I start my epic voyage following the mighty River Severn. In this first episode, I look for where Britain's longest river starts from, upon Plymlimon in Wales.

Thank you - you're very kind 😊 Louise. Yes, I enjoyed walking and making this - even getting wet was part of the experience because it was a magical moment to be at the place where both the Severn and The Bristol Channel starts. I look forward to see how the river changes as I move south. Part two will be coming later this week. Thanks again, take care Paul. 👍😊

Thank you! I am up to part 23 of The Severn Way now (Sharpness in Gloucestershire) - I have 3 more walks and videos to do to complete it to Bristol. I also do Cotswold Walks as well as the entire Cotswold Way. My latest Cotswold Walks video will be published this evening all being well - it is another one looking at how you can visit parts of the Cotswolds without a car. Cheers! Paul

@@westcountrywanderings Thank you Paul, much appreciated. Even though I'm Dutch, I really love the English landscape and your videos convey a love for the English countryside. I hope to one day be able to walk one of the trails in England myself. For now we are concentrating on the Pieterpad in the Netherlands which is approximately 500 kilometers long over 27 stages. Cheers! René

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland I couldn't resist breaking away from looking at your back catalogue. This looks to be a cracking walk and by the look on your face, one you are really enjoying. An absolutley wonderful video on the source of the River Severn. Your still photographs were fabulous. Your commentary so informative and your historical facts, fantastic. The scenery was very impressive despite the rain snow and hail! I know you got very wet and probably cold. Thanks so much for producing this brilliant vlog. Can't wait for the next part .

Ah, you started The Severn Way! Well, it'll be a long time before this particular 'book' is finished! Probably won't complete it until next year, to be honest - over twice the length of the Cotswold Way, and most of it is much further from where I live. I am thoroughly enjoying it though - glad you are enjoying watching it! Cheers Michael. Paul.

I will feel a bit more satisfied when I (hopefully) have completed the entire Way to Bristol. I feel like I am making real progress now. It is such a shame that the Severn Way is not supported by local councils like the Cotswold Way is, and it seems to be entirely ignored by 'walking influencers' on Instagram and KZfaq. It isn't 'on trend', say, like the Pennine Way, for reasons I don't understand at all. I am hoping to redress the balance in my own small way. Thanks again Lee, take care, Paul 👍

Only just investigated this series, what a great idea for a walk, it's so strange to think of the severn as this little (albeit fast running) stream. I'm so used to seeing it below the severn bridges where it's huge! I better get a snack, I have a lot of catching up to do 😁

Thanks Jesse! Yes, there are at least 23 videos in this series so far (there are couple which focus on specific towns and cities en route like Shrewsbury and Worcester which aren't walks as such) - I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience so far, although it has taken me well over a year to get this far (Sharpness in Gloucestershire) from the source here. I was original just going to the bit in 'my' Westcountry area, staring at the Shropshire/Worcs border and heading south from there, but I then thought, why don't I walk the whole thing! Each one takes a while to film and prep, as well as edit, amogst all my other videoing, and non-KZfaqy things, like eating and sleeping!! It was quite surprising how quickly the little stream at the source soon widened into quite a substantial river fairly early on. Been amazing following the progress. Enjoy! Cheers, Paul

I know what you mean by the book talking to you Paul. There it was willing you to be curious and I'm glad you took up the challenge. It's a great river. I've walked the Wye and the Severn has appealed to. And I've walked Plynlimon many times so this video and adventure grabbed my attention straight away. Lovely walk up with real interesting information shared. Good on you for sucking it up on top. You were going to get dry later. I recommend a walk over to Plynlimon. Well, good going. I'm on board to follow this one. All the best. Mark

Thank you Mark! I am just editing the Atcham to Ironbridge section now as I write this. Will take me a while to get to Bristol though (as I am doing other videos, and, well, life stuff!) It is a shame that a lot of the Severn Way path is in both very poor condition (necesitating lengthy detours) and very seldom walked (I really don't know why, apart from the poor maintennce, which would improve if more walked it). Both Powys and Shropshire Councils are notoriously bad at footpath enforcement and maintenance. Hopefully, it will improve when I head south and get into Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. I don't regret taking the challenge on though, as I am finding following the progress of this long river a joy, and it passes next to some brilliant places, like Wroxeter and Buildwas Abbey. Thanks so much for watching and following the trip. I have just subscribed to your channel. Cheers, Paul.

