Since this movie took place in the 40s during this scene, $10 in mid 1940s money is nearly $150 today. I don’t know if this is a goof, or if they just priced it at that for the sake of simplicity, but there’s no way in hell a rock hammer would cost $150
@cdf3604 жыл бұрын
Dibab I do, and maybe I’m not aware of the exchange rates for prison contraband, but $150 still seems like a very steep price
@danielleza9084 жыл бұрын
@Dibab Everything you just said is irrelevant, since Andy clearly said the item costs 7$ in any gem shop. So the high price has nothing to do with the fact that they're in prison. The prison factor only accounts for the extra 3$.

It's a pretty special...it's unlike other films that people talk to you about. It's very important to people, in a deep way. And it's beyond just liking the film. It's more profound than that. I've had people tell me that it's shifted the way they think, that it brought them out of a depression, that it made them understand a deeper truth about themselves.

I really feel like Morgan Freeman was perfectly cast as Red. I can't explain it but he has the right 'aura' to be Andy's best friend...

Red had TWO "first Impressions" of Andy.......the first was when he was taking Bet's on which New Fish would crack during the first night. Red was NOT happy with The Tall Drink Of Water as he stated when he revealed Andy cost him Two packs of smokes......and of course the second "impression" was here in this scene! Wonderful movie!

@@joewhitehead3 Maybe because on the title. It took a friend to force me to watch it otherwise I was like what the hell does Shawshank Redemption even mean. I was hooked after the first 10 minutes of the movie, still one of my favourites.

What I don't understand is whether he ordered the hammer from Red with the intention to shape rocks or to escape. The carving his name with the rock hammer scene seems to indicate that the thought of tunnelling through the wall only came to him when the bit of the wall crumbled away.
@sha112353 жыл бұрын
That's probably what happened. He wasn't planning to escape originally, just use it for the rocks and stuff. Then when he saw the wall was loose, he asked for the poster to cover up what he was doing.
@danielr.y52619 ай бұрын
It's one of these things that it's subtle in the film, but the book explains more clearly. Andy had only his hobby in mind when he approached Red to commission the hammer. It wasn't until a couple of years later that he really made a plan to escape, and that's when he went to Red again to buy the Rita Hayworth's poster, and he looked really anxious. In the book Red explains to the reader that he misinterpreted Andy's uneasiness thinking that Andy was worrying that by buying a hot girl poster like most inmates do he'd lose his 'cold fish' reputation. In reality, Andy's anxiety had nothing to do with that; he was anxious because he had just realized that he had a chance to escape Shawshank.
