30 days ago I watched this video and I wanted to leave a nasty comment for “scooping tip”. I held back and went out and try it for myself. At first, it work ok but I was still fighting the old lead hand drag. After 15 mins I started to use my right hand to push forward like skipping a rock. After 3 days doing this, my buddy noticed I wasn’t chunking my chip. All my chip with a 52* was about 40 yards nice and high landed soft. For 3 years I tried to break 80 and for some reason...this crazy tip got me over the hump. I wish I found this tip 10 years ago, would have saved me years of practice. Sir, from the bottom of my heart thank you for this tip

I don't think it's a true scoop cause you're doing it intentionally...a true scoop is when your rotation is bad you grt stuck and you HAVE to throw your angle away...this is different, although it's probably the.same.scooping motion, I think you're just releasing earlier than on a full iron shot

I’m going over all this older material from Monte. Honestly after watching all of the instructors that you’ve been showing us over the years, Monte gives the best swing theories and mindset to me. Kinda wish you just would’ve stuck with Monte and let these lessons evolve a tad bit more. After working on the swing and trying different swings. I understand what he is teaching now. It’s a little mind boggling because it seems counterintuitive to what other instructors tell you, but what he says makes soooo much more sense now!

Out of frustration with this shot (short pitch) years ago, I gave up and just swung the clubhead, like Monte is showing here. Then I discovered it not only works for pitches, but a bunch of situations requiring very low punches (as in tree recoveries), short spinners, 3/4 knockdowns, greenside chipping, and even high flops. And it can be learned in literally a couple minutes, because you already know how, subconsciously. After that you're just fine tuning feel for the varied shot selections, lies, distances, etc. That, well yes that, will take some time...

This natural releasing of the right wrist throught the shot is also perfect for driving the ball with your driver, it encourages a good release and allows you to hit up on the ball through impact(key for big drives), just watch David Duval's right wrist post impact with the driver. Duval actually says to improve his driving he practices his pitching action, just the same way Monte is describing in this video.

This is great instruction as usual from Monte. I've been following you for years and this "flipping" at the ball has allowed me to kick my buddies @$$ now. I've incorporated this in my full swing all the way to the driver and my release is incredible and distance has improved as well. Awesome stuff and yes i do owe you some money for these lessons. Trying to flip the club from the top somehow causes the hips to naturally move out of the way...crazy but it works.
@wx811
@wx811 5 жыл бұрын
I do this naturally. It's just the proper way to pitch. Holding it off like hinge and hold tends to be manipulated and forced. One thing is the "flip" isn't a flip, it's a release. Actually, you have shaft lean on a proper pitch, but afterwards it releases because of the clubhead's weight, not because you "flip" it. Short game is all feel. Get feel down along with basic technique and you'll be fine

Once you start opening up the face you have to be at the top of your game to judge/control distance, and your usually under the most pressure when you try this shot! The 60 deg wedge whilst hard to master vastly reduces the need for open face shots which is why a lot of big hitting pros have a reasonable short game

I love Monte's simplicity. It's basically feel golf. I see more and more teachers going this route and I'm glad. We've all been wasting so much time with technical mechanics. We need to get back the old ways of the old days. Technology is great but it has invented a new game called "aesthetically pleasing swing". We need to get back to "get the ball in the hole in the least amount of shots".

This is great advice! I have struggled a lot in the past year with long and short game, the problem was being too steep (holding the lag) with every club in the bag , I'm pretty sure it came from trying to hinge and hold on pitch shots and as a result it destroyed my game. It was very gradual at first I noticed a loss in distance then eventually I was hitting fat, thin and shanks! Now I just work on being shallow with everything it is so much more consistent. The key is don't manipulate!

I really like this video and thank you. This should help me become more consistent with my pitching distances. I have always been very steep with my wedges and never know how far they will go ie. 50 yards or 5 yards? The only problem I am having with your new technique is I tend to blade a lot of shots like low line drives? What am I doing wrong? I have ball position off forward heel. I try to take a 90 degree wrist cock but still sculling them? Maybe I am swinging to hard or not watching the ball? Not sure? Thanks!!

Is that hold off the Phil mickelson “hinge and hold” move? Also sounds like you don’t like Bobby Clampett and I get that but for bad players like I was, his point to aim to the left of the ball and focus on impact and contact was helpful at the time.

When golfers learn to ignore all the crap the main stream PGA pros are telling them and just feel the weight of the club with a light grip and their own natural swing movement, the result will automatically be what you are teaching here. This goes for putting all the way to a full swing. Good job here, golfers will do very well to listen to you and apply this technique everywhere in their golf game.

Monte, this swing thought helped me. See if you agree: both arms come down at the same speed. The tendency is for the right arm to speed past the left hand. When I think of both arms going the same speed through impact, my contact is much more consistent. The left arm stays in front of the right arm, because both arms go the same speed.

I was lucky enough to have a lesson with Dan Grieve (coach to Charley Hull) a few weeks ago. I have never been too good with pitches - 6 hcap - and I know it's where I can make a big difference. Monte's explanation is spot on and the technique he describes is the same as Dan taught me. It's taking some time to bed in, but like Brendan, I've been doing it wrong for too long. Shallow hit with a "minivan" acceleration is key for me. I think Andrew Rice recommends a smash factor as close to 1.0 for these type of shots. Perhaps Trackman/Flightscope should rename smash factor speeds as "minivan", "SUV", "sports car" etc!Looking forward to many more videos with Monte :)

What I like about this pitching philosophy is that you're in essence doing a "mini" full swing - which means when you're working on your pitch shots, you're also working on your full swing which is great! If I'm interpretating this right....

