Welcome to the second episode of the Serpent in the Blade Viking Sword series! Join me as I grind, etch, and polishing the blade to its final form. This phase of the process has been quite extensive, given my decision to avoid forging any bevels or fullers in the blade to mitigate the risk of cracking during the quenching process.
My process has been as follows:
- Grinding flat the two faces of the sword with a 36-grit belt.
- Marking and grinding the profile. Here I used an old belt since the sharp edges tend to wear fresh belts prematurely.
- Grinding the fuller with an 80-grit ceramic belt on a 15cm radius contact wheel.
- Grinding the bevels with the same belt on the slack belt to achieve a convex grind, followed by a 150-grit belt.
- Hand sanding up to 320 grit.
- Four cycles of 5 minutes in a solution of 1:2 Ferric chloride to water, washing and scrubbing with fine steel wool in between each cycle.
- Polishing with file diamond paste and pieces of cotton.

I know a lot of people are probably suggesting using the grinding dust for Damascus steel but given that it's already pretty fine and not much more than iron powder you'd probably normally use, I'd suggest instead keeping most of the integrity it still has for looks and encase it in resin for scales for a knife or something. I think that would retain more of the shape and texture that would probably get lost by forging it

You should create an adjustable steady rest for your belt sander with s heavy base, adjustable height and throw. You will get much more control over your fullers and bevels rather than trying to free-hand it. It's a beautiful blade, I can't wait to see it finished with a cool grip and guard.

11:45 I wonder if this steel dust can be used for cannister damascus? I assume it's far too impure, but maybe soaking it in flux/ baking out moisture/ some combination or variation of those things could help?

I wonder why the blade is so short?? Did you have a specific length in mind or is it because of the de lamination from the first vid? And i hope you will make a nice scabbard for the sword!! :O Very nice project, the pattern is very pretty :D

Props for free handing a fuller in the sword. 😉 That is no easy task, granted it’s a large fuller… but still not easy. I’ll say it really sucks what happened to the tip. Not sure if it has to do with welding threw the forge scale, improper fusion from added filler on top of access nickel, or lack of heat at the tip… may have been something else. But regardless it still looks amazing and can’t wait to see it complete.

This is probably a stupid question since you've said you've tried it, but could you separate it out with a magnet or does it lose its magnetization somehow in this form? I suggested encasing it in resin for scales or something because even if you could make Damascus from it, it probably wouldn't look all that different from regular iron powder canister Damascus.
@erikcourtney1834
@erikcourtney1834 3 ай бұрын
@@joshclark44 some of the ceramic or aluminum oxides from the belt stick to the steel dust, and almost impossible to completely separate. I’ve even tried to pan out the steel( like gold panning). Not to mention all the steel dust is oxidized. Notice the dust or debris that are collected are glowing red, which means they’re oxidized in a standard environment. Oxidized steel will not weld together. Yes flux helps with Joints but powder in a canister is completely different. Hope this helps
