It's April 16, 1945, the Battle of Okinawa. The destroyer USS Laffey is conducting radar patrol so she's the closest ship to the expected enemy attacks. Its mission is to alert the US forces to the arrival of Japanese aircraft. But what the crew doesn't know is that on this day they will have to endure the toughest challenge of their lives - during 90 minutes 22 Japanese planes will attack the USS Laffey trying to bomb, strafe and directly collide with her. The chances of survival are slim to none. How could the crew and the ship survive one of the fiercest battles of the war?

I think the she just wanted to make up for the bad luck the the other USS Laffey (DD-459) had, being sandwiched between two Japanese battleships and sunk. She still did give a good account in that battle, but was ultimately sunk.

I've always felt that the spirit of the Benson Laffey has protected the Sumner Laffey. Nothing else explains why DD-724 was able to take so many hits and remain stubbornly afloat.

I’m just saying the ship that the Japanese really couldn’t sink was the USS Enterprise CV-6, claimed to be sunken by the Japanese 3 times, she never was and she earned her most famous the nick name The Grey Ghost, She is the most revered and decorated ship of WW2 in the US navy earning 20 battle stars, she became the first ship to earn the Presidential Unit Citation and the first ship and only ship in the US Navy to earn the British Admiralty Pennant, and at one point was the only operational Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific Enterprise Vs. Japan she is a true legend among the US Navy

The first "USS Laffey" was the one sunk at Guadalcanal. She charged the battleship Hiei as a Benson-class destroyer and fell victim to a withering barrage of gunfire. The Allen M Sumner "USS Laffey" is the one here, and I had the pleasure of visiting her one time with USS Yorktown. 3:09 Also nice reference to Battleship (2012).

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.

I visited the Laffey and Yorktown at Patriots Point last summer and it was a hell of an experience. The fore turret was open to guests and has a video that explains what it was like on April 15th; loud explosions, the screams of sailors, it had everything. Eventually there was an almost deafening explosion noise and the turret lights went out when the kamikaze hits the aft of the ship. It was an honor to be able to srand where those brave sailors stood, fighting as hard as they could against the kamikazes. Amazing video as always Yanhub, and thank you for telling the story of these heroes.

Completely agree, that these kamikaze pilots 'felt no pain' gives me no comfort, they surely dished out immense pain & suffering on the poor sods they invaded (one example: Rape of Nanking). As someone with severe chronic pain, I wish I could give it to people who start wars just for their egos, like Putin or the Japanese & German govt/military in 1930s/WWII. Insanely unfair how some people have to suffer for no reason while others who make people suffer endure no consequence for their actions.

Laffey was a few ships that the Japanese can’t sink. One such example was the USS enterprise, the others were the Iowa class horde of 4 ships, including Missouri, but most notably USS intrepid which survived 5 kamikazes and ironically sank the IJN musashi with the assistance from her other Essex class sister ships. I got 3 things to say here. 1st, amazing graphics! You guys just keep stepping up the game here and I love it! 2nd, I love that you brought in a Battleship reference with the “let’s drop some lead on these muther” “fire!” Absolutely loved that🤣 And 3rd, I got to see the Laffey on a vacation when I was young, and the Yorktown too. I knew it saw combat, but I never liked into the Laffeys hisotry, and I’m glad you guys brought this up. Remembering standing on that deck with on old WW2 vet, and now thinking of all that brought tears to my eyes. Y’all know how to tell history in a fun and memorable way, love y’all

You've Finally made a video of the Laffey, Sweet!!! I've personally tourned "The ship that would not die" at Patriots Point, South Carolina, it was a great experience! They did a great job on making you engaged with the vessels history. (If you're wondering what was "The ship that would not die" its the Laffey) [I forgot to mention that my profile picture is a photo I took of Laffey]

Damn the graphics and animations are becoming more and more amazing each upload! But yeah, just as the other commenters here say, can we also get one for the Enterprise? She saw her sister ships fall and she faced against all odds, yet still brought the war to the enemy. She was also there to help liberate my country, so I was pretty sad to learn that she got scrapped. Also, love the Battleship movie reference there!

Yarnhub continue to produce some of the very best quality videos on the internet. I’m never disappointed. They keep getting better and better. I remember there was a time the vehicles and settings looked sharp, but the humans looked a fair bit like play dough. But those days are clearly over. The human characters look fantastic currently!!! Great job Yarnhub!!! 🙏

I visited this warship back in June along with the Essex Yorktown! and the history was fascinating! You get to walk into the turret that was hit by the Kamikaze, and I felt a chill run up my spine. Glad to see a video made about her! Great Work as Usual Yarn

This laffey is of the Allen M. Sumner class, not to confuse it with the Benson class one. The loadout of US destroyers in this late into the war was top of the line and deadly. They had accurate(for the time) fire control directors that can lock in on the height and speed on enemy planes to effectively shoot them down. The only issue is theres not enough guns when the planes are coming in from different directions. There is only soo much lead those guns can throw at the enemy at a time when they dont have the luxury of our advance targeting system today until an enemy plane penetrates the screen and does damage to the ship.

One important aspect of this fight was overlooked in this video. Going back and remembering the Kamikaze episode of the show “Dogfights” from 2010, it was also mentioned that there were two LST’s (Landing Ship Tanks) that took part in the battle. Some of the kamikazes even overlooked USS Laffey to target the LST’s. These attempts were also unsuccessful.

It was actually two LCS (Landing Craft Support) vessels that were with Laffey, not LSTs. Specifically, LCS(L)-51 and LCS(L)-116. Both ships would be damaged in the attack that crippled Laffey. Also, I might have missed it, but I think the video forgot to mention Laffey’s air support actually arrived much earlier than depicted, and also at different times instead of altogether. First to arrive was four FM-2 Wildcats from Navy squadron VC-94 (flying off the escort carrier Shamrock Bay). They shot down several aircraft before being forced to return to refuel and rearm. A while later, USMC Corsairs (from VMF-441 on Okinawa) arrived in greater numbers to aid Laffey, as depicted in the video.

Both USS Laffey remain my absolute favorite stories from WW2. I've always felt that the spirit of the Benson Laffey watched over and protected the second ship to ever bear the name Laffey, and you certainly did DD-724 justice in this animation. Thank you, Yarnhub.
