Just one correction: stunning strike actually decides its DC based on your higher stat between STR and DEX, instead of wisdom

The moment you said your build doesn't rely on that OP strength elixir , you got a sub from me. I know it's in the game etc, but it just feels like cheese to me for some reason. Defo be trying this build out.

Just a note to say there is an alternative to chugging potions of hill giant strength, which is using the club of hill giant strength in act 1. So you can have high Dex AND 19 strength. Using Astarion, put the club in the off hand, the knife of the Undermountain King (also from Act 1) in the main hand (so you can backstab) and you still get 4 unarmed attacks per round (two for each bonus action) for as long as you have ki points to spend. I'd simply go 4 Rogue (thief), then 8 monk.

Remember if you fail the cursed monks quest by killing him in act 3 you get a new version of the amulet which is great for monks i'd also use a bow partly for a ranged sneak attack, and for one other reason if you use arrows of darkness, you can put down none concentration darkness for the price of one attack action which is good imo because that's free obscurity right there i did that on a 1 rogue 11 shadow monk build i ran based on shadow blade and it was really handy for the class

Yep all great suggestions, any character built around darkness should for sure of the arrows in their inventory

Really perfect build for Astarion, it fits good his style and the bite mechanic. Most ppl make him Assasin/Gloomstalker.

You have inspired me to do another play through with Astarion shadow monk and Shadowheart. Plan to keep shadowheart as trickster for the role play and her blessing of the trickster to complement the monk pass without a trace ability. She can also just function well as "bait" with sanctuary to guarantee Astarion has advantage. She can use phalar aluve as well I may stop at 6 monk and put more levels in rogue for more sneak attack or 2 levels of spore druid for more damage. 7 monk and 5 rogue is also an option for evasion and uncanny dodge.

i wounder if Assassin would be a good fit for this since if you surprise the enemy you get auto crits on them though you do loose that second bonus action. with my monk i did all levels in Way of the Open hand and it was super fun to play, just running around as tiny forest gnome punching everyone and everything, i might respec my Astarion Origin to this tho since it looks super fun too.

this build seems like one of the less exploitative builds that could be viable on solo honor mode.

I've recently tried a solo shadow monk 6, thief 3, gloom stalker 3 build in act 3, with Bhaalist Armour, dual wielding Knife of the Undermountain King and another shortsword (Ambusher because I didn't have anything better yet), plus Deadshot and elixir of viciousness and it's just ridiculous... I could pick enemies off, one by one and disengage from combat with the shadow monk invisibility just being able to surprise enemies again and again. I wonder how viable it would be to play solo honour mode from the beginning with a build like that...

Yeah I love that there are still viable builds for weapon based monks, stealth can make the game pretty easy so you could probably get through it solo with a build like this

@UltravioletArts my main worry would be getting through act 1 before I get the invisibility ability, extra attack and two weapon fighting

@@kaue11 Yeah act 1 is the tough part, maybe you'd want to start going like 6 levels into gloomstalker and then respecing to shadowmonk in the mid game, depends on your party support as well, early monk levels can probably be fine too
