The EU has smartly regulated how many you can catch. Stocks are depleting as the freshwater pathways are blocked by dams and water plants. Efforts are slowly being made to reopen them. We have massive farms here (delicious delicacy in Nordic countries). But efforts to breed them in captivity have failed.

And those young eels travel thousands of miles from the ocean only to be stopped by an old dam deep in the woods nobody uses or maintains. In the spring you can see them exhaust themselves trying to climb an impassable barrier.

Eels were one of many species that were protected at an early 17th century wildlife sanctuary. Founded as a humble teaching hospital, animal hospital & rehabilitation clinic at the end of the Renaissance, by the middle Baroque period the sanctuary had acquired vast surrounding acreages included coastal waters & inland lakes. At the newly completed ornate Baroque style school & reception center, a group of visitors questioned their tour guide after seeing something that amazed them: These eels seemed intelligent, curious, even friendly. How did they get that way, so accustomed to humans, so smart.. was it because of years of kindness and care? In fact they all were trained & the original graduates of their Baroque Eel School program.

I saw y 1st Eel when I was 24. It was in a dirty fish tank on the bottom shelf in the back corner of a (at the time) local Aquatic Store, they specialized in salt water aquariums. (Anyway) I was bending down, my nose inches from the tank asking out loud "Why is this tank so dirty, is anything in it?' When on cue an Eel head popped out of the dark murky water nose to nose with me - SCARED THE &%$@ out:a me. I've been fascinated with Eel' (ever) since.

The Hudson has tons, and if you're fishing in it, you'd better watch it because you catch 'em on your line, and if you don't get them off fast, your line becomes so tangled.

1:40 If an eel is in fresh water, it is a female. The males don't migrate into fresh water. I caught a three-footer, a beautiful golden yellow creature, in a small mill pond in Clarke County, Mississippi while bass fishing. They roll and twist while fighting, taking up a lot of line.
