Although it has now become a bit of an urban legend, the song was not done in one take, but that in no way diminishes Mercury's accomplishment. It was the critical high note that he hit in one take. I lived through the height of the AIDS epidemic and buried many friends. At this time in the late 80s/early 90s, there was no cocktail to stop the virus' progression, no way to relieve the suffering. It was a horrifically painful and agonizing death in slow motion. By this point in Mercury's stage of the disease, most people could barely get from their bed to the bathroom without collapsing from exhaustion. That he was able to be in the studio, let alone hit the notes he did, is nothing short of superhuman. He was and remains, the consummate showman. There will never be another like him.

The Show Must Go On is like an emotional rollercoaster for me, same with Innuendo. It's so powerful, heartbreaking, defiant and honest. As soon as the intro starts my throat tightens with sadness and has done since 1991. For Fred to be singing about his own mortality and internal heartbreak, makes it spine chillingly brave, tragic and devastating. There will never be another Freddie and the world is a far sadder place without him. 💔 Vocally no one can touch him, not then, not now.👑

"The Show Must Go On" is written by Brian. It's one hell of a statement on the last album released while he was alive, but not his words. "Innuendo" is written by Freddie. *That's* his statement about his ambivalence about dying.

I totally agree... all he wanted to do in his final months/weeks/days was to create as many vocals as he could manage. He was throwing back the vodkas on 'These are the Days of Our Lives' and 'I'm going slightly mad' according to Roger (who he had a special bond with) I remember the exact time and place where I was when I found out the news. I was 20... I was devastated. I listened to their final CD Innuendo for ages. I have done the same with Bowie... Blackstar is a true masterpiece. 2016 and 2020 can bloody disappear from calendars as far as I'm concerned!

Based on info from Wikipedia about this legendary song: The song chronicles the effort of Freddie Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life, although his diagnosis with HIV/AIDS had not yet been made public in spite of ongoing media speculation claiming that he was seriously ill. Mercury was so ill when the band recorded the song in 1990 that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it. Recalling Mercury's performance, May states; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' - vodka down - and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal".

Can’t wait to watch later. I’ll add my background contribution. According to Brian: When it was time to record the track (the show must go on), Freddie could barely stand. ‘I said, “Fred, I don’t know if this is going to be possible to sing,”’ Brian told Rolling Stone. And he went, “I’ll fucking do it, darling” -vodka down -and went in and killed it.’ Freddie would not talk about his illness, but he was putting it out there in the music. ‘Songs like “The Show Must Go On”, in my case, or “These Are the Days of Our Lives’, in Roger’s case, were things that we gave to Freddie as a way of him working through stuff with us,’ said Brian. ‘The Show Must Go On’ did not stint on the drama or the directness of its message.

The weird thing thing was at the time Freddie was dying his voice was in the best shape of his life, hitting high notes left and right! Reasons for that might be: Freddie stopped smoking after his AIDS diagnosis, Queen stopped touring 1986 so no constant gigs anymore, Freddie (who never had vocal training) worked around 1987/88 with opera singer Montserrat Caballe and she might've showed him some vocal techniques.
@annieanonymous611

Do you think? Roger mentioned in the Queen documentary that you can hear that he had a voice that was ailing and you can hear that. If you compare his 1989 onwards voice to his voice from the Hot Space Era in the early 80's for example, you can hear he sadly lost some the richness of tone and his voice was thinner - very noticeable on Headlong. Still though, even with his voice in the late 80's/early 90's he sang better than most singers out there then and now!

From Wiki, because I love the story. The Show Must Go On" featured as the twelfth and final track on their 1991 album Innuendo. It is credited to Queen, but written mainly by Brian May.[2] The song chronicles the effort of Freddie Mercury continuing to perform despite approaching the end of his life, although his diagnosis with HIV/AIDS had not yet been made public in spite of ongoing media speculation claiming that he was seriously ill.[3] Mercury was so ill when the band recorded the song in 1990 that May had concerns as to whether he was physically capable of singing it. Recalling Mercury's performance, May states; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling' - vodka down - and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal".[4]. It was further noted in May’s interview that “one-take” was all Freddie had the energy to do. Just posting what I’ve read and saw in the interview BUT, I wasn’t there.

My thoughts on this album... As a lifelong fan, I started seeing them in concert from Sheer Heart Attack until they stopped touring the US in '82. Clearly you had to see Freddie live to truly appreciate just how good he was. When he passed, I fell to pieces. I had only cried when Lennon was killed, until Freddie was gone. This album, I remember seeing those videos, and oh my God, he was gravely ill..... One has to remember that he was on his death bed during these recordings. His friends would sometimes help him stand at the microphone. When all was said and done, Freddie had delivered an album full of vocal performances for the ages, and sealed EASILY what was one of Queen's BEST albums. No filler. A true masterpiece. Now, all that said, from this album, give, HEADLONG, a listen ... Freddie kicks ass.

