The ONLY heavy song on the album. I worked my ass off to get my parents to buy that album for me when I was a kid because I LOVED neon ballroom. Diorama was the most disappointing album I've ever owned. Too bad they didn't last long enough for a best of volume 2.

I do not believe he deleted those 8 songs 100%, there is definitely a burned CD or a tape or a HDD back-up waiting to see the light of day somewhere in a dusty box somewhere...

As much as I LOVE early Silverchair (my favorite band of all time), seeing the refreshing change of direction that they went, where they chose uplifting catharsis over harnessing pain was so powerful. He chose rebirth over conformity, and fought for what he knew he could trust, not what the world was saying to do. The evolution and maturity that you hear in the journey from Frogstomp to Young Modern is just remarkable. There is literally one album for every type of person out there, and if you're like me who's mood fluctuates a lot, there's ALWAYS a Silverchair song you can find that will fit. Prior to the podcast, I never even knew about how he scrapped an album, and I thought I knew everything. As much as it would've been marvelous to hear them go hard just one last time, I'm so glad he didn't. I think it would've eaten him alive, as his mental health was already just recovering from a very delicate state. I'm more than happy with what Diorama came to be, it's truly its own sonic theatrical experience. Daniel Johns as a songwriter & composer is truly OTHER WORLDLY. His love with the art of music itself always shows, whether it's Grunge, Baroque Rock, Orchestral, or Electronica. It's 100% possible to love ALL the phases of Silverchair, & I wouldn't have it any other way! 😭🌟💖🔥🎶

i kind of dont believe this story of erased album. sure he might had some demos that were similiar to previous record that he deleted, but i dont believe that he had "finished" album (meaning songs that chris and ben also already arranged) that he deleted , and siliverchair menagment team allowed it like that if he really worked it on 18months. they would have for sure some rights to it or at least some demos locked , but u never hear anything about that "deleted album" from anybody else but daniel. I really like the dude, especially in that era, but to me he sounds now like he is trying to create some kind of mythology to his progression path, that would allow him to benefit from his acomplishments and the huge amount of nostalgia his fanbase have twords him

I'm 43 at the time of posting and I've listened to Silverchair since I was 16 which is as soon as they became famous. Every album has its own special meaning for me depending on my mood. Diorama is the one album that I still play from start to finish where I tend to shuffle the entire Silverchair, Dissociatives and Daniel Johns playlist if not. (I can't seem to find the songs that he did separately with Paul mac anywhere at the moment) I love his new stuff and also the dreams album, dissociative album...everything Daniel does means something to me. It's almost like Daniel was created to entertain me. It would have loved to hear this album and it wouldn't have fixed me on him being better at one music type over others. He's a genius! It's quite obvious. I'm so happy hearing that Daniel is creating music for himself because this is why he has been so successful. I honestly love you man x

And what a horrific mistake he made. That was when Daniel’s Lucifer-like fall from grace occurred. I once worshipped Silverchair and fiercely defended them against ANY haters…until Daniel left me no choice but to become one of those haters myself. DIORAMA was the dying gasps of the once flawless band I loved, before being brutally murdered in the follow-up musical massacre. It baffles me how a musician as fantastic as he was, could go from composing and releasing three albums of the most amazing and most beloved music I have ever heard (plus a pretty solid 4th album) to then vomiting up some of the most repulsive, melodically unpleasant excuses of “music” I have ever had the displeasure of enduring, ever since. YOUNG MODERN broke me. I now have a primal, seething hatred for that abomination. It is far easier for my heart to convince myself that he died after releasing DIORAMA (which did still have some good material on it) rather than face the far more tragic truth. YM was its own irredeemable genre that I officially dubbed “Twinkledink Glitterfunk” and I hate every second of it! Their other albums each got hundreds, if not thousands of plays from me. Yet (to date) I have only managed to stomach YM about 5 times total. And the God awful solo defecations he pumps out now is like hearing a Hellspawn amalgamation of Tiny Tim, Bjork, Primus, David Bowie and Justin Timberlake if they all got lethally drunk and recorded…..”sounds”(?!?) together. I just hate it all so damn much! If I could travel back in time, I would go back to just before he tragically hit the “Delete” button on the “unreleased” album and knock that dude out to keep him from making the most terrible mistake in rock music lore and hopefully prevent (or at very least delay) the impending nightmare that was going to happen because of it.

