Today I am ranting about the side effects of spaying a female dog. I originally did this video talking about Milton, thinking it did not affect Herky (I don't know why I don't remember this!). But turns out, after looking at photos... that it affected Herky just as much.
What do you think? Did this happen to you too?
Thanks for watching :)

With my girl the only change was that she couldn't reproduce anymore. Her personality and coat are the same and her weight has remained at the right spot for her size. She's 12 years old now and still a little devil in a love bug disguise.

What year or months should spay female and male puppy??? Thanks for your reply
@UnluckyOctopus
@UnluckyOctopus 3 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferdayao1456 I have had fixed as young as 12 weeks. There are debates however on this and I am not a vet. I find it much easier to do it as early as possible. The puppy typically won’t even need to wear a cone and seem to heal much faster with less complications in my opinion and the vet’s I use opinion. Dogs can father or mother puppies at 6 months of age, so ideally they will be fixed before then. Once male dogs reach that point even after fixing they will still have a drive to hump. I also suspect that female dogs will feel a lack of purpose by not fulfilling their natural instincts to reproduce. The best thing to do though is talk to your vet on what’s best for you and your puppy. Just like with human babies everyone online will have their own opinion and try to convince you it’s the best and only one to have.

Removing the dogs ability to produce natural hormones DEFINITELY affects their entire body and personality. Hip dysplasia, bone and joint issues, weight gain, some dogs lose hair, and their personality changes all due to the removal of their female organs. I will NEVER, EVER alter another dog. My female ultimately died due to some issues that were a direct result from altering her. The veterinarian who treated her until her death explained that some dogs, male and female, should never be altered. In the UK, there are multiple studies that show dogs who are altered have multiple health and skeletal issues. Here in the US it is common practice to spay and neuter very young dogs. In the future, if pet owners will do their research and put pressure on the veterinary practice, this will become known as one of the most unnecessary surgeries. Just a few decades ago, doctors would routinely perform hysterectomies on women because they said they were "hysterical" or "out of control". The doctors claimed that it would calm women down. Just think about that for a minute.

@@johannaandyoshi BTW my vet, a 30 something female, has advised me not to spay my new addition to the family unless it's a medical necessity. She said vet's were previously taught to spay before the first heat, but have now discovered that it impacts the health of the dog very badly. I'm so happy I found this vet because she believes in many things other vets do not. CBD is a great product for helping our dogs in so many ways. She advised me to get some calming CBD for my male dog during my female's heat cycle. She said it will help to calm him. Also, there are several topical things you can apply to your female to mask the pheromones. I also read about something to apply to the nose of the male so it prevents him from smelling the pheromones, but I haven't yet tried it. I rub Vicks vaporub on my females rear and apply it to her nappies. That helps!

The change in coat is more a feature of age than spaying. I have male and female dogs. I have a Ruby boy and black/tan girl. Have had tricolor in the past. It’s pretty amazing when a cavaliers coat “blossoms” into their adult coat! Just another wonderful thing to look forward to with our cavalier fur babies. I enjoy this channel and I love my Radley and Roxie! They are half brother and sister. Same dad. It’s a good thing that you got message out there about luxated patellas. Very common in small dogs but dogs with this condition should not be bred, as it is hereditary. Some dogs require surgical fix, while others just need to be monitored. It’s also a good idea to have steps going up to sofas and beds and teach your small dogs to use them. It is especially important to teach them to go DOWN the steps as this is where knee issue is most crucial. Also keep weight off and lots of exercise to keep joints and hearts healthy. Walking in sand is very good for knees as it builds muscle around the knee. Kudos to Mai for spreading the word on common health concerns in cavaliers. Most folks just think they are cute, sweet dogs and are not aware they can have significant and expensive health issues. They are delightful dogs to have but anyone who wants a dog like this needs to seriously research pet insurance because it can cost many thousands of dollars to keep them healthy. These dogs require more than just yearly shots and spaying and neutering. Even the best bred cavaliers can develop heart and joint issues. Then there are eye, ear and SM issues as well. It is almost a guarantee that a cavalier will develop one or more health issue. These health problems start when they are young as well. For those of us that love our CKC’s, they are worth it.

