Red is sometimes a nickname for someone with red hair, typically a person with Irish ancestry. The character of Red clearly isn't Irish, which makes his joke funny. We find out later that his last name is Redding, and that Red is just a shortened version nickname.

35:55 The movie originally ended here with Red beginning his journey to find Andy. Two test audiences were disappointed by the ending, so they shot new scenes of Red finding the letter and the money and breaking parole and going to Mexico and finding Andy. There is something important to an audience about a storyteller fulfilling a promise made within the story.

Oh man, watching this movie in English for the first time and getting Morgan Freeman's famous narration would be an experience. Morgan Freeman's silky smooth, mahogany voice became everyone's favorite narration voice because of this movie. Regarding the "Red" and Irish joke: Irish people are stereo-typically very pale skinned and red haired (it's not exactly an accurate stereotype; the majority of Irish people are brown haired. But there are more red haired people in Ireland than anywhere else in the world; about 10% of the population). Morgan Freeman obviously fits neither of those stereotypes, but that's pretty much the joke.

My maternal line is Irish. I’m generally brown-haired but it acquires a definite red tint in the summer, along with my arms, legs, neck, etc. because the pale skin bit is spot on, we’re borderline translucent. I can almost get sunburn just from watching a weather forecast!

great review :) ..love your speech and comments. the movie must be seen multiple times.. it is deep. The message of Hope is great, and red's redemption... but there are many fun hidden gems... like Red telling Andy that Andy only had a "*sh1tty pipe* dream" of making it out to Mexico 🤔🤣
@Stogie2112
@Stogie2112 Ай бұрын
Assuming that Andy drove all the way to Mexico, he drove 2,448 miles from Portland, Maine to Fort Hancock, Texas. He then drove 1,260 miles from Fort Hancock to Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Total trip = about 3,708 miles. 5,967 kilometers

Andy had all the time and more, to take a long leisurely drive. Averaging just 100 miles/day, he would arrive in just two months. That would be nothing after 19 years in a cage. As well, Randal Stevens had no previous criminal record - "As clean as a virgin's honey pot". 😜

You made one of the best typos I’ve ever seen. I’m sure you meant Morgan, but leaving out the g, you get the Irish surname Moran (comedian and actor Dylan Moran, for instance). Morgan isn’t too far afield from that either, being a Welsh name of Gaelic and Germanic origins. Happy accidents, as Bob Ross would say.

"Mr. Hadley, do you trust your wife? What I mean is, do you think she'd go behind your back?" Andy almost got himself thrown off the roof because of his wife's infidelity. 😲 Andy was still suffering from his wife's betrayal. Rather than just tell Mr. Hadley that he could give the $35,000.00 to his wife, Andy first asked him if he could trust his wife. It was not a good conversation starter!

"Prison Reform" is largely an oxymoron. Remember when Andy said, he wasn't a criminal when he went to prison, but became one after being there. I've seen it happen that a young person might go to jail for a petty crime, and learn new and worse behaviors in jail or Prison. You have to get tough to survive in there usually.
