If you don’t have a shopvac. You can also use liquilock water absorber. As a plumber I use it all the time. It’s also very handy if you just need to remove the toilet and reinstall it later. But amazing for carrying the toilet threw the house.

Nice. Further shopvac tip. If you've about worn one out and going to replace, don't throw old squealey away. When trying to unclog a stool, and you've already done the plunger and the augur, and the next step is pull the stool, wait! Get that old shopvac out and shove the hose down in the stool. The larger hose fits perfectly, and if you're lucky (?) it'll suck out the clog. Course now you've got to bleach out the old vac, but hey, didn't have to pull the stool.

I prefer a bucket and a tile sponge to remove the water from the tank and bowl after the water is turned off and the toilet is flushed. The bucket also serves to carry tools and a dropcloth.

In apartment maintenance -Majority of the time when I pull a toilet I’m throwing it out, so I use Liquilock by Oatey. Cost a couple bucks, comes in a lil pkg that you pour into bowl, turning water to gel by the time you’ve got the supply line and bolts disconnected. I use a contractor bag to ensure melted candy corn, and other various treats don’t touch my clothing. Call me uppity and ocd, but ya know more than a few fecalities (fecal+fatality) have occurred on the throne before it broke.

Good stuff. For those renovating an old pier and beam house. Be care many of the toilet flanges are leaded in. If you break that lead you will need a plumber. A local hardware store sells a flange repair kit. Looks like a flange with a hinge on side and a clamp on the other. Just snap it over the old flange and you are in business.

Shop vac is nice, but I've got the one and don't like to have to prep it for wet use. The way I do it is to ram a toilet brush down into the hole repeatedly -- bowl clears in a few seconds minus a tiny bit that won't spill (this is what I do to clean toilets anyway, so the cleaner can actually get below the water line). Then I just use a sponge and bucket for the remainder in the tank. Easy peasy.

I just add a packet of gelling agent which solidifies the remaining water (after you empty the cistern of course). Then you can just carry it out no problems at all.

Isolate cistern, flush, then use plunger to get rid of most of water then either sponge into an old tile adhesive bucket or tip into Bath..... Easy peasy

I like to put a bit of silicone on the bottom edge of the toilet because otherwise it’s my prone to shifting around, which could potentially cause a leak on the wax ring.

also prevents critters squatting and if the seal loosens, arrests the odor.

Good point but then if there is a leak from the wax seal you'll never know it until the water pooled under the fixture rots your subfloor. Just a thought. You're doing great work.
@shawnr771
@shawnr771 2 жыл бұрын
Most of my customers want it sealed for looks. If you are worried about the wax seal leaking into the subfloor. 1. Waterproof the subfloor before installation. 2. Leave a small gap in the sealant at the back of the toilet. Water will run out and be seen.

Hey man, There is a better way to please both of your viewers . Those who are in a fat hurry to fix and those who actually enjoy the entire video, anecdotes, tricks and tips, etc. I am one of those guys who is in a fat hurry to fix and has no time for the other stuff. This is the idea, How about if you add a timeline in your videos for those kind of unfun people to go straight into the fixing part. I am sure you could come out with something better than that. I have subscribed and the bell has been clicked. You could let people know about the timeline in the beginning of your video, so you don't lose them. great video. hope for the best.

@@matt11994 I was talking about other videos. Some people don't have time to see the entire video because they are pressed with time. You don't want to lose those viewers. it would be nice to let people know from the start, Hey! if you are in a hurry and you just want to see the fixing part skip to this timeline and don't forget to subscribe and like on your way out. See a lot of fixing videos start with the guy talking about his channel a few anecdotes, and finally he talks about what parts and tools ...... Just get to it please. The reason I like this Channel is because it has a little bit of that, but this guy is funny, so the talking doesn't really bother me. However, I understand that a lot of people out there are not here for the fixing, but they are here to hear tips and tricks and to have fun. Right now I am overwhelmed with work and my back hurts. I just moved to my new home and I am finding problems here and there. I like this channel. Great work.

I'm still laughing at the "getting your nuts off." But seriously, if the bolts and or nuts are corroded, what do you do? Some the bolts can be replaced and others grouted in with the collar piece. I could be mistaken, it's been awhile.
@whyme5024
@whyme5024 2 жыл бұрын
It was like that with my toilet collar, not a key hole for the bolt head to go through but a round one . I cut off rusted bolts. Bought brass bolt/nut replacements along with a pair of cap nuts. chopped of the bolt head, slid cap nut from under the collar to serve as bolt head. worked fine. under collar space was not enough to insert the bolt from below.
@shawnr771
@shawnr771 2 жыл бұрын
If the nuts wont turn or the bolt turns with it in the flange. If you are getting a new toilet, angle grinder cut them off. Keeping old toilet, depends on skill level grinder or hacksaw.
