"Hercule you've broken my pointing stick, I've nothing to point with now!" This song and film are baked into my neurons. My Dad and I always loved watching Peter Sellars - do anything. Hearing this song now, it's exquisite. Wow.

The scene where Clouseau is in his office, and he goes to page Hercule on his intercom, he says 'Miguel' first, then 'Hercule'. When Clouseau gets his hand stuck in the globe stand, Hercule helps him get it unstuck. After he says, 'Look! Now I've got Africa all over my hand!', during the fade-out, you can see Graham Starke start to smile. When Clouseau is talking to M. Ballon while they're playing billiards, Clouseau says, 'You came home, found Maria in the hands of Miguel, and killed him in a rit of fealous jage!' All those were mistakes that were kept in the movie because they were liked.

@@goflee1713 "Someone" made a mistake. For ONE, Elsie has an obvious European (Swiss?) accent that pops through, here and there, in every one of (or maybe I should pronounce that, "off") her songs.

Whenever I try to sing my grand babies to sleep, this is the the most soothing melody that comes to mind. Heard it about 50 yrs ago and searched for it recently when the haunting melody just sprung back into my mind. I'm so glad I found it. Many thanks for this post. I love this film and have watched it several times. Whenever I watch it I am captivated by the intro song The Shadows of Paris. I wish I knew for certain who sang the song but sadly the 3 singers who appear to be candidates ( Gina Carroll, Elsie Bianchi, and Fran Jeffries ) are all deceased. According to the imdb website the singer is Gina Carroll.

1) A Shot in the Dark is the best Pink Panther film, no competition. 2) This opening song is one of the best songs made for film, period. It not only sets up this film really well, but it stands alone on its own right. It somehow works both in the setting of this comedy, but also as a mournful, melancholy piece by itself.

Agreed on both points. Peter Sellers didn't like this film at all but since I first saw it when I was a kid it's been an absolute firm favourite ever since. I was lucky enough to record it the first time I watched it so went through a period of watching it every weekend as my Saturday afternoon treat. I do wish this version of the song would be made available to buy. There are a couple of other versions but the original would be nice to have.

Underrated gem of a song (although you can expect no less from Henry Mancini). The other gem from this score is the main theme--which fared a little better since it was used for the DePatie/Freleng "Inspector" cartoons.

first of all - a wonderful tune and lyric and haunting rendition, whoever's doing the singing. It's a pity the instrumentalists rarely get individual credit - here they are superb I really enjoyed the movie and its predecessor. I've just listened to some Elsie Bianchi Trio recordings (on here) and am now listening to Fran Jeffries singing Meglio stasera. I would say it's Fran singing Shadows of Paris.

to 1935Comption as to who is Singing Shadows of Paris in A Shot in the Dark movie: because of singing style (enunciation) and accent (american) I would agree with you that it is Fran Jeffries. ( Elsie does a delightful cover, with her trio, however).

David Sutton The cover is nice, but if it is the same singer as in the movie, she must have recorded it years later, or lightened her approach because she was singing it as a Jazz Waltz (in the cover).

Gina Carroll definitely sings here !! So, on the Henry Mancini Songbook CD I have the sung version of Elsie Bianchi. This recording from 1965 differs not only from the jazz arrangement (piano and drums), but also from the singing. Elsie can't make the high notes and her voice sounds smokier. It is deviant to hear the better and more beautiful voice of Gina Carroll in the film! Here is the proof: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5eKn5Vym96dqJc.html + kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7Fzhax_krDRdHU.html In addition, her voice sounds a lot stronger than Elsie's and reminds of Shirley Bassey! Unfortunately this recording is not yet available on any sound carrier! There are always only the versions sung by Henry Mancini's choir and the versions sung by Elsie. I have been waiting for the original film version, sung by Gina Carroll and finely orchestrated by Henry Mancini, for ages !! Gina Carroll on CD, that would finally be a revelation !!

GINA CARROLL SANG IT? In 2012 nobody knew who sang the song? Wikipedia thinks it knows: "The title song 'The Shadows of Paris' was written by Henry Mancini. The singer is not credited but contemporary trade reports confirm it was Decca Records recording artist Gina Carroll." But no citation is given in support of this claim.

I agree about this song and song placement and the movie... it's great. But talking about good songs by great composers but the people are known and the Movie is not considered good; John Barry composed a song, Colleen Camp sang it called "Will this be the song I'll be singing tomorrow". Most will not be able to name the Movie.

You know, I tend to agree, but a couple of times the way she pronounces Paris definitely sounds non-American (it sounds like Pah-reess once or twice). Of course, maybe she's doing it for effect to sound a little French. Hard to say. I just can't believe there's a proper album version of this, it's one of Mancini's best compositions and arrangements, the very epitome of a torch song.

Elsie Bianchi did record a version of this song, but there's absolutely no way the song on the film was sung by her, and you don't need to be Clouseau to work that out, you just need to compare the two side by side. If it's a choice between her and Fran Jeffries, the latter is by far the most likely. Why doesn't someone just ask them?

Unfortunately, Wikipedia is not always accurate because of its allowance of people to add data without necessarily verifying it before it appears on the site. That is WIkipedia's big FLAW (Achilles' Heel, so to speak) and undermines it as a reliable authoritative site, but it is helpful in some instances as a starting point or reference source (which must be counter-checked with other sources for true accuracy).

I beg you to consider that the music of the film is one tone below that of the video shown here. then I ask you to remember that Blake Edwards was friend with Mickey Rooney, who, in turn, was a friend of Judy Garland. and tone of Judy Garland is one that, in my opinion, is closer to the voice of those who sang the first song of the film "a shot in the dark". so, for me, the singer is Judy Garland...

This sure isn't Elsie Bianchi. Bianchi ahs an excellent version of this tune which is done to a slow waltz beat with a bluesy piano played by Bianchi. Bianchi's voice is very different than the one here. I believe this to be Fran Jeffries. Both versions are excellent. This version is prettier. Bianchi's version is a bit more hip or cool.