Milton looks beautiful with more fur. Both of my Cavaliers were spayed by the time they were a year old and slowly grew more flowing fur. It’s a lot of work maintaining their fur, but it’s worth it. I love all of the feathering. I’ve heard that it’s normal for some weight gain after spaying. Cavaliers in general tend to gain weight easily so I’m careful with my dog’s diet. I also read that it takes some Cavaliers 4 years to get all of their full coat with feathering. To me, it’s one of their most beautiful traits. Sounds like Milton is just growing and filling out as she should. Both she and Herky are very beautiful pups. ❤️

We just met with the vet last week (we live in Germany), and unless the dog is sexually frustrated or aggressive we were strongly recommended not to castrate. The vet said it is almost certain the coat will change but also there are recent studies showing that castration could be linked to joint problems. I'm American living in Germany and spaying/neutering is viewed totally differently here. It seems no one does that here unless the dog truly needs it. But like in the case of Milton, it sounds like she needed it...

@@pheinnyt6425 Germans are not spaying male or female dogs for the most part. I think the males end up getting neutered because some can get very miserable when there is a female in heat that they can't get to. . Female cavs will almost certainly lose their soft silky coat when spayed. If I had a female I would not spay her unless she was having painful menstruations. Just be extra careful when she goes into heat.

The pros definitely outweigh the cons. My Cavalier rescue has mammary cancer because her previous owner never had her spayed. Thankfully, she has the "best" version of cancer and can be managed with tumor removal. One 1 inch tumor was removed with spay, and we're hoping it slows the progression of current/future tumors. Can't really say much about the fur/weight. She was almost completely bald and had a body score of 2.5 when we brought her home. I will say the Velcro attachment/"neurotic" behavior during heat is not something I would want to experience again.

She was always full of energy, had a lot of confidence, never had any issues with her heat cycle she was at a perfect weight of 105lbs, shiny short coat & then she was spayed.... Her coat got really dull & long, her hair was thicker & she shed A LOT, she ended up weighing 135+lbs & she was on a diet... She started getting aggressive towards other dogs, she just started laying around more, she acted depressed & started sleeping almost all day long. Like it was absolutely horrible & then a year later her liver started to shut down & we had a vet come out to our house to have her put to sleep.... It was very sad.... It really ruined my experience for spaying females.

So to say the least I was a little shocked and don't know that I can go through that again. Its horrible... she is almost a year and a half now and I have seen her acting really really strange the past few months. She carries around certain toys everywhere she goes and can get possessive of them. Her tets grew bigger and looked like she had milk. She whines all the time wanting me to be next to her at all times with these few toys she wouldn't let out of her sight. This was a false pregnancy I think. To watch her go through this is hard I thought something was really really wrong with her I have been worried to death. I understand what's going on with her now... My female Cavvie’s fur was sleek & smooth but got wooly & coarse after sterilization. I have to keep her hair clipped most of the year now bc it is so thick & fluffy it makes her miserable in the hot weather months. She also gained lots of weight & her chest area is huge! She almost resembles a bulldog now instead of a Cavalier. She has luxating patella/ torn acl issues & weighs 25 pounds now because her metabolism is slow & she can no longer exercise! :( I regret having her spayed & feel like a bad mom. I don’t believe it is always the best thing for a female to be spayed if you are not going to breed them. They are mammals just like us & need their hormones to function well, just as we do! The vets push unnecessary sterilization on us & unless there is danger of a unwanted pregnancy it should not be pushed! Most Cavvies will not have unwanted pregnancies & have no access to other dogs so spaying them is unnecessary & seems to just cause problems with their endocrinology. Sterilization should be done on a case by case basis & should not be standard across the board.

I do agree so much with this. I recently read that vets are changing their minds about the old way of spaying where everything including the ovaries are removed. You can ask now simply for the womb to be removed, or for the tubes from the ovaries to be tied, just like for humans. They say that taking the ovaries out is incredibly bad for dogs.

Welcome to the wonderful world of owning a Cavalier. Maddie was spayed at 6 mos. and yes, she is super super fluffy with lots of chest hair and it's still very silky soft.. I have to brush her every day and she is 18 lbs. I was worried when she reached 20 lbs. so I cut back on her Royal Canin. From talking to other Cavie owners in England who are NOT spayed, this is normal for the fur to be out of control. The England Cavie owners are different. They like for the fur to grow out and be nice and fluffy (paws included). Me on the other hand do like grooming every couple months. I'm letting her hair grow out for the Winter though and won't take her until maybe January. So who knows really.....I was just told some Cavaliers are bigger than others. I follow a lady on Twitter with a female Cavalier and she's 3 years old, but she's super small. I found myself comparing Maddie to her and I was told don't do that because every Cavalier is different. Maddie is now 21 months (almost 2 yrs.). They do group meet-ups all over England and post them on Twitter, and when I see all of the different sizes and shapes of the Cavaliers, I feel better. lol I have finally come to the realization and conclusion, that they're not supposed to be the same size, shape or weight.

