I've had the same Shorai battery in my Sprint ST 1050 for about 15 years now. It has never left me stranded. Yes, I do have to warm it up when it's very cold, either by running the headlight and heated grips for a bit or just by cranking it for a while, but that's only when it's so cold that my original lead acid battery wouldn't start at all. I thought it had finally given up this winter and was ready to buy another one, but turned out that between remote work and having a second bike, it just wasn't getting charged as often and after a night on the tender it's happy again. Whenever it does die, I'm definitely buying another, and my other bike will also get one as soon as the oem battery gives me the first hint of trouble.

15 years? Unheard of.

@@ironhorsegladiator5034 it's an outlier, but it's around that age. The bike is a 2005 and I bought it new. Sometime around 2008, give or take a year, the oem battery let me down one too many times and I took a gamble on a lithium. I expect it to die any time now, but maybe it'll be like that one Edison bulb in the firehouse that's still working a century later, no idea. Either way, I've had plenty of time to get used to the quirks of a lithium battery and overall I find it a better tool for the job.

@@ironhorsegladiator5034 if it's Lithium iron phosphate that sounds about right, people hear Lithium and get pre-notions in thier heads based on lithium-ION. search aging wheels electric mower, he put used 13 year old Lithium Iron Phophate 4 batteries out of a prototype EV that haven't been charged in 8 years and they run laps around lead acid. it's disgusting that more people don't know about Lifepo4 and keep buying lead acid. Lifepo4 weigh 3/4 to 1/2 that of lead acid and puts out TWICE the run time (roughly). unlike other batteries after their ten year life span or maximum cycles (uses as in charge up and run downs) they just loose run time they don't die-dead. EDIT: also Lifepo4 has a VERY similar charge rate to lead acid. just don't go swapping out all of your boat or RV lead acids with only Lifepo4, they will suck the alternator dry if they are too low because they are capable of charging so fast. you need to parallel with a lead acid or two for that.

Great description. I recently put one in my 2017 KTM 690 Duke. But these batteries are not recommended for use with the old style potted rectifier/regulator on bikes like my 2002 Moto Guzzi V11 LeMans, as these rectifier/regulators can overcharge the LiFe batteries. The BMS equipped batteries might be able to handle this overcharging but I wouldn’t risk it.

You should be fine as long as it's a battery with a BMS since it can prevent the battery from being over-discharged. Assuming you put in LiFePO4 version, like an Antigravity, and it's cold out in the morning as you leave the hotel say 25-30 deg F, you can start it by leaving the lights on for few minutes. But as soon as the engine starts, the 32-56 amp alternator on the bike will charge the battery. LiFePO4 does not like to take a charge at below 32 deg F. It can damage them. Is that true? If so, they aren't a good idea unless you live in Florida?

I believe there is a Hugh difference lithium ion and lithium iron phosphate batteries. I don’t believe I heard you mention either by their proper name, other than the brief glimpse of the lithium ion label on the battery at the end of the video. Things like deep discharge, operating temperature, heat, and fire safety, are worth mentioning in a future video. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo) construction is a much better choice in all these areas. Perhaps this would help others to make a more informed choice, and remove some of the fears people have about the, often dangerous, using lithium ion batteries. Just my 3 cents.✌️

@jakegarrett8109 2 жыл бұрын
Charge it inside or when its warm. Normally (besides the first time you get a new battery) you won't be doing that, and once you start the bike, the engine heats everything up so its fine then. You definitely want LiFePo4 and not Li-ion, Li-ion doesn't have the right voltage per cell (closest is 11.1v nominal, or 14.8v nominal), so its either too low and would catch fire with standard vehicle charging circuit, or it would be severely below safe rating and would have both very little power and degrade quickly with too low of charged voltage. What you MIGHT be seeing is similar form factor sizes for SOLAR powered and other non-vehicle applications, because then yeah the voltage doesn't need to match lead acid so you won't have those issues.

Good question. We actually cover that in the video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jsmGnZxjm5jemps.html. Lead-acid chargers with "desulfation" and "float" modes can damage a lithium battery (most lead acid chargers have these modes). The voltage spikes and trying to constantly top off the battery is why they can damage a Lithium battery. If you have a charger that doesn't have either of those modes, then sounds good. If you need to buy a charger, you might as well buy the right one though. 🤷‍♂️ -Charles

Rediculous weight saving, like 3/4 the weight of an AGM or Lead. There's a double USB and 12 volt out let wired into the bike. Also run LED bulbs all around. Klr has no problems cranking or charging stuff. The battery came with multiple sized foam inserts and a couple sized steekers.✌

I should add this year the bike had seen multiple days from -10°C over night then rode to work and sat for 7 hours and rode home. Temps were around -2 to +10 during the day. No problems cranking. And a klr is a cold blooded thing requiring choke every start up for those hours of not in use.✌

As long as your bike is a model year 1980 or beyond and is in good working order, it will safely charge a lithium battery. A bike in good working order should recharge the battery at voltages between 13.4v and 14.6v and be safe for all current battery types (lead acid, AGM, Gel, Lithium).

