Mark played this role perfectly - to see a character get pummeled by guards, to the point of crippling him - and to be happy to see that, tells you he played a great antagonist.

@bpj1720 Everyone appears "human" when they're wimpering in pain and fear because they are no longer bullying someone else...now THEY are the ones getting bullied. Pain and fear are even MORE deeply ingrained in most animals than the desire to have power over others...It's actually a shame that it took him being maimed and crippled to finally learn that...but he'd have the rest of his life for introspection...

In films that involve Good vs. Evil, the bad guy's gotta be REALLY bad, and his punishment needs to be commensurate. While the Sisters escaped eye-for-an-eye, it was a great punishment choice.

currently 2021 and it has only gotten worse. these days it's nothing but sequels and remakes, superhero films and movies with forced political messages. movies aren't being made for specific groups anymore, now they try to appeal to everyone which just doesn't work.

His confused "ignorant fuck" reaction to Andy's description of severe brain injuries was thespian genius! You could almost hear his sack shrinking. Rolston is my favorite kind of actor, one that can do good guys and bad guys with equal skill.

That's a big part of what made Shawshank such an incredible movie, the cast was amazing, down to a guy like Rolston it was talent everywhere.

I've probably seen Shawshank six or seven times, but somehow I watched this whole video trying to remember which part he played!! I couldn't get it until I saw these comments. Old age sucks.

That was an excellent interview. Mark Rolston plays his roles with such conviction that you can believe that his IS that guy and not just portraying him.

Imagine taking a role where you realize that your character is this despicable person. Furthermore, imagine playing that character with such effort that the audience wants you to be pummeled. You sir, took on a role and absolutely crushed it! Without the Sisters, no one would have felt Andy’s pain nearly as much and the film wouldn’t have been the same!

Mark befriended my homeless brother yrs ago, and worked with him to make movie about the homeless community, but basicly the movie was more focused on the friendship between a homeless man and a rich actor. unfortunately the move didn't get finished , mark had encountered personal set backs, and couldn't finish the movie project. but I got to know him a bit, and he is just a wonderful caring person.

Loved him as Drake in 'Aliens' - one of my favourite all-time action movies. He was a great counterpart to Vasquez, the bad boy and girl doing hard time in the Space Marine Corps.

Mark Rolston from what I have read is highly respected as a character actor by many Star Actors and Star Directors for his talent and his knack of improvising as well.

This dude was the embodiment of my nightmares as a kid after watching Shawshank as a kid. Certainly dissuaded me from any vague ideas of leading a life of crime.

His role was one of the most important roles in the film. He wanted to tell society that the character he portrayed DO exist in real life. There are terrible human beings in this world and people need to acknowledge that message. It reminds everyone to recognize human predators.

The Mansfield Reformatory is a Shawshank tour museum and site in Mansfield,Ohio and the cell block was built in an old Westinghouse manufacturing warehouse building and there are many shooting sites throughout Mansfield,Ohio and some in Ashland,Ohio and Upper Sandusky,Ohio.

Intersting that he mentioned the Avengers, an ensemble movie, while remembering Shawshank, a fantastic ensemble film. Shawshank the much quieter and more powerful of the two.

I saw the movie for the first time via VHS. Rented from Blockbuster. I couldn’t believe how good it was. What was great was Red narrating Andy’s escape and Red then following him to Mexico. I was a scared as Red when he was out under the oak tree retrieving the box.

Without Mark, there's no Shawshank... Morgan did say in one of his interview,he said... Morgan part was the main plot in the whole movie,Tim did said...i almost reject to play Andy but thanks to Mark,i owe him a lot...Clancy mentions,Mark was born to play the part

The 90s has loads of classic films and Shawshank is one of them. It's one of the best films of the 90s. Edit: The 90s was a great decade for films.

Just saw this guy on SUPERNATURAL. He plays a crossroads demon.....with a Marlon Brando accent. He's a pretty killer after though, very versatile!

I would say that the whole cast did a wonderful job of their respective characters. What blew me away was Morgan, Reds character was white but Morgan certainly did so well as Red. I love that movie.

I really rated this guy [Mark Rolston] before - despite only seeing him as the 'bad guy' [Shawshank, Eraser etc]. Having listened to him speak and his views on the absolutely shite films 'Hollywood's churns out these days - I like him even more!!

He was great in this movie as a antagonist as well as the movie eraser where he works for the late James Caan's character. He also was good in the television miniseries from the earth to the moon as virgil gus Grissom and in the movie midway as admiral ernest king, admiral chester nimitz's immediate superior.

Mark made the same comment his other actors noted, Rehearsals before filming improves the performance quality. A large number of cast members had earlier theatre experience.

Movies like the Avengers, guardians of the galaxy and Iron man will never be like Shawshank Redemption, they never will. The Shawshank Redemption is an actors movie. There’s no CGI, no make believe, nothing fake. It’s just actors and directors doing there job.

@@PJHEATERMAN Actually you were correct in a sense. An early "meat suit" that Alistair was wearing was a character portrayed by Mark Ralston. I had to dig into my DVD collection. 🙂

I still see him and the sisters, I can see bits if the character in his facial mannerisms, subtle but still there. The casting directors knew their stuff.