Would have been awesome to hear that, I remember when i heard him talk about this the first time many years ago and thinking the same thing because i do enjoy the heavier stuff a bit more. and the mix that was on neon ballroom was really dope. daniel was very good at emoting all that pain in his music. He could articulate everything very well. I actually met a good friend of mine in austria ( im from ny originally) in a silverchair chat room in 99. by 2008 i was living in austria in his band. after 2011 or so we had a falling out. I think there is still a big misunderstanding to this day. thats a bummer. there was a special connection with him but for some reason he didnt value it the same way after a point. I was lost in pain for a long time. i could still go back to that. i understand the same feelings daniel has about music and the fear of making new music. eh theres too much to say. i never even got started because there was always too much pain to do what i loved most its too complicated.

When he hit the delete button on that tape, he deleted his younger self in lew of some supposed person he would become. Well, he became a sad sorry immitation of a person manipulated instead by mass culture, he got manipulated either way. We got a great album out of it, but ultimately also the death of the band entirely because he went too far down the pop rabbit hole and turned into literally his teenage selfs worst nightmare, a camp, deranged person with no observable tact or taste anymore. Basically started making Millenial Whoop music. Like an alcoholic blaming their troubles on the substance and not themselves. What he should've done was simply release both albums at the same time as a double disc of entirely different records. "Diorama" as a name would've worked perfectly for something containing a myriad of sounds. He could've called Disc 1: Past and Disc 2: Future. OR, release the metal one only online for the pirates (this is 2002 btw, peak piracy/internet culture) and had truly something worth talking about. Daniel, you fucked up. Instead of making just Diorama, you could have had Diorama truly be a reflective work of who you were and who you were going to be. It'd have been a true resolution, which you clearly never got. You also would've been able to trick all the Limp Bizkit people into listening to all of the music, the heavy and the baroque.

I doubt the label allowed him 100% control to delete the 8 songs, there are copies somewhere. They most likely signed a contract to not release the copies or something. I do wonder how long that clause is though? If it is a lifetime that,is a 70 year clause so most of us who were in our 20s back then would be in our 90s or older when those songs are released, if not leaked!

Diorama is interesting. In some ways it reminds me of some Nolan movies like Tenet where the idea and production is amazing and gets better with more time but something is off from making it a classic. I give them an A for the general concept but execution was still a bit of a misfire overall. The only country it sold well was Australia which is because Silverchair can release anything there and it does well. But the markets that Silverchair had a lot of success in before like America, Canada the Atlantic record executives were correct in that it didn't sell. Even looking over the critics again no one was raving about it. It wasn't getting bad reviews but mostly 3-4 stars out of 5 type of album meaning it was good but it felt like it was missing something.

Also, as a musician myself. it annoys me to no end that common music "fans" don't want a band/artist to explore new territory and show any form of growth/maturity. a true music fan would understand this. Look at a band like Queen, for instance. They released a full-on "club music" album (see Hot Space). Did it fail? absolutely. Even the band wishes they could delete it out of existence, but I respect them for trying something new which is why I still love them to this day. Not every album has to be a certified "banger". Also, being a musician, playing the same style of music and not exploring other musicial landscapes gets tedious and boring. Would a Kyuss-inspired Silverchair album been awesome? Maybe, maybe not. We'll never know. I completely understand where Daniel Johns is coming from though on scrapping an idea completely and trying something different. It's how us musicians grow and become better artists. I wouldn't have cared if he wanted to release an album of covers of show tunes, at least he gave it his best shot and it shows me that he is doing what he wants to do, even if the "fans" don't like it. Also, these days, you don't really need a big record label. Sure, it's extremely hard to self-promote yourself without major label backing but, there have been many bands that I'm personally a fan of that had major label backing that received pretty much no promotion from that label whatsoever and have been relegated to complete obscurity because the label execs (who typically have zero understanding of what people actually want to hear) don't think that release is commercially viable (which translates to...won't make those execs a fat stack of cash. As for the thing about a major label shelving an album, that happens all the time and us fans don't get to hear what could've/should've been until the artist/the main musical force in a band dies.

The music might have been deleted, but the light that bounced off him and everything else during the recording is still out there in the universe travellng, and perhaps one day in the far future when we can captuer light somehow, recombine it and watch movies of old times as they really happened. but with no audio? that would kind of suck, im sure they'll find a way for audio too

Boy influenced by Kyuss! It will probably kick ass, I mean, people blame themselves for like, if they don't like Diorama is because they don't want him to grow up... But I really don't indentify myself with his soft moanings with cotton ideas and care bear riffs, and last thing... Let's remember that he was listening to Kyuss and not Coldplay right!? so why he expected for us hooligans to like that soft heart full of feelings thing... Nice video bro, loughing stoned as I write this and hope you get some Loughs too! But it's what I think anyway By the way he could grow up to a sludge stoner mother fucker guy too!
