Ace Attorney is easily one of the most important franchises in video game history, making it's influence in game design and online/pop culture. Yet despite how influential and recognizable the series is, the games themselves aren't nearly as notable in comparison. I mean, most people aren't really going to sought after a reading based video game right? So it's impressive that a visual novel like Ace Attorney is able to become so popular despite lackluster game sales. So why?
Simply put, its because Ace Attorney is easily one of the most visually and auditorily recognizable franchises in recent memory. And it's all because it was a game made to be simple.

Hey everyone 👋 This video is technically an expansion to a video I made for my College Application talking about "media that impacted me." Though that video was just a one minute babbling into a microphone, I decided to update it two years later which led to this video. Thanks everyone for watching this video which took way longer to make because ofc college. But, hopefully some more simpler videos will be out to split the gap between uploads. Anyways, once again, thanks for watching and stay tuned for more!

You can really tell when a game is directed by Shu Takumi and when a game is directed by Takeshi Yamazaki based on the boss fights. With Takumi's killers motive is a big factor in taking them down where as with Yamazaki more focus is put on how the killers managed to kill the victims and frame the defendents. Compare and contrast Turnabout Sisters with Turnabout Airlines. 1 has a pretty simple murder method while having a pretty complex and the other 1 has really simple motive, but the way they went about killing victim followed up with how they tried to cover it up is a lot complex.
@CoolCarGuy

I felt Yamazaki did I fine job with Ace Attorney; there certainly were some aspects that were quite good under his control and some of my favorite cases were from him. But I feel he had this almost corporate and surface level understanding of Ace Attorney compared to Takumi, which Takumi immediately showed when he took back control in The Great Ace Attorney
@spouwnerring
@spouwnerring Жыл бұрын
@@CoolCarGuy from my POV I feel like Ace Attorney Investigations 1 was Yamazaki testing the waters and playing it safe, because he was working on his 1st ever AA game, but when it came to the sequel he finaly found his footing and went all out. However when Yamazaki got promoted to be the guy to direct all of the main line games, because Shu was still busy with the cross-over the exacs were probably breathing down his neck, based on the fact Apollo Justice Ace Attorney wasn't universaly liked.

@@spouwnerring yeah and it’s a shame as you can definitely feel the more hollow ace attorney feel in those games compared to the ones Takumi did besides investigations. There’s still greatness, just not as much

i have a good friend who is into music and sound design and we would bring up how overlooked sound design is in general, so I wanted to spend a good amount of time just acknowledging how important it really is, especially to convey a lot of detail with such a small yet essential quality in video game and media design as a whole

I'm happy someone finally mentions the dialogue SFX, they were the first thing I ever noticed that gripped and charmed me into videogames as a quirky fascinating media all those years when I first played some unknowable GBA games as a kid. Not just Ace Attorney, but video games in general, the dialogue SFX were probably a limitation workaround, but they were integral to keeping the dialogue compelling and addictive to advance. We don't see it much anymore with newer games which I think is awful because the "dialogue beeps and chirps" is so unique and original and gives video games identity. It's kind of a whole 'nother beast, so I'll keep it to that.

Damn... am I seriously the ONLY person who loved every new mechanic in 1-5? The security footage was my absolute favorite segment! It's like playing "Spot the Difference" while *also* establishing a lot of cool little details about the scene we're seeing! It was *so fun!* Maybe I can kinda get why "turn the vase around" game could become a bit annoying... but when ypu get it right, you can see just how *exactly* it fits the shape... it was insanely amazing. I was sure it would only "kinda" work, but... my perfectionism enjoyed that final revelation very much.
@CoolCarGuy
@CoolCarGuy Жыл бұрын
I think the security footage on paper is a very good addition to the games that adds another level to the gameplay. But the problem is that they implemented it that over convoluted the story and made it way too slow and impractical. It was a broken concept that needed more to it but they have since kind of abandoned it to add more gimmicks instead.
@Kayta-Linda

@@CoolCarGuy Well, I didn't get that at all. I just played through it an it was my favourite part of the entire case. ..and after some time, I stumbled onto all the memes about how "horrible" it apparently is. Still disagree with every point, the video exploration isn't "overcomplicated", it's very much linear. One thing, then the next, and that's the whole timeline. It's literally just reviewing the scene end explaining all the details behind it. I think it's incredibly well thought-out. ..to me, the only thing I don't like about 1-5 is how it handles Edgeworth. Why make him retroactively more "just" when the entire trilogy is all about how he became a better person? Kinda... Makes the message not as interesting or impactful. Everything else, though, was pretty damn awesome.