My girl baloo had lots of changes after her spay too! She was a very picky eater before and actually this was down to her having an overproduction of hormones which got worse after her first heat. She stopped eating anything and had to have an emergency spay as she was a risk of pyometra. Luckily we did as her uterus was massive compared to average. Since her spay she eats everything in site and has gained a lot of weight! (Not overweight luckily but she's not severely underweight now despite how much food we offered her) her coat went through a few changes she had alopecia for a while but that's been resolved with some keratin shampoo it restores the balance in the coat and repairs any coat damage she may have from her spay ❤

Hi Girls! I wanted to share my experience with my first cavie. We intended on breeding but she was very fearful of male dogs. At the age of 4 years she developed pyometra. Her uterus was so infected she nearly died. After her surgery, she was so full of energy and yet she did gain weight and became super fluffy which to me seems a small "price" to pay for the health and longevity of my dog. She passed 4 years later to MVD. I spayed my second cavie at 5 months. Her coat at 2yrs is now changing to fluff. Love your pups all you can and do your best to keep them healthy whatever you choose😘

I think that is normal! My male cavalier was neutered around 6-7 months. He’s gotten fluffier and chubbier with age, but still chubby within normal range of the breed. His fur also fluctuates a bit based on the season. As long as your cavalier is still happy and healthy, then I’d say these changes are just minor physical ones which easily could be age-related and not sterilization-related 🙂

Yes the same happened to our Cavalier. Her hair is super fluffy & she needs loads of maintenance! Even after deep grooming, she shakes & fine hair is everywhere. She has gone very stocky & gains weight fast! So we keep her on a weight maintenance diet advised by Vet. All her food is measured to the gram. She does have a small dog biscuit 2 times a day. So we reduced her main food intake slightly. This all happened in the year after being spayed & has continued. She is now 9. Suffers badly with hip pain. (Breeder said parents were checked 4 Hereditary Hip problems & they both fine). So I wonder if she is not producing a hormone or absorbing a nutrient which has facilitated the progression of Osteoarthritis. She has suffered 4 about 5years now & we have to give her anti inflammatory painkiller daily now, sadly. Wonder if anyone else has similar story, & if they found anything that helps? Thank u 4 ur helpful video. Your Cavaliers are absolutely gorgeous! X

Tomorrow is her 2 week checkup and hopefully she will get the all-clear to have the cone taken off of her. I've been wondering myself how getting fixed will change her. If anything, I hope my neighbor is right about her calming down a bit. She's always jumping on people, and I'm hoping it's just an age thing but another neighbor whose mother had Springer Spaniels has told me she's always going to be hyper and excitable. Doggone, I hope that's not true for Cavaliers because I want to be able to have friends over without her jumping on them!

The only difference I notice with his coat is when we got him groomed where he's been cut it's thicker than the coat on his body where we've never touched its soft and smooth, he still has a lovely coat though ❤

I have a beagle and I know they are very different but from my experience with her getting them spayed before they go into heat would prevent this. She was spayed at 10 weeks (rescue) and all she’s ever known is a life without the desire to breed. I think this would help their hormones from going out of whack because they never went through puberty. Now she is a bit chunky and I’m sure it’s her metabolism from being spayed but I think it’s for the best. I am curious to see how this would affect a male cavalier because I am getting one in a few months.