It’s not flipping , after impact it’s flowing through with momentum , when you toss the ball your flipping without thought , the club is creating a flip through inertia , this is gold Monty 👍 through impact it is solid and down through the ball , not steep using the bounce

What Monty is showing is just how its done. I was at the 2016 PGA on the range watching Danny Willett. He was working on finishing the shot just like Monty shows at 14:36. He would hold the finish and then check his post shot position. He had a camera recording this and went back to view how it looked.

this is pitching with the bounce of the club, which has more margin of error. You will get softer and higher shots. This shots should not produce much of a divot either, you are just trying to clip the grass (or as they mentioned - feel like you are hitting up on it). If you add some speed from 40+ yards out, you can really get some zip on this shot. Shorter shots will release a little more. The other method referred to is chipping with the leading edge of the club. It requires the ball be back in your stance and you squeeze the ball against the ground. The shot comes out lower. I also find that it requires less room for error on longer shots. Around the green for chipping is okay, but not ideal for longer shots as compared to using the bounce.

Kelly Miller Monte keeps reiterating thru out his video about keeping the right arm (RH golfer) moving. When you stall the right arm, that's when you chunk and blade the ball. Most people tend to stall the right arm which results in a 'jabby' motion hence the dreaded blade across the green.
@BEBETTERGOLF

I'm a right-handed in life but leftie in golf. When I'm trying this it feels more natural to use my right (front) arm. When I throw a ball or flip a stone over a sea surface my right arm is a bit better than the left . However when I slapshoot in hockey feels is more natural to have the club on my left. I feel awkward using my left (rear hand) in your pitch drill. Do you have any suggestion to me on how I should drill in "The short game secret" regarding left and right.

It’s funny because the Steve Stricker/Jason Day approach has helped my short game more than anything. I much prefer to feel no hinge and just rock my shoulders like a putt. Just allow the bounce of the club to do the rest. You can even hit 1-2 inches behind it with that method and still be ok because the wedge slides underneath it. It’s incredible. But I do agree that ball in back of stance and trying to trap it is wrong approach. And fwiw I use Cleveland CBX2s.

great technique in general but it doesn't really help me on the course i play unless i happen to land on decent grass, we have a lot of loose dirt that gets in the way of the clubface and ball so the bounce technique doesn't really work unless you want to catch it inconsistant alot.

i use a 62 degree with lower bounce way more, and yeah, back of stance a little more and try to get ball first contact. But we get a LOT of differant lies, Also forced to play way more bump and runs with like an 8 iron around the greens as the lies are just terrible. so i use the bounce quite a bit still, but i don't think it works on all lies, the sandy type tight lies it fails miserably as mentioned the sand gets in between the ball and club and it just dies and goes nowhere.. If i played on nice grass all the time i wouldn't do anything but use the bounce technique

Understand the theory, but you're not necessarily going to be steep just because your stance is open. You're going to _tend_ to be steep if your hips are as open as your feet, and especially if your shoulders are wide open. But that doesn't follow just from an "open stance." People don't understand the point of an open stance in the short irons and short game in the first place. It's really a matter of pre-setting the lower body more like where it would be if the swing were fuller or the club longer and the swing slightly flatter. In other words, it's a pre-clearing of the legs, and for some people, to a lesser extent, a square-to-slightly open pre-clearing of the hips, so you don't have to make a big move with the lower body on the shorter shots. You should _not_ have feet, hips, and shoulders all pointing radically left. Ideally, at impact you'd have the lower body slightly open and the upper body squarish (slightly open or slighly closed is OK). But if everything is aiming way left at address, and you play the ball well back, then yeah, you're going to tend to hack downward at it, in part because you're hitting it behind yourself.

I absolutely agree with you. The pre-clearing of the legs makes just so much sense to me ... and the shoulders ofc square, to hit target. I once have seen Brett Rumford doing this, copied it and never regretted it since :-) (Getting steep is from ball poz too far back and/or excessive wrist hinge.)
@garrettnobles8956
@garrettnobles8956 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Short game is all about creating steeps and shallows. The ball in the back of the stance is a big steep. Monte in other videos where he shows this secret move creates a steep pushing the hands forward then creates a swallowing motion with a bit of a flip. Is it wrong? Meh, its following that basic concept but the hinge point is something you have put time into mastering. Best wedge player in golf? Jordan Spieth. no pivot point, more steeps than shallows, great control, high high spin. Different strokes for folks and all.

the problem with this is that its fine with the right hand. however a lateral swipe with the left hand is the temptation and that is not right. It took me a long time to cock the left hand in the correct way. Monty knows the golf swing. That guy is lucky to have one on ones.

I think you are not fighting the "momentum" of the golf club, not the inertia.

Bobby Clampett does not teach a 50-yard pitch anything like you just demonstrated. He encourages shaft lean, which every great short game player has. You can have shaft lean and still be shallow.

I hate when someone says "if you knew anything about _____ you would have done x". As if the only thing between a bogey golfer and a tour player is knowelge and practice! WRONG. There is a thing callled talent and most don't have it. Having said that many touring pros would be horrible teaching pros! People need to understand the diffrence...Monte is probably ten times better teaching golf than playing championship golf...so what!

In sand or thick grass, the hands should follow through. Shorten backswing and accelerate through. Phil Michelson said that.