Man the video segment was dope affffff, it gave a whole new depth to examining evidence more than just reading the text blurbs. I really liked that addition to the gameplay and was kinda bummed out they didn't implement it on next cases. (At the time i didn't know that the two other games were already made, lol) The rotating of the vase was a neat idea but it was implemented awfully because the difference between getting it right and wrong was like a couple of pixels and i had to repeat that shit like 20 times. I wouln't have minded more of that type of gameplay if it was a little more forgiving tho.

that little cutscene of genshin impact where you overlayed "this goes on for 4 hours" hurts. i understand now why i've been mindlessly skipping dialogues in genshin. ace attorney is one of my first games and the game i picked up because it had dialogues and i wanted to learn english. it was a leap because my previous "learning" media was geronimo stilton of all things. i had absolute hell trying to follow the dialogues in AA but at least i can say it's worth the effort. it absolutely shaped my expectations with games especially around story writing aspect of it. AA's writing isn't perfect, but when it lands, it lands.

I love Ace Attorney (I didn't when I was first introduced, but I do now) and I love this video! I think something special about the games is the love shared between characters, like Phoenix and Maya, or the rivalry that turns into trust between Phoenix and Edgeworth. Really it's the relationships between so many characters that are such a major draw. Trucy and Apollo may not know they're siblings, but they sure act like it lol Susato and Ryuunosuke are very charming together, and then you see Ryuunosuke earning van Zieks's trust and it's so good?? Klavier helps Apollo instead of fighting him, like past defense lawyer/prosecutor duos do. Loved this video, it was so much fun to discuss the music and the sprites and so on. :)

You are SO right about Great Ace Attorney being Takumi’s magnum opus; as much as the original trilogy captured my heart, those games have not left my head since I played them. I love this franchise and the art that fans have made in response to it, and this video captures its magic so well. Great job!

Your denouement discussing everything you love about the series really came through in the heart of this video, and is something I think many (if not all) Ace Attorney fans can relate to. There are just so many aspects about Ace Attorney - from the music to the storytelling to the character design and animation - that have always made it stand out to me in a way that felt truly original. (And yes, also “haha funny gay lawyer game”! ) :D It’s been lovely to see more people discovering the game in recent years - in let’s plays, new fanworks, and even just hearing the music used in the background of KZfaq videos! With Apollo Justice, Dual Destinies, and Spirit of Justice receiving a port to many major platforms only a few days ago, I really hope more people will be able to play the series for themselves! (Good timing on this video btw, holy cow!!) To all fans of Ace Attorney, new and old, I hope you continue to enjoy the series for a very long time and share it with your friends! :)

What an amazing and breathtaking documentary. Probably one the components of me being into Ace Attorney was my previous danganronpa phase and oh boy, i would talk about this game for hours. Not only is the editing so spectacular, but this also kept me engaged. The points are absolutely valid, such as the designs being amazing, intriguing music, and such. Music especially got me excited, especially overtaken (best pursuit imo, tho all pursuits are amazing). TGGA is a phenomenal game, and i love it. It references the main games, such as the Phoenix Wright trolley and such. It has a lot of strength from the previous games. I do wanna add on that a lot of its components are from the plvspw crossover like multiple witnesses, clashing testimonies (sort of, but tgaa added more stuff), and even the runo walking animation feels similar. The crossover feels important as the other games 😊 In conclusion, AA is an amazing game, this is a spectacular documentary, editing is phenomenal and engaging, and I hope more people subscribe to your channel. 👏 👏 👏

Special mention to the story as well. I started playing Ace Attorney because 'haha funny anime lawyer game' but was fnaf jumpscared by the unexpectedly three-dimensional characters and how their relationships with other characters influence eachother. Like I was shocked by how engaging Edgeworth's arc was in the triolgy, how interested I was in Godot and his whole deal with Mia and how that influenced him today. Or Maya's developement into a more capable partner for the law firm, honestly I applaud them in general for Maya's character. The first time I saw her and realized she was there to stay, I was worried that she was just going to be another Paimon. But I was pleasently surprised with how they managed to make her a fun addition to the game. the dialogue is a 10/10 too though, I love how much banter there is between characters. It also works really well with Edgeworth's character, dude probably wouldn't be as likable if he wasn't argueably the sassiest character in the franchise.

When it comes to the visuals of Chronicles, I get the feeling some of the poses are based on drawn stills. I noticed this especially with susato, where her standard pose and model is really similar to her standing concept art, which is also used for her case profile. In any case, when it comes to differences to AA5, I believe it's a matter of attention to detail, and the threshold the two directors have when it comes to the individual elements of the games. You'll notice not just that the characters are based on stills down to the hair, but eyes moving, how some animations are crafted to loop smoothly and how there's full movement between poses rather than snaps. There's real "particularity" about them that reveals a sense of deliberation about how they looked when being created. That would carry over to Spirit of Justice, where some of the the new animations are really nice and fluid, feeling a lot more polished, but leaving a gulf between the new and the reused AA5 animations. I may be remembering wrong, but I recall Yamazaki describing his involvement in the visuals as going to the animation/modeling division and telling them to "make it look 2d". Whereas Takumi had to be convinced by the art director that 3d was the way to go. I get the feeling 3d had to be fully utilized if Takumi was going to go forward with it, resulting in a stronger initial polish. When it comes to animation sequencing and timing, Takumi does it manually through a scripting engine, so it's evident why he's so particular about the visuals of the games. The way visuals are handled are probably habits from the Ghost Trick days, where animations and visuals were polished to a fine sheen. From the way Takumi talks in interviews and the artists and musicians notes, it seems Takumi Vetoes literally everything made for the games, hence the finer levels of detail. Also, was the part about visuals of Chronicles taken partly from a reddit comment? It seems really similar to something I've read on the subreddit 😂. Hope your admissions went well. 22:18 Yiikpilled

