Cool choice. I just brought up that song somewhere else a few days ago. It was on a comment thread from a song by The Knack which sounds quite a similar style to the Crystals. I can't remember the name of the song now. I will look for it and edit it into this comment. The Knack song is called The Feeling I Get. Look it up and tell me what you think. It hurts me that many people think of the Knack as one-hit wonders. It's true that the publicity of My Sharona has overshadowed all the rest of their music but they actually made quite a few other decent songs. Many were rejected due to some discriminating lyrics about girls and women. That's understandable, although the tunes are very catchy.

@@RayRay-zt7bj Thanks for the recommendation. I've just listened to it and you're right it is very similar, especially with that amazing Phil Spector sound. There was so much great music around back then that I think a lot of us took it for granted and only focused on the hits. Thank heaven for the internet so we can go on discovering great music from those golden years.
@RayRay-zt7bj

@@sallysteele9220 You know, it makes me wonder. Maybe that's why there isn't as much good music around today. I saw in a Vsauce video as Michael Stevens was questioning the fact of how many pleasing tunes are still available to write. I'm sure there are still lots. There is also good music out there somewhere. Much of it just doesn't get the publicity that most of the junk music gets. Either that or maybe our brains are only wired to understand the music that we grew up with. Thankfully, that's not the case with Jovaughn here. He has such a wide range of music tastes as I do also.

Just pronounce it as Shir-els, not Shir-el-ees . Wonderful reaction. You are the absolute best. I’ve been giving up on others that I had been following. You know the words to describe the voices, music, beat, and textures. I’m so impressed. I’m 77, so Motown Mondays are great. I’m in Nashville and I like some Country, like Kenny Rogers, Brenda Lee, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Reba McIntyre to name a few. I also played French horn in the concert band and had a love for Beethoven and Chopin.

I'm so sorry for your loss. No one can know just how much pain loss of a loved one can cause. I wish you the best. I used to love music and reading before my mother's death. I haven't played a song or read a book in two years. Today is the anniversary of her passing. I'm starting to to reinvent myself into a person that my mother would be proud of. I really didn't even want happiness, but I also knew that she would be very disappointed if I didn't find a balance.

I don't think she wrote for Motown. She worked from the Brill Building in NYC with Gerry Goffin, famous for housing many songwriting teams (Mann & Weil, Bacharach & David, Greenwich & Barry). Many of her songs were on the Wand/Scepter or Atlantic labels at first, including this one (Scepter).

@@normweldon9852 Yes, I remember that. Ellie Greenwich & Jeff Barry wrote several songs for Phil Spector's label, Philles, including 'Be My Baby' & 'Da Doo Ron Ron'. They made a couple of records together as The Raindrops. I've still got a single, 'What A Guy' by them. Later they wrote 'Leader of the Pack' & 'River Deep, Mountain High'. The Brill Building was a hotbed of amazing talent., wasn't it? Sedaka & Greenfield were there too. Such a fantastic musical era.

To me this was the first "Girl Group" before all the others in the 60's. These girls knew how to sing, beautifully, before the Ronettes, the Supremes the Shangrilas, and all the others did ever did. My heart just melts when I hear this one and the strings too. Like man, they set the standard.

You touched onto another one of my top 50 songs of all time! It is a record that I grew up with and it was one of my older brothers' records. I never got to buy a record of my own until I was around 12, so I always listened to their DooWop, Four Seasons, and other 50s and early 60s pop songs. Soldier Boy is another great Shirelles song that I still own on a 45 record.

Best of times, great music of all genres, love how Jay appreciates all kinds of music. Wish those in control of today's music output would be as open minded, and not just go for what's supposedly popular - don't mean to offend but modern music just doesn't appeal to me.

The Bee Gees recorded "Will you still love me tomorrow"as a tribute to the writer Carole King..Barry and the twins did it justice,especially Robin. Carole King also wrote"Natural Woman " for Aretha Franklin.

There were so many girl groups like this. The Chiffons, The Ronnetts, The Crystals, The Dixie Cups, and on Motown the Marvelettes. All were the backdrop to my childhood and youth. Some Sundays we have girl group Sunday and listen on a loop while we do the cleaning...... Can I suggest like a few others have, Sweet Talking Guy by the Chiffons.. talk about descant and harmonies.

This song is truly one of the great classics in the history of pop music and was the first #1 song written by the great Carole King. It has been covered by many singers, but IMHO, THIS version is the song. it ushered in the "girl group" era and so many fantastic songs followed because of the success of this song,

This song made history by being the First Song by a Girlband to go to Number One in the US. They had other hits like "Dedicated To The One I Love", and "Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This". "Dedicated" was an obscure R & B Song from the 1950's. Sadly enough they had to wait 20 Years to get Paid. So many Groups especially Girlbands got robbed. Carole King is to this day one of the greatest Female Songwriters of all time. What Diane Warren is to this Generation, she was to the 1960's.

I don’t listen to anyone else doing your listening to songs of past you never heard. You have the best personality and I would love to sit and talk with you because I am a 76 yr. Old music crazy about music . Only two kinds of music good and bad no genre is out of my music box. If you want to hear the best vocals I’d the great voice of Levi Stubbs from the 4 Tops please??? Listen to “Ask the lonely” . Just before he died and was really weak. He was brought out in a wheel chair to honor him. They started to play some off his music in the background and he started to really come alive singing with that beautiful rich voice of his. I love his and the Topps concerts.

allright J - taking the delorean farther back in time. beautiful song by another gorgeous group of the 60's black girl groups. and there were a lot of them. this song was written by the extremely talented carole king when she was 16. she wrote a bunch of songs used by motown groups and others. carole finally did an album of her own in 1971 called 'tapestry'. you may want to check out her song 'i feel the earth move'

This is one of the greatest songs of all time. I think I heard it 100 times before I really paid attention to how bold and ahead of its time it was. She's basically saying, "okay, we can bang this out, but you'd better not be shitting me about this love thing". And that string arrangement? Holy shit. This was their best and possibly their best-remembered song ("Soldier Boy" was a marginally bigger hit), but they had several other hits, as well ("Mama Said", "Baby It's You", "Foolish Little Girl"). Seriously, the "Girl Group-sound" is one of the coolest chapters in Rock/R&B history. I love that you are cracking the surface and this song is foundational to understanding the wider genre.
