I live in Nazare.. on Tuesday a local farmer brings her vegetables and fruit to our street 5-6 euros buys romaine lettuce, 4 tomatoes, 2 bulbs of garlic, 4 onions, 7kg potatoes, 2-3 sweet potatoes, large cauliflower, seasonal fruit, 10 large carrots...if I need anything during the week the municipal market is perfect...

I love your channel, thank you so much for all of the work you put into it. I have never commented, but I just saw the last bit and I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog. Dogs are so special. We are planning on moving out of the US, but frankly our large 80 pound rescue pups have us on pause. They are older and want them to have an awesome life. We have time to travel on once they pass. Have a list of places to explore from your videos when I'm in Porto next month!

Thanks for the love and recognizing how much work goes into these videos. Thank you for the comment. We really appreciate it. It was certainly hard and emotional but we're good. Each day gets better. We knew he wasn't in great health for the past 6 months despite his vet visits going well. It's been a lot easier to travel since he's passed. We can pack whenever we want without worrying about giving him anxiety and we don't have to exhaust our list of house sitters. Have a great time exploring Porto! - Josh & Kalie

For a working Portuguese person the prices are still too high. We also have to spend a lot of money on gas, because not everybody lives in a city with buses and the tube. For example I'm a teacher and if I didn't had a car I couldn't work.

Thanks for another great video. I remember about two years ago when Lisa and I first got the wild idea that we might want to retire early and move to Portugal, we watched your 2021 "every penny tracked" video (or whatever it was called) and it was a huge boost to us. We knew then that we would, in fact, actually be able to make it work financially with what we had saved. That's when we put our plans into high gear. And here we are 12 1/2 months in to our new life in Portugal and it has been just as you show in your videos. The real deal. What a great year it's been here in Matosinhos (sorry we missed the meetup, but it was great to see our neighborhood make a cameo in the video). Sick of the rain, though (last Spring was dry by comparison). Our Bolt budget has expanded as well as a result, lol.

Ubers are stupidly cheap in Portugal. It's almost as if they don't factor in the driver's time. I quite often double the tip for short trips. The drivers will tell you it's hard to make a profit, which is not surprising.

Cia is adorable. I really found this video helpful. I keep reading and hearing that Porto is so unaffordable now. I think that would be the rent there, because I hear that it is hard to find a place to live. Many places there now are Air B and B's.I am sorry to hear about the loss of you dog. That is always really hard. Big abrazos from Colorado.

Hi Josh and Kalie! I watched many of your videos before moving to Porto. I came from Brazil, so while some US-specific advice wasn't applicable, most of the content was a big help! I've lived here with my wife and two dogs for almost two years, and we were in the Porto vs. Arsenal game, too! I think we might even live somewhat nearby, as I've seen Kalie with Valencia a few times on the street we live on. So, first of all, thanks for all the help! But I also wanted to leave this message because, after a while of not watching your videos, I decided to "catch up" a little bit, and I was wondering about Pincho, who was always so friendly and cute in the videos. My two dogs are getting old (14 and 16), and the older one is having a lot of health issues, so this subject makes me extra sad nowadays! I'm genuinely sorry for your loss. It's always hard, and we never really "move on," we move forward with the pain but also with the good memories that are irreplaceable and more than worth it. I'm sure you have many of these. On another note, it was great seeing how much Valencia has grown and how good she is with Portuguese already! Here's to good memories, friends, family (human and "fur"!), and community! Fiquem bem.

When I visited Lisbon I went to the municipal market(s). The variety was amazing and outside of it there was a farmers market with less expensive produce. I planned meals based on what was available for that day. Besides the produce there was vendors for fish, cheese, meat, eggs, chicken and duck, flowers and a couple of restaurants. The catch is you have to come early in the morning to get what you need by noon. The earlier the better. I could also sharpen my Portuguese speaking skills. I think it was only 5-6 blocks away in Cascais. It was an easy switch to change to the European/Portuguese mode of living. If you get a chance, please do show the markets around Porto. Thank you

Hi Josh & Kalie, I love seeing your informative COL videos! It highlights the fact that living in PT really offers good value for money despite inflation. You sure have the most gracious landlord and a sweet deal on rent. Is there a preference for Uber over Bolt (which seems to be the more reasonable option)? Lastly I was wondering about the littlest member of your family and I’m truly sorry about Pintxo’s departure 😢. As always, thank you for delivering great and reliable content.
@ExpatsEverywhere

Hi Georg, thanks for the love. ❤️ We tend to have promotions on Uber and their prices seem to be less dynamic than Bolt. Bolt might have lower starting prices when conditions are normal but when rain hits or something, they're quick to raise their rates. Pincho hadn't been moving well for about 6-12 months so there wasn't much to film of him. Thanks again for the message. - Josh & Kalie

Thanks for the video! 2 questions, what do you use to quickly get Cia in and out of Ubers, like what kind of car seat? 2. Is she wearing a beanie after her swim session, or is that a comfy looking swim cap?? My 5 year old has long hair but doesn’t like the swim cap so trying to find something else lol. As a family of 3, we spend 6400 a month in a med sized town in the US SE (tho it is a tourist town) and it’s unsustainable!

We have a booster seat, but most Ubers have them and you can book a car that has it. That's a swim cap. Most indoor pools from our experience require it. With the same budget here, you could do so much! All the best. Thanks for the comment. - Josh & Kalie

If one is type 2 diabetic, do aspects of the Portuguese lend itself to low glycemic carbohydrate diet? Can you buy "keto" type breads made from coconut or almond flour? Are stevia and monk fruit sweeteners available at reasonable prices?

@ExpatsEverywhere
@ExpatsEverywhere 2 ай бұрын
Yes, the coffees are around €3 each but the kilo of coffee which is like 4 standard bags is the bulk of the price. Think of it like paying €15 per bag of specialty coffee, which is a pretty common price nowadays. The first is that when we post on a Saturday, we are usually out and about living life offline with our daughter. We try our best either on Saturday evening (like right now) or Monday to get to the questions that came in over the weekend. After 48 hours or so, we're on to the next video and trying our best to prepare that one and depending on the nature of the comment and if we see it, we'll respond.