I personally didnt mind the Percieve or the Ritual gameplay additions, but the problem for me is that outside of the games theyre the major proponent of, theyre barely used Like take the magatama or the Percieve function from OG trilogy and AJ:AA. In DD and SoJ, we're instead made to use the Emotion system, which is a fine addition, but then the Percieve and the Magatama parts suffer, where theyre often used as a scapegoat to get a specific piece of evidence as opposed to being used often and a part of the larger mystery
@EliasMorals

Though the major problem I had for the Emotion system is the fact that it's so Hand-Holdy

The “simplicity” you speak of is one of the main reasons why I love turn based RPGs and games like Ace Attorney. These types of games truly test the player’s mind rather than their reflexes. They use story and music opposed to high edge art and complex gameplay. They make the player feel more immersed in the game rather than just making them feel like they’re mashing buttons.

a game that i think highlights the imortance of the voice bleeps really well is the original ds version of 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors (one of my favourite games ever, if you like ace attorney, you'll probably like 999 as well). It has voice bleeps for the character's dialogue, which helps to differentiate each character even without voice acting, since each character gets a different pitch. It also helps with one of the twists later on but i genuinely want people to play this game so i wont talk about it

Dialogue sounds are in a lot of old games, Mario & Luigi, Mother 1, Earthbound and even lesser known things like gargoyles quest and simply the sound that each of those games gives the text make those games stand out from the other games that also use text sounds. Also I died laughing at the Withered Foxy jumpscare XD. Where did you get the gif for that?
@CoolCarGuy
@CoolCarGuy Жыл бұрын
oh defiantly. Those speech/dialogue blips creates that retro sound effect is such an underrated aspect of those old games that newer games, even the most well rounded and complex ones, fail to capture. Ace Attorney is one of the earliest example I could recall but yeah I couldn't find out where else. Also the foxy jumpscare I just chromakeyed a Foxy greenscreen I found on youtube

I was one of those that found out about Ace Attorney through it being referenced and I initially had no clue what it was until I found the Random Encounters musical based on the games.

My favorite part of the origins of Ace Attorney is always how Capcom told Takumi "Make whatever the fuck you want" basically "We'll back it all the way" probably will never see something like that happen in this day of game development

i noticed a severe lack in professor layton vs phoenix wright, i am unsure why that is but i want to make one thing clear, plvspw introduced the multiple witnesses on the stand at the same time thing, not tgaac just wanted to let ya know if ya didnt already

i never played the PWvsPL but I did know that they initially introduced it. I know Takumi wanted to introduce the multiple witnesses and jurist system for a while so prob why he added it into PWvsPL before polishing it for TGAA. But thanks for the insight!

Music person here - I don't like the claim that you don't have to know anything about music. Because we ALL know about the music we listen to. We subconsciously know what sounds mean what in our America-ish culture, don't dispatch that context to what you love because that minimizes how cool and far-reaching and personalized music can be! Also, music is not the universal language, sound is. There are many hums alive today in the non-western world that will NOT hear boss attorney music when those themes play. It's instead something our culture specifically understands, which I would argue is more powerful :) Great video, this is just a niche topic I really got invested in doing my music education degree recently. Have a great day yall!

I think an extra reason for why the sales seem to be lacking compared to others is simply the genre: visual novel, especially since it’s quite linear. No matter how many times you replay, the story and the answers to riddles remain the same. Sometimes you watch someone else play a game and think “i want to play it too”, but when the gameplay appeal is answering riddles, and you already watched someone else play through the riddle… I recently watched someone play a different unrelated detective game. Would i have loved to play and solve it myself? In hindsight, yes. Am i going to buy it now? No, because i already know all the mysteries the game offers. Same goes for Ace Attorney. If you already know Jill Teak is the killer because of her fingerprint in the dessert pudding, the gameplay wont be fun, because the gameplay of figuring out who it is has been done

One thing I'm noticing is that you don't have any footage from several of the games. Like the pachinko machines! And the time Phoenix was a character in Capcom vs whatever. And that Layton crossover too I suppose.

The pachinko machines are so few and far between in both footage and games with it, Capcom vs is entirely different, and I haven't played the Layton crossover yet cuz I need to play Layton 😭

I am probably one of the few that actually likes Spirit of Justice, but when compared to Investigations 2, the latter being my favorite AA game of all time, yes in my own oersonal opinion, I place it above Trials and Tribulations, Yamazaki showed rhat he can make a great Ace Attorney game, as for Spirit of Justice, i like it, soecially for what they did to develop Apollo as a character, it shows major impovements over Dual Destinies, but it vould bot realized its full potential, Spirit of Justice is good, but it couldve been great