My pup's breeder told us there's actually a word for it: It's called spay coat. Apart from the weight gain, it's also much harder for spayed/neutered dogs to maintain proper muscle mass. More importantly than the physical aspects though: behaviorally I've seen too many good dogs ruined by castratio. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that hormones affect behavior, yet it's often overlooked when discussing the consequences. Occasionally the pro-spay crowd will mention that dogs often become lethargic (they call it "calmer" and pretend that it's a good thing). However, the truth is the effects can vary wildly and unpredictably. Some dogs actually become MORE energetic after castration. Worse, I've seen perfectly happy-go-lucky dogs turn into nervous wrecks after their natural testosterone levels were taken away from them (and no, they did not "recover" after a few months). I've also seen very friendly, submissive dogs develop severe leash reactivity and resource guarding issues after the surgery. Sometimes, behavior doesn't change at all after castration - but is it worth the risk? Studies have also established a link between spay/neuter, and canine cognitive dysfunction. Often, neutered dogs develop dementia earlier in their lives, and it progresses more rapidly. Things get even worse when dogs are not allowed to mature before having their hormones removed. I've gotten to the point where I can usually tell just by looking at a dog, whether they were neutered/spayed too early or not. Hormones play a role in the dog's growth, and without them, male dogs will often have smaller/underdeveloped penises, which not only means they take longer to pee, but also increases the risk of pee infections and other related health issues. In female dogs, spay incontinence is a condition that's pretty un-fun for dogs AND their owners. Aside from that, early spay/neutering also affects the entire anatomy; you'll often have thinner chests, thinner/weaker and longer legs, and a higher risk of dysplasias. (Here's an example of two purebred litter-mates; they have basically the same genetics, but very different body structure because one was neutered early, while the other was not: valork9academy.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Screen-Shot-2020-03-25-at-3.46.51-PM.png ) Dogs that are neutered before they are full grown also have a three times higher risk of developing bone cancer.
@animalobsessed1
@animalobsessed1 4 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think I'll get my female spayed when she's around 8-9 years old, because at that point the risk of pyometra will begin to outweigh all the above risks. She's a year old now, and I can see that she still has some growing to do. If she starts having a lot of false pregnancies, I'll probably get her spayed at around 2-3 years though. As for my male dog, I'd love to get him neutered, just so I don't have all that stress every time she goes into heat, but then... I don't know if it's worth it to take all the risk, just to have less stress for a few weeks per year? I'm particularly worried how neutering might affect his personality, since he's such a perfect dog right now. I've also considered getting him a vasectomy instead, so he can still have all the health and behavior benefits of testosterone, but without the risk of unwanted pregnancy. In that case though, he'd still be stressed out when she goes into heat, and they'd still need to be separated, because females can get feisty when the male gets obnoxious. I'm undecided...

We used to feed her a scrambled egg every morning and she'd be all hippity-hoppy at our ankles as we prepped it and she devoured it the moment she could get to it. After spaying, she won't touch scrambled eggs. Like a switch was flipped. She used to eat fruits like berries and watermelon when offered, even some veggies. Now she won't touch them. For the record, most Cavaliers in the U.S. purchased at breeders are sold specifically on pet contracts, which means you are absolutely not allowed to breed them on your own and must spay/neuter them by a specific dates (usually two years of age). Maybe Canada is different, but here, you can't just decide to breed your Cav.

I have a 16 mo old female(Annie). She is on the smaller side. She was spayed at about 11 mos. She is a little thicker and her coat is a little longer, but nothing dramatic. I think she is just “adult” now. I had a 9 yr old male who I had to put down in oct. 2021 with advanced heart failure. He was diagnosed at about 6 and accelerated very quickly. I had him neutered at about 7 mos. Old due to undesirable male behaviors. He exploded with body size and coat growth. His diet was strictly controlled and he topped out at 26 lbs before he started putting on water and taking Lasix for his heart failure. I intended to trim him up as you do and as I do with Annie but he literally had curly hair dripping the ground and sticking out a couple of inches all over his body. Poor Bernie was from a reputable show breeder with both parents health certified and had the misfortune of mad. Also he went deaf at 3. Contacted the breeder and she told me that while the breed clubs don’t keep records on it,it is not at all uncommon. They are still a delightful breed that are worth the risks. I too am a confirmed Blenheim owner. I do think it is just the hereditary coat and body type of the individual dog.

Arya my lovely little cavalier has never been spayed, but she got fluffy like a cotton ball too. She hates being brushed, so I have to trim her or else she quickly becomes a knotty matted little mess. So maybe more age related? We’ve been debating whether or not to spay her now that she’s 6 and at this point she’s too old and breeding would be more risky. But I am concerned about personality changes or risks of the surgery since she’s older...