Such an underrated bass player. And Fred's vocals, holy shit. One of his best performances, if not, the best. I love your reactions, as always. It's been a while since I reacted, but I am still a huge fan of your channel. Keep on rockin'! (By the way, from the same album: check out the title track Innuendo and the song Don't Try So Hard. SonicVolcano - Deaky's bass was always incredible, not to mention his songwriting. Some of his best know riffs like "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Under Pressure" are technically very simple while others like Millionaire Waltz are stunningly complex ...BUT...the point is, he always knew exactly what worked for any given song. Queen made a very wise choice in picking him to join the band. Freddie's vocals are amazing but even more so is the fact that he didn't just give up and wait to die but pumped out every last vocal with all of his heart until he could no longer do so, both to give himself purpose and out of love for his craft and his fans. Innuendo and what followed were wonderful albums.

There have been a handful of music critics/listeners/song breakdowners etc who have said the vocal delay harmony section on "The Prophets Song" are more intense than those in "Bo-Rap". I'm biased because the former was always more of a favorite than the latter. Incredible and heavy tune.

Truth is: those latter-era, '90s Queen albums RARELY get the respect they deserve. ...even as a massive fan, I have to say: I was (unfairly) paying less attention to them and doubting their abilities. -There is NO comparison for the INDELIBLE immensity and magnificence of '70s QUEEN! ...but that shouldn't lead ANYone to believe that: The rest of their work isn't filled with the same dimension and capacity (just: affected by: the times, development and experimentation/investigation) as the earlier masterpieces. 🤘 [Never attempt to compare the two, though. No.] ...They went for a "rockier" sound in the latter half of the '80s and they, certainly, had a few slips, but... They maintained their brilliant song=writing, charismatic performances and density of sonic assault, right through until the end. 👍👍🧡😥🧡💜❤

I believe the way this went down, according to reports, Brian asked Freddie something like "Are you sure you'll be able to sing this?" Freddie took his shot of vodka, and said "I'll f**king do it, darling." 😁 That voice is of a man who was extremely sick, wasn't going out in public anymore, just barely had the energy to get out of bed to record for a few hours a day, and he KILLED IT.

Their "Made In Heaven" album - released after Freddie passed - was exactly what it says it is. Freddie recorded LOTS of vocals on LOTS of songs, because he knew he was dying. "Innuendo" was the last album they released before Freddie's death. "Made in Heaven" was released after Freddie's death. And the vocals on that album are even MORE amazing than the vocals on "Innuedndo".

It's an incredible performance from the entire band. Especially Freddie. Everyone knew that he had little time left , at the time. Kept secret from the public, for all the right reasons. You can hear that Freddie's is shallower than previously recorded. Didn't stop him making one of Queen's best songs. Aren't the choruses so great to hear. Old school Queen. And a rather unwell man still hit notes most male singers could never attempt. Reduced me to tears today.

Demo versions featured May singing, having to sing some parts in falsetto because they were too high. When Brian May presented the final demo to Mercury, he had doubts that Mercury would be physically capable of singing the song's highly demanding vocal line, due to the extent of his illness at the time. To May's surprise, when the time came to record the vocals, Mercury consumed a measure of vodka and said "I'll fucking do it, darling!" then proceeded to perform the vocal line.[4] May sang most of the backing vocals (including the very last line) and played Korg M1 synthesiser as well as guitar. Producer David Richards suggested the key-shift in the second verse. "The Show Must Go On" came from Roger and John playing the sequence, and I started to put things down. At the beginning, it was just this chord sequence, but I had this strange feeling that it could be somehow important, and I got very impassioned and went and beavered away at it. I sat down with Freddie, and we decided what the theme should be and wrote the first verse. It's a long story, that song, but I always felt it would be important because we were dealing with things that were hard to talk about at the time, but in the world of music, you could do it.[6] - Brian May - 1994

Great reaction to an even more incredible song!! The power of the song, especially Freddie's vocals, is unsurpassed (and as mentioned, he was on death's door and STILL gave that kind of performance!) Loved this track from the moment I heard it in 1990 (parents got me Innuendo for Christmas, and I played the crap out of the whole album) If you want another track off that album that shows the emotion that Brian puts to his guitar, check our Bijou. The guitar is basically doing the versus, Freddie's vocals provide the middle-8 chorus. HIGHLY recommend The Prophet's song (so Alex can hear the 'proggy-est' nature of Queen, and definitely Innuendo (again, another proggy masterpiece) Queen is tops in my book.
