What a blast to see the top world trainer have his dogs just run free and exercise naturally. E-collar is a great thing and gives dogs as much freedom as possible not being attached by a rope to the owner and still be safe!

There’s no way those dogs could get that level of fulfillment if they were on long lines. Anyone should be able to see those are some very happy dogs and having a great time playing. The e collars are keeping them out of trouble and safe while allowing them an enormous level of freedom. Great video!
@cfogle100

Yes they can get that level of fulfillment using long line but there's the associated and unnecessary danger of entanglement and chocking with long leads and collars on large acreage that e-collars eliminate. e-collars are more effective, safer and sensible than long leads. Although long leads are effective, mostly safe and are sensible, modern scientific technology has expanded the training effectiveness, safety, and sensibility and range of long lead training. It's correct that you say "e collars are keeping them out of trouble and safe while allowing them an enormous level of freedom."

@@cfogle100 Spot on - risk of injury is so real. After having a dog with a permanent chest injury from a long line getting caught on a tree stump, and after me having a rather gnarly scar from the line accidentally tangling with my ankle on a dog fetching a ball... @@cfogle100A dog that is completely free is different than a dog on a line. They have the ability to make choices good and bad. That’s why dogs are more relaxed off leash. Dogs on a leash do not have the ability to fight or flight. They can only fight.

100%. Cannot agree more. Of course I can't legally use ecollars in my state but I can see how they would have changed my dogs' lives, how it would have allowed me to take them hiking in the wild with complete safety, how it would have allowed my entire bitch to play with the other dogs safely etc etc etc. 😉 If you are reading this and you are anti-ecollar, please take a moment to consider; Ivan's dogs don't look suppressed, anxious, afraid of him. It can't be as bad as they say if these dogs are clearly having an absolute blast!

100 % agree E collars are a great training tool. I have issues with the ignorant people who think they are abusive and the ignorant people who use them with out getting instruction from a professional dog trainer. I used an Educator to teach my GSD, who had a very strong pray drive for rabbits and squirrels, that it is not a wanted behavior. If she would run after a rabbit across a busy street, she could get killed or maimed and I do care about my dogs, so I used an e-collar to "discourage" the chase. I argue that "positive only woke" folks don't care about their dogs. Now I don't even put the e-collar on her anymore and a rabbit can cross 20ft in front of her and she won't go chase it. YET, I have a better relationship with her, than many "positive only" trained dogs I see in the park who don't give 2 sh*ts about their owners, run all over the place behaving like lunatics with other dogs, never listen to their recall and have to be leashed a mile before the owners get to the parking lot. I walk my dog in a heel position between running cars in traffic and she wouldn't leave my side no matter what. Her recall is impeccable and always happens on first call. No matter where I go or what is in her environment, she doesn't leave my side unless given the "free dog" command and at home I am her favorite pillow. So much for fearing me or having a bad relationship. Dogs are drawn to and respect a fair and loving but consequent leader. They seem to despise owners without rules AND the willingness to consequently enforce them. Go get a cat. I am a believer that a few moments of discomfort guarantee a lifetime of off-leash freedom and keeps them off the blue-juice table - try and take that from my dog and me.

My adopted dog, probably 7yrs old, I had for 1 year unable to let him do what he had always done...catch squirrels and rabbits or trying to attack coyotes. He caught rodents on 10 ft leash, even. He had been allowed to run wild until he returned exhausted, but had been lost more than once and had some kind of traffic incident where he had become terrified of vehicles. I helped him cure himself of the terror in one lesson by stopping his predictions through walking in star-pattern until he was mentally exhausted and he walked right onto on a very busy road sidewalk and his terror was over then. Still I could not trust him when he was in the woods because he would be gone until he decided to return. I used food reward and praise for easy recalls but that never would work not when a wild animal chase began. Then I heard one word that changed everything > "existential". Make it existential. So I withheld food one day and stopped feeding him at home. The next day he was noticeably changed on our first walk in the park and I let him go free with many fast recalls for a little food all through our walk. By the way, electric collar on, in case something went wrong. He had been accustomed to it and how to turn it off. Everything changed when food came only through listening to recall and electric collar if he did not respond due to prey drive. Now he can fly through the woods and he can be trusted to not disappear. One whole year and then a one-day breakthrough from feeding change and back up with ecollar. He has freedom back and it's my freedom back too. I hated having him only on leash because he's a super runner who can fly over or through the broken branches. Could not do it without ecollar and him understanding that the feeding came through cooperation. Not about treats any more. A different dog, a happier dog resulted.