I tried a Shorai in my BMW K1200LT back in 2011. At first things seemed pretty good other than Shorai used a nonstandard case size so I had to fill my battery box with foam shims which was a pain and the hold-down clamp did not fit the Shorai properly. The first Shorai died 8 months after I bought it because the Shorai BMS01 charger had a firmware flaw that didn’t allow the charger to come back on after a power failure. I didn’t notice that the charger had failed and the battery discharged so far it would not recover. Shorai replaced the battery under warranty and promised a firmware fix for their charger, but that never happened and they finally stopped replying to my inquiries about getting the charger fixed so it became a paperweight. The second battery had higher capacity, but still would not crank my LT fast enough to start it when the temp dropped below about 45 degrees. This was a real pain on a trip to Alaska. I either had to get someone to jump start my bike in the morning or I had to turn on the lights and wait 5-10 minutes for the battery to warm up enough to crank the engine. When that Shorai died after 8 years (decent life, I will give it that, but not when the cost is factored in), I went back to cheap AGM batteries that will start at my bike at 20 degrees (I tested that one morning last year in West Yellowstone), last 4-6 years and cost 1/3 what a Shorai costs. So, you all can have your lithium batteries. I was an early adopter and won’t buy another for a motor vehicle that needs to start reliability in PA where the morning temps are below 45 for about half the year.

@rmatvmc
@rmatvmc 18 күн бұрын
The biggest issue would be overcharging. Lithium batteries are very sensitive to overcharging. Which can result in the battery swelling or catching fire. This generally happens when the charger puts out a higher voltage than the battery can take while charging. A designated lithium charger can help maintain the life of the battery.

Car and motorcycle type batteries should not need or benefit from more cycle's. They are not supposed to be drained. A regular battery Will last a decade or longer. I doubt that lithium will. And unless it has internal heater's it will be useless or damaged in cool weather not to mention cold weather. How about under the hood of a vehicle in warm states. They don't like heat either. Regardless of the battery type draining it down will damage and reduce it's useful Life. I use lithium batteries in alot of things but, not vehicles. Cheers

Lithium is great in torches drills mowers hedge trimmers. But most of the advantages don't play out for starting engines. Many of the Li batts are designed to ONLY provide the minimum amps required to start the bike. The volume of Li battery required to start a bike is smaller than a lead / acid battery. Many of the Li batts either have part of their internal volume left empty or they include lots of foam blocks to make them fit. Therefore make sure to compare the weight of the different brands of battery (of you're size) before choosing one. The lighter brands of batteries have smaller cells inside. I always choose the heaviest battery available for my size of battery.

Those must be cheapo batteries with smaller than actual physical size. Pretty much any lithium battery has higher energy density (including LiFePo4), and I'm pretty sure volumetrically as well. You might have bought a half empty one (save weight and cost but still fit OEM application and work fine for 99% of people), because it should hold more energy than lead acid if its a solid battery.

Also most motorcycles that come from the factory with a lead acid battery have a voltage regulator that set for max 13.5 volts to charge the battery . A lithium battery takes a 14.5 volts to charge a 13 volt lithium battery so the lithium battery never gets a full charge so it doesn't have the listed cca because its now a full volt less . It doesn't matter how long you ride the bike is never going to put a full charge on the lithium battery . At 3:36 you said your motorcycle charges at 14 .5 volts . That is not true most regulators at the stator that come standard with lead acid battery are 13.5 volts max to charge a 12 volt battery that needs 13.5 volts to charge it . If it had a 14.5 regulator it would over charge the lead acid battery . Only bikes that come from the factory come with the correct regulator needed to charge the 13 volt battery . If you notice the lithium battery will say 13 volts not 12 volts like a lead acid battery does . You can use a lithium battery in a bike that has a 13.5 regulator but it will never put a full charge on the lithium . Look into this before you make a video saying your machine charges at 14.5 volts because that is just not the case if your motocycle comes with a stock lead acid battery . To prove this just put a tester on a started bike's battery terminals
