Speed is king when prairie dog shooting, its hard to beat vaporizing varmints. That is why 17 fireball.

From MidwayUSA I bought the AR 15 Shilen barrel and bolt for 17 Remington, so I love it ! Pest control took on a new amazement of exploding pest. Using the Hornaday 15.5 grain bullet it shoots same hole every shot and turns birds and small pest into a blood mist rainbow. With the 17 Remington no changes to the AR or magazines were needed.

I have to agree. I didn't have my prairie dog retrieval tool, so I couldn't fish out the one that slide into the hole. I'm glad it was on video!!

The more I watch these videos the more I realize I need to move back west. My 1 week a year to try and cram ALL my varmint shooting in is just not adequate. Few more years of the GRIND that is my life and I will be able to slow it down a bit and enjoy some wide open spaces again. Love the videos!

@@varmintermagazine Yes sir that is the plan! I left Idaho 25 years ago chasing the career. It’s been one hell of a ride and I look forward to closing the loop! With that said I’ve always managed to find myself back doing what I love at least 1 week a year in a state I cant wait to call home again! Appreciate the content you produce as it allows me to live vicariously through you for the other 51 weeks of the year! Ha!

Don't forget 17 Remington comes in AR 15 barrels + bolt head spaced to the barrel from Shilen sold on MidwayUSA. Zero changes are needed to be run through the AR 15 and magazines

The magazine looks like it needs an endomag style insert. Or a 3D printed magazine that is shorter internally to take up the dead space in the front. For the spring you'd have to use a 9mm handgun mag spring or wind your own. I'd start with the Gatalog's waffle mag as the base.

I run a 20rd Magpul with delrin spacer at the rear with a Glock 17 mag spring. Have it setup to hold 15rds & feeds flawlessly with last round hold open. Dead space up front is asking for trouble and front spacer is useless.

It was a quad, chalk it up! Perfect shot. The abbreviated 223 cases are really awesome, love how efficient they are. Personally I think the 20vartarg is the ballistic sweet spot, but obviously the market disagrees. Hopefully some day someone important will notice I'm right, haha. Maybe those feeding issues could be solved with elongated and shallowed feed ramps? Could be that the cases are pointing straight for too long. The action length is clearly the problem but the fireballs are just never gonna get the kind of attention necessary for an appropriately-sized action.

It would definitely feed better with a slightly shorter mag follower (blocked at rear). However, it's not an issue until it gets dirty. Btw, I shoot a .20 Practical, but the Vartarg and Practical are both great cartridges.

We have some coming. We are in the doldrums of summer, so there are not many varmints around to shoot. Come late August/early September, we will be out after predators.

Howa Mini with a 300bo bolt. What round should I rebarrel it to? I'm considering 20vartarg or 17rem. Any other ideas? Will be a gopher /varmint gun up to coyotes.

I'm going through the same decision-making process right now. I'm leaning towards a .223AI, or a .17 Remington.

Yes. I think it would feed properly. My only concern would be the ejected brass, but a brass catcher can resolve that.

@@varmintermagazine I actually ordered a barrel today, but I think I messed up, I ordered a CM barrel 1:9 twist 18.5"... I would have rather had a 1:10SS...

@@ZZ-uf4zv - The 1:9" should be fine for 25 and 20. Some folks have issues with the 25s in the 1:10" twist.

From MidwayUSA I bought the Shilen AR 15 17 rem barrel + bolt head spaced to the barrel and just love it ! No felt recoil was so strange with so much noise.