What what your correction level on the e collar? My dog is still testing me
@thankmelater1254
@thankmelater1254 6 ай бұрын
@@lilpap974 First I taught him how to turn it off - by obedience to a commands that he knew well, at high enough level to bother him if he refused, and immediate turn off when he began to obey. I know that Ivan does not use that method, but I'm of low skill level. When he was excited in prey drive and staring at a squirrel, I'd call him, give him a half second to show any response, then if ignored, full power for a split second. Full power on my $45 collar might be a lot less than full power on an expensive unit. I have nothing to compare to, except I sure wouldn't want it. Also, it depends on fur and sensitivity of dog and probably charge level of battery. You know it's not enough or not in good contact if he ignores it. When in a hunting mood with prey in sight it's different than when sitting at home. Naturally the dog must know the command very well or never use the collar like that. It freed him and me and he's VISIBLY a happier dog to have a lot of autonomy outside in the woods running about like he wants to. It was that or he would be doomed to boring walks and lack of real exercise and being tired out. Now that I've let him chase so long as he returned when called, he is testing the boundary, so I'm undecided on whether or not to let him continue to chase within my vicinity. Tired dog is good dog, so I am very tempted to keep allowing him limited chase range so long as he returns well when called. He's testing now though.

Great video. Perfectly illustration why e-collars are the best thing in the world for crazy, drive dogs - dogs that love to race around. The e-collar - used intelligently - allows those dogs to be free and race around without fear of being able to recall them and stop them from something that might cause harm. Great video. The e-collar lets dogs like this enjoy their lives. Never understood how walking a high drive dog on a leash gives much joy to the dog.

I have a rescue female greyhound, staffi pitbull mix. Insane prey drive. Dog listens perfectly, except for when there's hare and rabbits around. I'm from the Netherlands so using ecollars are forbidden. So I am one of those people who is forced to long line etc... But let's say in a hypothetical situation I followed an awesome course in Belgium, where ecollars are legal. And let's say hypothetically speaking we went through this course together and because of this I can let my dog run free all the time. That's all hypothetical ofcourse and I wouldn't never disobey the law nor would I advice anyone to do this. If I would even own such a thing it would naturally only make sound or vibrate, because I walking on a long louse line makes my dog so much happier than running free. Right ;) Great video, as always ❤

I learned to use an electric collar a few years ago. I wasn’t against them I just didn’t know how to properly use one. I have found it to be very liberating for my young Belgian with high prey drive. A few days ago I took my two Belgians to the mountains. My oldest did not need an e collar but I did put one on my two year old. They both ran and had a blast just like in this video. There were quail and other wildlife that my puppa was interested in but did Not chase as he knows not to now. It was also a very simple and clear learning process for him. A long time GSD fan here. I'm familiar with your expertise and happy to see you here on YT! I have owned and trained many different breeds, the majority second hand dogs, over the decades and always enjoyed the challenge of dogs that other trainers deemed "difficult" or "impossible" to train. Once won a HIT ( obedience) with a second hand Bloodhound back in the 70's, against the usual players ( Labs, Dobermans, GSD's etc).No force, only play was his key. This was long before play training was a thing. At that time there was only one other Bloodhound in the entire world that had acheived an OTC. Anyway, while I'm not much of a fan of the AKC anymore, I know that there are many good, but often very different, tools for dog training, including e-collars, that can work wonders with a given dog. Most of the time, I've not needed an e-collar, but when it was needed, it was literally the difference between life and death for that particular dog. Thanks for providing these videos and educating the public on this useful tool!

