We're at the Rothwell estate in Lincolnshire on the last day of January - the final day of the woodcock season and penultimate day of the pheasant season. Jason Doyle was last seen in educational mode with Carly Coates, but here he takes centre stage for himself, taking on the testing back-end birds on the estate's legendary keepers' day.

Bit of a shame to see the Hares being shot because we dont have them around here anymore but good to see somewhere they are still doing strong. Great video.

Sad to see the hare being shot. It is rather shocking that we continue to shoot them in such numbers despite them being one of the most endangered animals in Britain. Even more shocking when you realise they are the only game species not to have a close season. It is time to have a serious discussion on how this activity reflects on shooting as a whole. We defend our sport by arguing that shooting goes hand in hand with conservation- this defence is totally undermined every time a hare is shot.

Great shooting Jason... just a quick question ..what barrel do you use 28" 30" or 32" when on a game shoot Jason ? Regards Steve ..

Stephen Richardson my preference is 32" for all my shooting but I'm happy enough to use 30" for game. Struggle a bit with 28" now that I've spent so long using longer barrels.

Woodcock with No4 38g really? Hens also on the last day ? Not sure that would sit well with most keepers.

Multi mates 2005 it isn't for the protection. If you look closely the lens is tinted. They make the targets brighter and easier to see.

Multi mates 2005 I wear them for two reasons, first is for safety, if you've ever had a pellet drop on you it can really hurt and would do serious damage to your eye if hit. The other is to help with the light conditions on the day.

Thanks Jason, It looks very easy to use less thumbing around trying to slide cartridges form the leather belt loops.

6:53.....of course you struggled. You were shooting a heavy O/U in 12 bore! My SxS is 2.9kg. and throws 28gm. of shot as well as yours, if not better because it is a 16 bore. Oversquare load for the bore and such. But you younger crowd must always have the newest and best kit for the money. You learn nothing from history. Later on you used a real shell for Pheasants,....1 1/4 oz. of shot. For looong range......since you have 3in. chambers, I would have gone to 1 5/8 or 1 3/4 oz. of shot. 44 or 49 grams of shot. Semi-brutal in recoil, but it stops those high and long flying birds. But then again, 16 bore was not really used that much on your shores. Continental shooters still use the 16. Here in the US, it fills a niche market. Us older shooters that remember our fathers and grandfathers guns remember the game they brought home with them. The old saying was:....'Hits like a 12, but carries like a 20.' I may own 5 12s, one 20, and 3 16s, but when I need to shoot fast and instinctively,...........I go to the 16 bore. When I need massive shot weight, I go to my Ithaca Model 100 SxS by SKB. Not my Antonio Zoli or my Franchi Falconet or my 870 Wingmaster or my 1100 Auto. Ducks may be for the 870 or 1100. Maybe the Zoli if over decoys. Franchi is for wild Pheasants out West (six pound O/U 12 bore!). Or the Model 100 Ithaca if I don't have to walk more than a couple of miles. Quail, Woodcock, and Ruffed Grouse are the dominion of my Fox Sterlingworth in 16 bore. The Fox and my Ithaca NID in 16 bore get used for game farm birds. My 20 bore was my grandfathers and does not get used. Maybe you only have one gun because of cost and expenditures to your household. I'm fine with that. But at least learn to shoot that weapon well. Dave Carrie does extremely well in his shooting. He favors Browning for his guns. But remember this: He has only one eye. I bet I could give him my Sterlingworth and after a couple of misses, he would hit everything that passed over him, just like he always does. It's the nut behind the recoil pad and not the gun. But you can get to a point with a certain weapon, if you train enough with it, that it becomes an extension of your eye. Where the eye looks, the shot column follows. Sorry, .....just an old windbag from the States watching these videos. I finally got a quality SxS for hunting over there, and I am almost priced-out of the hunting that I would like to do. Then you have those antis trying to shut-down Grouse hunting. Time and money came to me too late it seems.

Love the show but the host (not Jason) has the most irritating; robotic voice. 'Welcome to the shooting shurrrr'. Grates at my nerves.
