died or phone is broken. So they telling me i need to contact the network operator just to swap my sim? Utter foolishness. We all know it ALL about another step up in apples persistent strides in their walled garden. Where is the consumer protection authority in this??!!! Utter foolishness!!!

Ehh, i was able to slap my iphone se simcard (the version b4 steve jobs passed) and slap it into galaxy s8. Then using the same sim card, and slap it into s20. All AT&T rep did was take a scissor and snip off the extra plastic. 🤣 Going from Standard to Micro to Nano.

Actually, the EU passed a law basically forcing ALL companies to have removable batteries. This takes effect sometime in 2027, but this might actually become a reality. Edit: THIS ALSO APPLIES TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES, LAPTOPS, TABLETS, *AND* E-BIKES- LESS GOOOOOOO!!!!!

Yes! Only entry level and few midrange phones have expandable storage and headphone jack. It is such a basic thing to have. I’ll add one more: FM radio. It can be extremely helpful if there’s some sort of weather emergency and/or broadband dies to get updates. Phone companies seem to have convinced people that those are “ancient” old grandpa tech. I hope some big company realise this void in the market and design phones with practicality in mind. Xiaomi phones even has IR blaster. It’s like a Swiss Army knife of phones.

Sony should be the example of what "high-end" phones supposed to be, supporting physical sim card, sd card and also still has the headphone jack with the specs that you would expect from $1000+ device. But unfortunately they're not bothered to sell and advertise their phones more widely to people outside of Japan, hell, I don't even know if they advertise their phones in Japan at all.

In the Galaxy A7 2017, they had separate slots for the SIM card and the SD card. So even if Samsung supposedly removed the slot for the SIM card, there is still a chance for the users to have a slot for expandable storage.

Lets be honest, storage is very cheap nowdays. My phone came with 256 GB storage. And no expandable storage. 256 GB is more than my laptop has. And it isnt even halfway full. Despite having a lot of games and photos. As long as phones come with enough storage, it wont really be a problem. And my phone isnt an iphone.

The thing is that its only in the us, countries where e-sim isnt really relevant and physical sims are the ones most people use, well in those countries that change wont happen, even Apple's iphone 15 didnt apply that change to those counties I dont know much about all countries, but I know that in my country Israel absolutely no one uses e-sim unless they are traveling to another country

Another thing about esim is that outside of us, operator tend to be quite scummy. you really risk loosing your number forever if they f*ck up. with a physical sim you always know that you own that number, unless the operator effed up majorly

It doesn't work that way. Having a sim card doesn't guarantee you own anything as the operator is the one that controls the number. Having a phone number associated with a sim card doesn't prevent the operator from releasing the phone number into the ether.

@@imzjustplayin we're living in different place bruh, where i live, the operators are too lazy to make "new" stuffs, that includes esim system ,mostly it's half baked, and there is no way to transfer it to another phone if you decide to upgrade since simply they don't make that system at all and even the sim card system makes it really insanely hard to get the same number if you've lost yours, simply because they make that system half baked as well. I understand that at the end of the day, the operator can just say "f*ck you, we're giving your active phone number to other phone" but at the current situation, they simply doesn't even have a system in place to do that.

I get your point, it's very valid, but cloud storage and the phone's high amount of storage give me more than what I'll ever need, and every 2-3 years storage options increase a little anyway, so when I transfer data, I'll have extra anyway. Talking about vulnerabilities to hacking, I think that it does depend a lot on the service you're using, and I don't think that a service that's entire purpose is to allow you to safely store data would cheap out on security, especially if it's a big company like Google. But great point with connectivity, but as we move on to a world going more and more digital we are getting faster and faster speeds for cheaper, so I don't think that would be a problem in a few years.

It's very convenient, especially if you need it on multiple devices at a time, and for ginormous amounts of data (which is becoming more of a need in recent years). I think I prefer physical expandable storage purely because of the convenience and because of the physicality. It's convenient that it acts like an actual extension to ypur storage, instead of a seperate one. And I personally prefer like having a physical little thing that i can touch and see and actually physically move rather than a menu screen for my data on a server thousands of kilometers away.

You are right. To add what about what comes with the storage you talked about? Control. They want you to use the cloud. Eventually it's just an access device. You have no option to switch Sims or store on the device. In Germany I had to file paperwork with the government to have a sim in country. They already removed the ability to switch networks on your phone. Leaving LTE and 5g but you used to be able to manually switch to all networks.

