Our partner and Yanesha leader Marcial Ortiz Espíritu describes the apiary project being realized by his association of local Indigenous federations in #Peru’s Oxapampa-Ashaninka-Yanesha Biosphere reserve, seeking to cultivate ecological and economic sustainability.
A master of the honey process in coffee production, Marcial has distributed bee boxes and led community workshops for Tsachopen’s comuneros to incorporate apiaries into their permaculture plots in the Selva Alta. “Meliponas” (Tetragonisca angustula) is a unique species of stingless, honey-producing bee, that allows rural farmers to create a high-quality honey while also regenerating biodiversity, protecting the land, and providing a powerful antibiotic medicine.
IRI’s Program Director spent several months in Tsachopen in 2019, eventually leading to the development of a network of 20 organizations supporting 36 different Indigenous groups across 7 countries: #ChacrunaInstitute’s #IndigenousReciprocityInitiative of the Americas (IRI), a ground-up program emphasizing local agency, challenging conventional philanthropic models and supporting Indigenous autonomy.