Thank you! Considering its importance as a river, in terms of commerce, water supply and culturally there is surprisingly very little on KZfaq about this long distance route. Sections of it are hardly walked at all, and are very overgrown, as I find out in later episodes. However the views are superb and I personally love the quiet and emptiness. Hi Paul, a great start for a trip along the River Severn. I can vouch for the rapid change in the weather in Wales. In the 1960s a group of us from the cycling club were close to that area over the Whitsun Bank Holiday (now called the Spring bank holiday). We left the Youth Hostel at Hay-on-Wye in glorious sunshine wearing shorts and tee shirts and headed off to the Black Mountains. When we were almost at the summit the weather changed to snow, that was cold on bare arms and legs. Fortunately it wasn't long before we started to descend back into warm sunshine, it was certainly a shock to the system. Looking forward to following your adventures along the Severn Way and see you in Ironbridge 😊

I love your videos and this one is of particular interest to me as my parents had a place in Ystumtuen . This was way back in the fifties and sixties when the children didn’t speak English until they went to school. Nant a Moche dam was built during this time and the houses in the valley were flooded over by the new reservoir. I climbed up Plynlimon from this point a couple of times in search of the source of the Seven and the Wye. Excuse my spelling of the Welsh name it’s a long time since I was there. The county at that time was called Cardiganshire. By the way you really must try harder with your pronunciation of the Welsh names.
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Andrew. That is a great comment. Yes, one of my guide books gave me some alternatives as to how to get to the source of the Severn on Plynlimon, and one of these from the Devil's Bridge end was one that was mentioned - much more arduous and lengthy of course! Yes, I do find Welsh counties confusing - is Llanidloes in Montgomeryshire or Powys? Both are mentioned on the road sign! As for Welsh pronuncation - I'm afraid that is me trying! I did get a 'U' in GCE French! That is one of the reasons my channel doesn't cover Wales (this is the only exception (and Powis Castle)), because I wanted to cover the river in its entirety - just doing the English section wouldn't make much sense. There are some brilliant Welsh KZfaqrs, including some great 1st language Welsh speakers, who do a far better job than I ever could. Having said that I think Wales is a most beautiful country, and there is a lot to explore. I particularly found the town of Llanidloes to be exceptionally friendly - more so than any other place that I have visited on my channel. Thanks again, Paul

Hello Don, thank you for a lovely comment. Yes, I will be doing all the Severn Way down to Bristol. I did slightly 'cheat' on the next episode because for part of the route the Way goes along the road, and I didn't want to retrace my steps back to my car, unnecessarily adding to the walking miles. But, apart from that, I will be walking all of it. However, it will take a little while for me to complete, because of other projects and home commitments. Thanks for watching and commenting; it is appreciated. Take care, Paul.

Hello Paul. Thanks for all the video's you do. We really enjoy watching, especially those about canals and railways. Speaking of which, I think you mentioned the towpath at the Ocean being open. Is it? If so we'll be up there very soon. Cheers, Fee and Paul
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That's very kind of you. The situation regarding The Ocean's towpath is a complex and confusing one at present. It 'opened' for an official bridge (Jubilee Bridge) naming ceremony (which was unannounced) only to close quickly again a couple of hours later. This was about 3 weeks ago. It then reopened for the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, but closed again yesterday to repair the serious damage to the canal. I have no idea, I'm afraid, as to when it will completely reopen, as nothing has been published on the Cotswold Canal Trust's website. I don't know anyone who volunteers either, so have no more information at this time. Sorry I can't be of more help - I have filmed a short bite on the towpath that I did during the Jubilee weekend which I'll upload soon. Fantastic project, Paul! How long was your day may I ask? 4 1/2 hours from that sign to the source seems an overstatement; just 7 miles and those paths looked blissfully well maintained. Is it deceptive though? Nicholas Crane on his long hikes always packs a large umbrella, I’ve read, despite looking odd sticking out his rucksack. I’ve thought about it on occasions but, like you, I just get wet. 🙂 Looking forward to the next episode.
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ian! Yes, I remember Nicholas Crane from Coast very well. I'm not sure an ☔ would have been much use there - it was coming down sideways with force! Yes, that sign did seem a bit on the time excessive side. I think I started about 11am ish, and got back to my car around 4.30pm - so 5 and 1/2 hours for the return walk, including all the filming, pieces to camera and photography. Would have taken at least two hours less without the camera work. Most of the paths were very good; however the final 3/4 mile stretch is poor terrain - very peat boggy - a lot of the path's flagstones have sunk - meaning your feet get very wet! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Paul 🙂👍

Hi Paul, couldn't resist coming back to the start to see the source and of course to learn about Sobrina!! You looked soaked but happy to have got to the source. I hope you didn't catch a cold, you looked good on the next day, in the next video. I don't know mid Wales at all, I've hiked the Breacon Beacons and Snowden and done part of the coastal path near St David's and visited a few of the narrow gauge railways. This place looked just as great and maybe quieter. Thanks very much for taking me along. The most spectacular river source I have seen out here is the River Mundo. It exits a cave system high up in a very steep valley end. The waterfalls are really beautiful. Now in certain conditions the water comes spurting out at great velocity up to 80,000 litres per second this gives you an idea kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h713gKWprN-4dmQ.html. The river makes its way out to the Mediterranean not far from where I used to live but it seeps out in a trickle totally different to the magnificence of the Severn. The waters are taken for irrigation as you can imagine, further down stream you will find lots of waterwheels (I have posted a couple) there is also a rice growing area. Thunderstorms today and lots of snow higher up. This is really good news more is forecast, let's hope it doesn't cause any unwanted problems. Have a great weekend.