Definitely recommend spaying Arya. The risk of her getting a pyometra (infection of the uterus) increases by age. It is less of a risk of having her spayed than risking losing her from an infected uterus. I got my girls spayed at age 2 and 4 years old and they didn't have any behavior changes or body changes. Now my girls are 11 and 9 years old and have recently gained weight because I just don't have the time to walk them anymore.

im so stuck on this issue right now. i have had a litter with one of my girls, but the other i have not. still not sure if i will. ive been super hesitant about making a decision to spay because i am worried about how they would feel - how it would effect health, personality, habbits, happyness. i take the "xtra" steps i need to make sure im not being irresponsible with their ability to have litters. so im just so unsure.

I am really not sure whether to spay my shihpoo she is coming up to a year old and we do not want to breed her. I just don't know if she will suffer more if we spay her? If anyone has any advice I would love to hear it! She has just started her first heat cycle.

I have experienced exactly the same thing. My female cavalier was once also thinner, sleek with straight feathering and flowing fur. Once she was spayed, the hormone changes as a result of the surgical removal of her ovaries led to wiry-like fluffy fur that grew in all directions. Also, curly coat is a relatively common condition with cavaliers that appears to be the function of early de-sexing or cutting of the coat too short. My cavalier also has demonstrated a relative ease to gaining weight now - which thankfully due to her crazy 'zoomies' with her big brother in our backyard - has managed to keep her weight the same. Thanks for the share! I thought I was the only one! :) How old is your female cavalier?

@@herkythecavalier Thanks for the reply. Interesting. My female was desexed rather early - at about 5 months on advice from our vet. I suspect this may also be part of the reason we are seeing these phenotypic changes in her.

As a nurse and woman who had to have a partial hysterectomy at 23 years old, (uterus only, leaving me my ovaries) and then oophorectomy secondary to CA, I do NOT agree with doing a full hysterectomy on female dogs. It is absolutely unnecessary and ages them in so many ways. I went from an athletic, active, busy woman who had a quality of life like no other. I felt fantastic after having the partial especially health wise. After having my ovaries out, I feel old, my hair, skin, muscle tone, vision, bones, joints, etc. have all aged almost overnight. I do not know who to talk to about not doing a full hyster on my beautiful Golden Retriever just in the name of preventing pregnancy. Females will not get pregnant if they just removed the uteran horns and leave the ovaries attached to the round ligament! It is a cop-out to force a female to have her ovaries removed when a much less devastating procedure will do the exact same thing! 😡😢 Everyone also talks about how they settle down after getting fixed. Of course they do! They were unnecessarily forced into surgical menopause! 😡 Everyone is always talking about how much they love their fur babies, and they would do anything for them. SPEAK UP AND MAKE VETS DO THE RIGHT THING FOR YOUR FUR-BABY!!

Unfortunately I had to neuter my Cavalier at 5 months because he was a rescue and it was part of the contract. I do know many people believe thus shouldn't be done until 2 years of age. It can keep the bones and cost from fully developing. I don't know if that's true or not. I do know that the few rinses mind has been put underer sedation his fur changes and does't return to normal for at least a year.

Just had my chiahuah spayed she’s 16 only reason was due to her having pyrometra and I’m SO glad I scheduled it when I did since her open cervix turned into a closed one and this very well could have killed her quickly. I don’t know about any of these changes yet or if I will see any since she is so old but if there is a change I’m hoping for better weight gain. Her fur is currently super soft due to her diet so hopefully that doesn’t change nor her personality too much since she’s a bit more cranky in old age (understandable) she’s currently next to me now in bed since the vet said it was ok since too much change so quickly could really upset her and impede her healing. I’m a very soft sleeper (I don’t toss and turn a lot) and since I have my pillows angled certain ways I’m not likely to squish her but I have her on one of her mats and in a towel in case she goes in the middle of the night it won’t be on me or the bed it’s easier to clean a towel and some dog bedding than my own 😭 first night is just figuring out sleeping arrangement with her I think I have that sorted out now though we will see in the morning I guess. I’m hoping her incontinece was due to her having an infection in which case I’m goikg to be excited she doesn’t need diapers anymore but I’m also doubtful but I have a full pack still so I’ll see how this goes following a week. She has internal stitches so I’m hopeful all is going to go well and I’ll see more improvements to come already with being on antibiotics I saw improvements(even though her cervix went from open to closed) she was in a lot less pain (inflammation went down) and she seems to have more control over her bladder though not fully

I sprayed my pomeranian 4 months ago. Her body is totally different. In my case 1. she actually lost hair for now. I hope it will recover. 2. her legs changed forms. the way she sits looks totally different. It even looks crooked towards the inside. Honestly, I think it was a mistake.
