Thanks for watching!
This week's video essay is a look into Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption. The video covers who or what the film's title refers to, and some of the ways in which our protagonist, Andy, finds his freedom.

The observation that Red - who committed a crime - got out of Shawshank honestly, while Andy had to commit a crime to escape is brilliant. It's clearly there but I never noticed the dozen times I've seen this. The features of irony like this throughout the movie make the already great story so satisfying.

The perfect movie IMO. Besides Andy getting through it all, Red being saved is the most beautiful part of the story for me

“For the second time in my life, I have committed a crime: parole violation. I doubt they’d make much of a fuss, not for a crook like me.” So inspiring how it reverses the previous hopelessness into purpose and hope. Perfect film, my favorite of all time:)

My brother, who hates watching movies, missed seeing this in English one day, so I talked him into seeing it with me at home. As we were watching it, I could tell that he was getting into it because he referred to the characters by their first names as opposed to, say "the main guy" whenever he asked a question. This truly is a movie that anyone could appreciate.

Red: I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are better left unsaid. I’d like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can’t expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.

Here are my thoughts on my ALL TIME favorite movie. This movie has many elements, but one that really stands out is the contrast and the fight between Andy's and Red's characters and convictions. While Andy is a man who really believes in hope, Red thinks it's a trap that only leads to despair. But over time, as the movie progresses, Andy's belief in hope slowly and steadily wins over Red's heart. Finally during the end, when Red reads that beautiful letter from Andy, I think he has internalized that "hope is a good thing." This movie is beyond beautiful.

That hope is what keep's red from committing a crime and going back to prison...his hope to see the sea, see Andy again etc. gives him the courage to avoid giving into fear and going back to the walls and to take a fresh new course... my favorite character moment scene has to be red on the travel bus talking about how he doesn't know what the future holds but that he felt excited for the first time in a long while at the unknown.

The Shawshank Redemption has always been one of my favorites, I think it's probably still Darabont's greatest achievement as a director. It's incredibly moving and inspirational with incredible performances all the way through, I just can't say enough good things about it.

You simply cannot describe the plot or the meaning of the greatest cinematic masterpieces. Because they mean more than words can ever describe. They have the power of changing the mindset of a human being for the rest of a lifetime. They are an unforgettable experience. They have a soul.

I watch The Shawshank Redemption every now and then and basically weep all through the movie. Even the ending is so movingly portrayed that, although it is positive, the music, narration and cinematography all form an uplifting, inspiring picture that it keeps my eyes from drying. I find the whole movie cathartic and have to be in a certain frame of mind to appreciate it in all its glory. Truly a superb film and the only one that can break me into little pieces whilst I enjoy the experience.

I always thought it was Red's redemption story. It shows his parole hearings and he's narrating it and he goes from hopeless to hopeful. Andy always had hope. He didn't lose his hope. He also was innocent. There was really nothing there to redeem. Red on the other hand, was the "only guilty man in Shawshank". He finally gets released when he gets honest with the parole board too after just telling them what they wanted to hear for decades.

I think either in the book or film commentary that the redemption was of Andy. In that, as mentioned in the court scene, Andy is a cold and emotionless man(which is why his wife wanted a divorce and cheated). Contrasted by Red's words at the end when he says Andy was a bird to beautiful to cage. I agree with the other takes as well. But with Andy it isn't about redemption for the crime. It's redemption for not being there inside. It's get busy living or get busy dying.

why do most reviews state that Andy is innocent. it is never confirmed in any of the scenes, Tomy just tells a story that could help Andy claim innocence after he succeeds his exam but its not a solid proof.

Filmed in the old Mansfield O S R unit in Ohio. I misspent the 80s there for manslaughter, #125-764 Joe Patton. Now after almost 40 years has passed, and I have no skin in the game, I can say that I was frightened into copping a plea and that I was innocent of the killing they convicted me of. It took decades for me to find out what really happened, but I got revenge.

The first time I saw this movie it made it straight into my top 100. It instantly left a print in me : you care about the characters ; you wonder if justice will be served ; you try to read all the moral issues and even identify with some of the characters' choices and behaviours ; the walls, the office, the cafeteria, the yard, the cells, the library and all the elements of this finite environment become somewhat familiar. Of course I've watched it several times since and it feels like going back to a place where I feel really good. To me, seing a movie over again feels like revisiting the realm of emotions that I was going through the first time that I saw it. Thank you for this review.