I think force free methods are perfect for mental stimulation for you and your dog. It really challenges your ability to communicate and the engagement between you and your dog. I think, when conducted early and with perfect consistency, it reduces the need for aversives when the dog is older. However, I think every dog has unique needs that force free methods cant accommodate. Not every dog needs an aversive, but not every dog can be reliably trained with FF alone. My dogs first trainer was force free (my local petsmart trainer) and she taught us so much. My dog loved her. Our second trainer was a balanced trainer. My dog also loved that trainer. Ultimately, if you can achieve a deeper bond with your pet and develop their respect for you, that is the most important thing. The problem with aversives is that too many people are not educated in the proper use of them and to many people don't want the professionals to educate on proper use. The reality is, if more trainers can educate on the proper use, then we would see less problems. Aversives are not abusive.

I would argue that force free methods are 'perfect' for mental stimulation. A lot of dogs get mentally stimulated by free shaping which most of the time causes frustration on the dog because they have to figure out how to get the reinforcement, they feel pressure and that pressure is turned off by them once they've solved the problem (negative reinforcement)

In his case, I am more than happy for him to chase critters; he’s a terrier, and that’s sort of the point. However, I do need him to come when called, and I wouldn’t put it past him to chase a car…. Or a coyote, which might not end well. Anyway, if he comes when called, it’s party time, and he usually does. If not, I’ll use the collar. He had been very quick to learn this, and it’s rare for me to actually use it. I do wish Ivan would do a training video on how to properly introduce the collar, because I’ll bet the techniques have really advanced since ZI first started using one. I can’t tell you how much I have learned from listening and watching Ivan, even though protection sports are not my thing. I have always had hunting dogs and have two cadaver dogs currently as well as the terrier.

Our family business is young 4 yrs old but we are helping people and it feels good. But online the FF community is already coming for us. Unfortunately it is worrisome because they can’t do damage to our business. Everyone taking our course loves us. We are getting people out of the house with their dogs and finally enjoying dog ownership. Any advice would be appreciated as we will not be silenced and definitely stand up for ourselves.

Thanks for a breath of common sense. What more can you offer the detractors to your way of training than to offer a platform to discuss? You are much more open and fair than your opponents. And so much more experienced, no surprise if you have few if any takers...

My first time watching you and I love your points! People don’t understand the freedom it gives dogs that need it. But let’s face it, many don’t do anything with their dogs and turn them into couch potatoes.

100% agreed Ivan, I was thinking about a situation...If in the exact moment Tarzan sees an Alligatorand you press the button to avoid a fatal interaction could give START to Tarzan making him open agression? I saw a Dobermann doing this with a trainer. Thanks bro🤘🏼🐺

Yup - I use the regular sized Educator on my intact working line black GSD every now and then when in the deep woods. I use a plastic prong collar when on public walks and use a muzzle when at the vet. Whatever tools keep our dogs safe and happy is good - positive only training is crap and does not work for most dogs

🐾That was superb. Thank you. As a science gal, I spend a lot of time trying to dispel the lies and misinformation that created the ridiculously false narrative of FF versus Abuse, and this video will help a lot. I do have 2 questions for you. 1) Is the study published yet? I can’t wait to read it and be able to point to a LEGITIMATE scientific study to counter the garbage proof that is out there being touted by the strictly FF community. I’m very curious how you broke down the protocols for comparison, since that is such a difficult and important part in a study like this. 2) I support all communication tools, aversive or not, as long as used responsibly to communicate with animals and not just to punish. Unfortunately, we all know there’s easy access to them and it means they’re often used by people who haven’t a clue, and they actually do cause harm. I know it’s currently wishful thinking, but do you have any thoughts on how these tools (e-collars and prong collars in particular) could be offered in a way to anyone (meaning trainers and average dog owners) that would include some sort of mandatory education and instruction on their use? I’m mortified by the uneducated users who hurt dogs with them and give these tools a bad rap. Thanks again!