Honestly, I don't really need headphone jack, because Bluetooth saves 99% energy compared to wired. But it would be a serious issue if Android phones went "full Apple mode," and tried to force users to store everything in the Cloud... Then, it's always a matter of: "what can I delete from my phone, to make space for another thing on my phone?" 😂

@@ThePhoneix999 You are SO backwards... BlueTooth IEM's and headphones can both save a ton of power from the phone, AND increase audio clarity versus a wire, which can degrade. The user is free to place the phone anywhere, maintain device audio/voice control, and never worry about the cord snagging, or being too short/long. Conversely, I was happy to double the storage of my phone with a spare 128GB MicroSD card I had laying around.... Then I checked prices, and found that a high quality 400GB card barely costs more than a premium 256GB one, but less a good 512GB one. So, I technically quadrupled my storage from 128GB, to 528GB, and the phone is completely happy with it. Now I have all of my music archives on it (32GB), so I can play the music I want any time, anywhere, even inside the walk-in fridge, or out in the boonies when hiking, etc. WiFi isn't always available... Network can't always maintain connection... But I can load up my own media for those times, and consider things decently covered. It's nice to save whatever you want, basically without worrying about storage, for at least a year... Unless I'm downloading 1+ GB per day, daily for the year. 🤣

Esims are actually great. Certainly if you’re traveling frequently. Hopefully this will kickstart the standard of phones being unlocked. Many carriers offering free trials on esim now in the states. You can get service easily in most countries right when you land without anything more than a payment method and wifi connection.

In the countries where eSIMs are a common thing it will probably will be like that. But in places such as South Africa (where I live) it probably won’t be much of a problem any time soon since we only have one carrier service that offers eSIMs for your phone (but even then, very few people use it)

There's other types of expandable storage, like a usbc flash drive. Also I feel like internally expandable storage is for those people who do "x photo is why [character] looks/feels like this" posts. Also, when phone frames get bent, the sim/storage tray is the thing that gets stuck, until the frame where the tray is located is straightened out. Also the pin that allows removal also seems to get damaged a lot when the aforementioned frame damage happens.

You’re more than likely right about this, but the phone makers that have removed Micro SD Card Slot support have also kept removable storage functionality by still allowing those phones to have removable storage devices, depending on their power draw/source, connected through the phones’s data port, or charging port. Which allows the transfer of files and important media to the connected storage device. This does include iPhones with the lightning port, but it’s better to get apple certified dongles, if needed, for this task… though I’d recommend to just upload you media to iCloud then download it onto your pc, since that’s a way better method than waiting for ages on the slow as balls data transfer with the lightning port.

Most smartphone companies are earning less and less profit per device sold each year(simply substracting cost of raw meterials from the MRP doesn't calculate the profit they makes, there are a ton of other things to consider too. For example, taxes, retailers' cut, employees salary, cost of those millions of phones that doesn't pass the quality control tests, manufacturing equipments' cost, etc..)

Regarding the sim card, I think it depends on the country where they release the phone. Maybe in US they'll follow, but like in my country, only 1 provider support this and it isn't available widely and not sure it is an obligation for future therefore It might not happen here which make other phone going to follow.

E-sim is kinda practical. It increases water resistance by a lot so drowning your iphone 14 series is now almost impossible when you follow the right orders to prevent it from drowning, maximum 1m for 30 minutes or so. You can search or ask repair shops among you to collect data of drowned ip14s. You'll be surprised how well sealed those US iphones are compared to european ones. I saw somewhere on KZfaq one video about those iphones, then he throw it in to the lake with small steel and string attached to this iphone and after 6 hours, roughly 4m deep he took this iphone out and it still worked. Then he bought simple sealing plug for the charging hole and he covered speakers and microphone with some dustproof covers. The iphone survived 13m deep immersion for 2 hours befor it broke. He than tested EU market iphones and after 1 hour and 4m immerse, iphone was dead.

Remove headphone jacks is to sell air pods more I agree with headphone jack and sd card removal because which will cost more for IP rating cost with those two extra holes Remove simcard tray is i think to save invironment and problem of sim card being taken out after being stolen But putting plastic peice instead of sumcard tray is to save redesign cost just for USA region But i dont understand what is the reason for removing charger? It was not clearly to save the planet because we have to buy a new charger which comes with a seperate box and ends up more plastic and packaging Removing charger is simply to harvest more money from customers

While my Galaxy A14 did not come with a charger in the box, it has a pretty good DAC, a microphone Jack, a MicroSD card slot that can hold up to 1 TB and a Sim slot. I MUST BE LIVING IN THE FUTURE.
