As a kid this was my dream car. The 2002 Silver Arrow. In 2004 I was able to purchase one with 24,000 miles on it. In 2023 I traded it in for another 2002 Silver Arrow with only 60,000 miles on it. My silver Arrow had almost 200,000 miles on it. I will keep the new one forever. It is now a “CLASSIC CAR” 🎊 🎉💃🏾🕺🏾I love it 😍

This reminds of the first car I was jealous of. A big insurance producer drove a late nineties SL 500 in Red over tan. Absolutely gorgeous car, but on all accounts not the best human. He drove that thing with pride and parked it with prominence in his reserved spot for all of us to drool over. He's since retired but he can still be spotted driving that beautiful red piece all over creation.

Red/blue vent buttons are to allow different temp air towards the head than rest of cabin. The idea is that you can have some fresh air to your head to keep you awake even if your climate control is set very hot. BMWs have the same feature.

I have owned a silver1999 320 for 7 years - it's brilliant and so under valued! Get one now while they are cheap because they will be appreciating albeit slowly. However that's not he point the reason for ownership is what they are and how they make you feel and Bill did a good job on this "short" video!

This is likely the best Mercedes since the original SL Gullwing models, at least of the modern era. There is also a SL600 Silver Arrow edition too, it's rarer than hens teeth.

OMG 😳, I was literally looking at 90s SL500’s all day and this video pops up 🤩🤩.

As an auto technician, I absolutely loathe these over engineered impossible to diagnose European cars. But any video by Bill is just as entertaining as the 90s GM cars of my youth. The weather and animal reports are part of what makes Bills videos the best car reviews on KZfaq.

I have owned 3 silver cars. The color really accentuates the shape of the car. You had to keep them polished to keep the paint from fading. I had a love/hate relationship with the color. I would fall in love with the car on the showroom floor, then on the street I would see it in a red or a black and wish I had bought that color.

You are correct about the bangs the 1st I put one down I thought I had done something wrong and the top was exploding. Once the basket hoop came up when I was going too fast across an intersection and the hoop activated and felt sure I had just ran over a land mine in midtown Atlanta.

The build quality of the R129 SL's is outstanding and after many years of being unloved, good examples, particularly the limited edition cars, are becoming very desirable. Here in the UK prices of good early R230's are also improving, the SL55's in particular and they represent much better value even though the build quality isn't as good.

Once again, a potentially beautiful start up sequence ruined by obnoxious and incessant ‘beeping’…perhaps it can disabled by a semi-competent car guy like me? Bill, Thank You so much for these absolute gems of information and entertainment! I commend you on your work ethic…getting up and running before dawn, I’m sure has contributed greatly to your success. Your depth of understanding in the workings of car world and racing is legendary, in my opinion. Love the fact that you like to wake up the neighbors with a little chirp to get the day going. Top down, screen up, and windows up at 140 mph you could carry on a conversation with a passenger. A very impressive car even now and even more back in the day. I paid 72,500 at auction for my 95 in 1997 with 17K miles on it. You are correct they were quite pricey but I will have to say it was on a very short list of cars that were actually worth what you had to pay for them. As you stated, the next body style sure left you wondering what hell Mercedes had done to the SL. The 2003 my friend bought when they came out was $ 103,000 piece of junk. I think it spent more time in the service dept than in his garage. I replaced my SL with a CLK 430 Cabriolet that I ordered in 08/99 and received in 02/01. The first 6 month I owned it, 4-1/2 of them were spent in the service department. Once I tried 3 times to leave the dealership and the check engine light would light up before I could get out of the dealership parking lot. This was after the car had been at the dealership for 3 week and I was finally, I thought, getting it back.

Bill definitely has titanium balls. There's no way you would catch me nudging 90 in someone else's car with a rod like that stashed in the door pocket!

I think there's a signature Mercedes Benz engine start up sound. I've noticed it on my m112 engine, and a friend's m272 engine, and now in this video. The AMG engines sounds quite different from the regular engines.

My 20-ish YO daughter and I totally get and often use the "mysterious' red and blue button option on the dash. Just look at it as a separate mini climate control for the neck and face area of the driver and/or passenger. I/we live in Colorado and get plenty of cold and hot days. The neck and face are never quite dressed the same as the rest of the body so a little cool air to the face once the rest of you is warmed up in the winter and some extra cold air in the heat of summer is wonderful as is extra heat to the ears in the process of getting warmed up for the trip back from skiing. That air ONLY comes from the 2 center vents. Should be stock in all vehicles.

Fantastic as always. I only disagree on the reliability of the next gen R230 which was was drastically improved in later years. All around pound for pound R230 ended up being the better SL but there would be no R230 without the R129.

The centre vents are outside air which is not heated or cooled unless you press the heated or cooled button . Simple 😊