I have 5 Jack Russells and they have been trained since puppyhood. They are around rabbits, cats, birds etc. They will come on recall 100% We are not aloud to train with e-collars. But we was succesfull anyways!! It takes more time and effort:) But love it! I know about many hunting dogs that goes to a legal e-collar handlers so they wont chase sheep during the hunt

E-collars etc are forbidden here in Germany but if they weren't I would use them. Dogs with real high prey drive would be forced to live a life on leash if approached with positive only. It worked with my Finnish Lapphund but je was just the easiest dog that got everything the first try and always did what I wanted. However it does not work with hard headed dogs. My white GSD is very dominant with low impulse control and strong headed. He gives me the middle finger if I use positive only. I can't use e-collars however I use aversives via leash correction and grab and hold or sometimes laying him on the side (not dominating him but it calms him down). It works great and he already doesn't chase deer etc unless it's jumping out the grass in front of him. If I was allowed to use an e-collar this would be no issue anymore either and he'd be completely free. And the e-collar would be way more humane than the leash correction and grabbing. The positive only movement causes more harm than it does good

Your dogs are beautiful! I have a reactive young black working line male GSD who I take out before daylight off leash on trails. As he grows he will only get stronger and I would like to know I can let him off leash but control him for safety reasons. I bought an e collar but just need to have the knowledge and confidence to use it. Thank you for a great video!

well let me see, just came back from a walk, opened garden gate and had leash yanked out my hand because a fox had just been through it, e-collar called him back, you'd never do p+ only with predation for him, its too strong :) I'm a trainee scientist in environmental science which includes behaviour and predation. there is no way force free works with every dog or every predator, none whatsoever, consequences matter in shaping behaviour in every species, especially social species. I'm excited to read the study, especially in UK :)

Is it possible to film a high prey dog in action when he gives chase say after a squirrel and what you do and how you do it exactly? I understand your dogs are already trained not to and it's hard to film because they're so fast but this would be something to see all right.

Before I knew better/ figured out what was going on, my dog was worked on low level stim. It finally put the e collar away for a few months and then reintroduced it as purely an aversive. That being said, finding an appropriate level for the situation is really challenging since there is so much history and habituation associated with the stim. I would like know how to better use it as an aversive given his personality and challenges, but struggle to find someone that knows how to use it skillfully and intelligently

Beautiful Dogs. I use e-collars on my boys. They get to run everyday. It's pure freedom. Their recall is great, except for one that can't help it when he sees an elk. He's getting better though. Do you know any trainers in New Mexico. I'm not a trainer, but I do my best and the e collar helps my boys to get good exercise everyday and safely.

Ivan would you be open to a conversation with a trainer like Robert Hynes or Dale McCluskey? They dispute the validity of the 4 quadrants and that they even originated with Skinner. Seems like that might be a more interesting debate than this silly “force free” topic. Beautiful video!

For me, bassiclly if a dog have a big prey drive, this is perfect. Dogs can get ruined without you knowing how to control it. Then you are in trouble and dog can get confused and miserable for life. Listen to this man, one of few who knows what he is talking about. Mr. Ivan, enjoy, we hope to see you in Europe in some big competition.

When you use the ecollar do you use mainly the vibrate or the pulse?? I have an ecollar that is not very high quality, the buzzing seems to work pretty well, but i'm afraid the pulse is a bit too strong. I would love some output on that

Hi Ivan, I'd be interesting in seeing you interview Emily Larlham (aka Kikopup). She has been able to train high prey drive dogs from chasing prey using force free methods. She has some videos discussing the situation with examples. I would include links to the video but I don't think KZfaq allows links

Hi. I have two very aggressive dogs. One is a spayed boxador and the other is an intact male made up from a 7-breed mix of bully breeds and German shepherd with Great Pyrenees. I would love to get some advice on which e-collar system might help these two. At present I have a lot of difficulty taking them outside together as they want to kill everything that they see pass by including vehicles and all animals and people. When separated I don’t have any problem and they are leashed at all times as I don’t have a fenced in yard yet. Thank you in advance , R. Montez
