Been growing micros for three years. Funny that your top three least favorites are identical to mine and others I've talked to. Beets and chard are beautiful but such a pain to clean. Same with arugula though it has such a great flavor. And thanks for calling out Johnny's. Great people to deal with but the prices are just insane. Your book is a great read and love the videos. Thanks for what you do.

I think the stacking builds a stronger stem, also the pushing the seed into the medium motivates the germination. Nasturtium shoots can be harvested multiple times over a long time period like several months. I get my sunflower from mvseeds and other recent seeds that I grow is from johnny but the quality is very high and shipping is fast and cheap. I'm working on a video that I will put on a local cable tv station, I'll let you know when it goes live. I have shot lot's of video, now I have to put it together. I have some struggles with very fine seed to grow all the way to harvest, so it really isn't worth my time and space to continue to throw it in the compost. though then it may do very well in the compost. thanks

As far as second cuts, I run the tray soil through a soil shaker. The roots (such as they are) I give to my BSFL. DIY project, the soil shaker. Does take some sweat. The BSFL incubator is also DIY. I cycle back through organic certified soil from my local municipal government. I've learned that with three passes I need to remediate the recycled dirt with minerals. Mix them with the castings from my BSFL. I started buying Johnny's from an older video you did. Will check out the other folks

In Mark Braunstein's book, Micro Green Garden, Mark quotes Gilles Arbour and talks about buckwheat micro greens being toxic and dangerous for human consumption. He says buckwheat contains the pink coloured toxin fagopyrin. He says you can eat buckwheat sprouts though, because they are soaked and rinsed repeatedly. I've been growing micro greens for a few months now & we have found issues w/ the same seeds too. We've tried soaking beet & Swiss chard seeds in warm water for a few hours before seeding in trays helps a little bit to shed their seed coats, but any other tips would be welcome! We love how these ones look and would love to grow more of them! A fav of mine (although, not so much for taste) is Crimson clover. It is very resilient and easy-ish to grow. Wasabi radish smells divine when harvesting, but can be temperamental and prone to mildew. Generating enough interest, and demand all winter long, to justify the hydro bill is our first hurdle to overcome. But hopefully we'll get enough ppl hooked on them this next spring/summer to make it work!

I've looked and relooked through your videos where you talk about a product you add (some kind of nutrient solution or mold/fungus eliminator) to your microgreens and can't find it anywhere. You quickly mentioned it at the end of a video stating that it was about $300/bottle but worth the cost since you don't get any mold problems on your sunflower microgreens anymore. Can you reference this product again please? Thanks!

I put together a huge well planned out shelving / revenue response. Hit the wrong key. Lost it all. No worries it helped me organize my thoughts. But I will go back to my premise to ask you Curtis. Why not use simple five shelf plastic shelf you can stack at least three deep in your greenhouse. In mine a $400 investment is a 30 foot stand at five shelves each and each shelf holds three standard trays. Your greenhouse is compacted but I still think you could go for four deep.You have a lot of heavy wood stands that seem to hamper your maximal sun exposure. Every 30 foot run is five shelves per stand per 12 equals 180 trays. Four times is 720 trays. Given your greenhouse design you'd probably need to rotate. But is sure as heck would easily triple what I see in the video as max capacity.

Super excited to hear that Mumm's has more reasonable sunflower seeds than here in the US, cost is primary reason we have not grown them. However, if you go to their website and click the option at the top from Canada to down here, the price doubles? 1kg=$11.49 but 2.2lbs=$22.97 Thinking it must be an error so I have sent an email to clarify. Thank you sir for the much more cost effective option.

With the paper pot flats, I have noticed they work great for 7-10 day micros. Anything over 10 days, the roots grow through the holes, then end up dying and killing the micros. For stuff I plan to grow for 2-3 weeks like Basil and some of the mustards I've gone back to the 1020's. I am really looking forward to your Micro course in hopes it'll help expand what I am offering. Locally I've found there isn't much interest in the Big Three that you grow. I'm being asked for Basil, Fennel, and colorful brassicas. Just a different locality really, not an issue. I agree with you that Beets are a PITA, same as Fennel. I'll continue to offer it mainly because I'm a smaller production and have the time to comb it daily.

How do you find growing the basil? Thinking of trying it next year...
@ryanwillett728
@ryanwillett728 6 жыл бұрын
matthew clifford it’s not too tough. Density is key though. If you want to grow larger plants, which is usually desired, plant less dense. If you can sell the 7-10 size you can grow more dense. Keep air moving and use a 10x20 tray.
@matthewclifford5050
@matthewclifford5050 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply Ryan. I read you can get a second cut but also read basil germinates in 2 waves if you keep it in dark initially so I think that may explain the second cut "rumour". I was thinking of going with the lower density approach, longer growth period as seed is expensive in Ireland where i am based and iam eager to max return on that cost. What would you consider a good low density by weight for a 10x20?
@matthewclifford5050

Dear Curtis and everyone! I consider life with microgreens. I read that a lot of those gems and shoots give around twice the amout of yield than the amount of invested seed. Say 100g of peas will give 200g of pea shoots. That seems quite profitable to me. I wonder what happens to this calculation if the production of the seed is added. I mean obviously you buy seeds from mommys. I just wonder is it even more profitable to have a seed production for all these varieties of sprouts on side? what effort does that involve, is it worth it or is it better to focus purely on growing the last product in the chain. what are the pros and cons and so on... it is probably different for many plants because they give different amounts of seeds and use different kinds of procreation. If you consider this I wonder if it changes something on your list of "the three most profitable microgreens". thank you felix

Hey Curtis! I've ran into a problem with my black oil sunflower grow and was hoping you'd be able to help me out! I've done several different test runs both in 1020 flats and small pots, using different soil, soaking the seeds vs not soaking, etc.. I noticed a problem in several test runs on the soils surface. I'm picking out sunflowers that began growing roots and cotyledons, but the roots shriveled up and turned brown on the tip. They never made their way into the soil, and eventually died, even though my soil is very light and fluffy. I'm losing about half of the sunflowers that I planted due to this problem. I uploaded a picture here if that helps - imgur.com/a/fsX0knm Have you ever had this problem? Do you know what might be causing this to happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

I heard about it on the radio. Don't have an opinion on it.

"The incident took place at Windset Farms on 41 B St., where a number of people became ill while pressure washing inside a nursery, according to reports. Police believe poor ventilation may have caused a carbon monoxide build-up." Running an internal combustion engine inside a building without adequate ventilation is a known issue throughout construction, it sounds like the employees were incapable of determining that. Can't blame the farm, or it's equipment if the users of such are not intelligent enough to use it within established parameters.

The news story had the answer. CO is not good for plants, and lethal to humans. I have a propane heater but I vent the exhaust outside the greenhouse. I have a different problem - I have self-opening solar vents who get confused when the temp outside is frosty but the in the greenhouse is barely warm enough to grown microgreens.

Ryan Willett I recall Curtis started using a fungicide on sunflower sprouts. There must be other mitigating facts. I also recall outdoor amaranth microgreens seem to work.

now farmers sell 25kg worth of sun flower seeds for $35, but mumms sell for 20xs more, why don't you use theirs?

10kg bag of organic sunflower seed is $62 CAD from Mumms. That's cheap and good quality.

that's true. I haven't questioned if their sunflower seeds here are organic or not though.

Good grief. Touching and wiping your nose and then touching your product. That is a cardinal sin. Don't 'experts' ever take basic classes in 'hygiene'? E Coli outbreak, here I come.
